Thanks for the votes everyone.  I hope to get a new bike this year if there's any money left after paying taxes due, replacing the broken stove, paying for our last family vacation together before my son goes off to college, and paying his tuition.  It looks like there may be some scholarships on the horizon so that will help.  I'm hoping by June so I may have to do an early tri on the old MTB but should finish the season on a decent bike.

I agree, the mountain bike is hardcore!!
FYI, I found slicks for a bike like that for 13.00 on e-bay last year. They have lasted pretty well.

I actually haven't been on my bike enough recently. The next few weeks I am going to try to get to the 80 mile a week range.

Mountain biking is my true love (sport wise). I used to live in pretty close to the ideal place for it. Every Saturday morning I would head for the hills and ride through the mountains for hours before my family would even get out of bed. I could go for a ride on my way home from work. Even if I only had an hour, I was still close enough to the trails for a short ride. Now it takes me an hour to get to the closest trail. I hadn't done any real trail riding for years.  My top speed on a road bike is way less then my top speed on this bike. It has some pretty hard miles on it. It needs replacing but it will be hard to see it go. We've had some good times together. Taken a few tumbles but we still keep going.
I enjoy tri-ing but its a different kind of enjoyment. Its not the pure adrenaline rush and excitement of the trees racing by and wind blowing in my face. Its the enjoyment of challenging myself and pushing myself a little bit harder, going a little bit more. Still a good enjoyable thing, just different.

Alright, I finally had a chance to take a quick picture of my bike. It had a plain white frame because the guy was going to try to do something custom with it so it has die cut vinyl decals on it which are not the most durable but can be completely changed out at little cost or effort.

This weekend Steve and I did our first tri of the season- 400m/12mile/ 2.2 run- a little shorter than others-
Superbowl Y Tri was a lot of fun. Didn't think I'd do well since I went to the John Mayer concert in TPA on Friday nite and was exhausted by Sunday morning.  Turns out I did pretty well by my beginner standards.  12th/39 women and 48/98 overall.  I don't really put too much emphasis on time or place, but mostly on whether or not I run the entire run, and perform to the best of my abilities at the time in the other disciplines.
Can't wait for things to warm up!
Hope everyone is having a nice beginning of the week Smile

Oops, I forgot an impt part-  Clip in cycle shoes-
First race using them and they are a big difference from sneakers! I had a successful mount and dismount which my 6 yr old made me practice several times in front of him so he could be confident I wouldn't kill myself-
There was a lot of wind and I think the shoes did help me move faster than i might have with only sneakers.

Sharon and Steve,
Way to go on your first race of the season!!
Steve, looks like you had a decent race, aside from the clothing malfunction. Nice pace on the run!
I am dying for my first race of the year!!!

Hey All,
How is the week treating everyone? So far, I have managed to recover from my Super Bowl celebrations (I went to Tulane, and the Saints are dear to my heart) and even keep up, mostly, with my training.
I have the A1A half-marathon in two weeks, my first tri of the season in 6 weeks, and then, I am doing the MS150 ride here in Florida. I will post more about it later, as this will be my third year.
If you are interested, you can donate here.
The really cool thing about this year...My wife will be doing it with me for the first time. The second most cool thing...I get a Trek Madone 5 series to demo on the first day and my wife gets it on the second day.  AWESEOME!!

So, I hope you are all well and training goes well too.

Good job!  That is so cute that your 6 yr old made you practice with the clip ins.  I really like clip in pedals and am glad I switched to them the beginning of last season.  I was told when I got them, "the simple fact is that you will fall over with your feet clipped in at some point, but you won't be going 15 mph when you do it, you'll be going <1 mph" and to just accept it.  It was actually not until the very end of the season that I finally fell over....and it was into mud on a metric century ride. My bike and I got muddy (and I got a bruise) but it was no big deal.

I strongly recommend any hold outs to take the plunge.  The structure of running shoes themselves makes cycling in them awkward.

I have a long time to wait for my first tri of the season but do have my first half-mary coming up the end of March.

Sorry that you fell- but It is so true that you'll fall over for sure at some point.  My 6r old Luke, made me practice cause I fell over a couple of months ago at a stop light and got two bloody knees.  I've practice a lot, but i'm sure it could happen again until it becomes second nature.  Still worth it in the long run.

Good Luck with the upcoming1/2 marathon- that sounds very daunting to me-
I just ran one of our scenic bridges with a friend while a sheet of wind was in my face. I only made it 3.7 miles and very slow at that.
But any exercise/training you can do makes for a GREAT day!

Headwind=free resistance training.

I punched 8 miles into the wind today on my bike- that was enough.

Steve,
I am with you. I did 12 on Sunday. For the first 8 I was wondering what was going on. I was pushing hard, and not going anywhere.
It was only after I turned away from the wind that I realized how strong the headwind was. Yikes.

Hey Everyone,
Pretty quiet this week. Anyone have plans for the weekend?
I am hoping to get in a couple of miles in the pool this afternoon and then a ride tomorrow and a run on Sunday. Keeping my fingers crossed that it actually happens that way.

A1A half Marathon next Sunday, so I am gearing up mentally to try to get a PR.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!!

Nice guys, having a plan helps I think.
I am STARVING today. My volume has been steady, although I did some intensity this week. Maybe finally over my superbowl hangover?

Got in 8 of 9 workouts this week.  Missed a swim but not to worried swimming is going much better this time around.  Feel fairly good about workouts except weather prevented me from getting out on the road for my bike workouts.  So I used the trainer.  I live near hills so the trainer is actually nice for constant pedaling.  I find myself often taking breaks on the downhills when outside   All in all it was a good week hope everyone else was successful!!!
