Melyssa--like Beth said, we love the devil's advocates ... now I just need to stop dating them. LOL

That's why we adore having a Manatee group--lots of different experiences and perspectives, which increases all the wonderful help available.

Especially with WEIGHT LOSS ... I remember reading a massive analysis (basically a giant literature review) of a huge number of the best and most rigorous studies of weight loss in humans ... and one of the surprising conclusions was that a considerably variety (and combination) of methods worked even for long-term weight loss. (Even methods I find highly suspect. Heh. But whatever works for YOU is what's important!)

LYNN!!!

{{{MELON PRESS}}}

It is beyond delightful to see you again. Of course you stop by from time to time, but ... HERE YOU ARE!

It's funny and nostalgic for me that you are doing all the races I did ... of course that makes some sense, but still. I re-live vicariously!!! I was telling Beth in a PM (of COURSE we talk about you behind your back, ha) that in two full seasons of training you've come SOOOOOOO far ... it's just been incredible to watch. I am in awe!

Hi everybody!

What is the trick to keeping your skin from drying out in the winter due to the dry air and clorine from the swimming pool? I heard showering before getting in the pool helps (which I already do). I tried Dove soap but it doesn't seem to help much. Ideas?

Happy New Year! Thanks for letting me hang out with the ladies.

Hey Art!! Nice to "see" you again. I hope you're all healed up from last summer. As far as dry skin, I've heard that hot showers aren't good for dry skin. Lubing up with some nice moisturizer and of course the inward approach, Vitamin E, olive oil and those yummy Omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids, fatty fish, flax seed (and the oil) and avocados. I know the Aveeno and the Eucerin creams seem to work best for me, fwiw.

Aveeno Lotion (big pump bottles at Costco) and Oatmeal soap (from Trader Joe's) work for me.

Hi everyone!

Sorry to be MIA.  I have my nephew visiting and have spent the past few days entertaining a 13 year old!

I have to say that I am happy with how my workouts have been going so far.  I have not missed a day since the 16th of December!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy new year.  Yanti, I keep hearing about possible attacks in Bali.  Please stay safe.

Thanks, Marcy! All is well. Bali is always on high alert for terror attacks during big holiday nights, but especially New Year's. It was all very stressful and exciting as my sister was putting on THE headline New Year's event on this major party island last night, and I was one of the event managers as well and my current boy is head of security.

Despite all the "usual" insanity that attends such an event, it was great fun and all of us managed it so we could each attend part of the concert.

Hope all the MANATEES are safe and happy today, and may we all create and enjoy beautiful blessings throughout this New Year!!!

Happy new year everyone!

I'm ringing in the new year with massive nerdiness. I am actually making a spreadsheet of all the sprints in driving distance next season.

Dammit, I shoulda gone to see the mummers parade. I forgot all about it. It was 40 degrees this year too (last year it was around 9, plus ridiculous wind).

Thanks Lisa and Lynn for the skin care tips. I'm already using the aveeno soap so I try the lotion also.

rang in the new year with a trip to NYC with my son and his friend who was visiting from Omaha (where we used to live)

had to share one of the highlights of the trip

Beth: hehe love it!

I was about to take my family away on holiday but this morning child number 2 erupted in chicken pox... so no holiday (also hard to get much in the way of training done either.,too sick to leave with sitter...)
Last few months in my house: swine flu - me and daughter, followed by pneumonia (son and daughter), baby with multiple ear infections, daughter with abscess on foot then recurrent sinusitis, baby had fall, baby with chicken pox and now this..well you know what they say about doctor's children??!  If I hadn't had a run yesterday, I think I would have gone insane.. enough ranting now, sorry!

just wishing there were a few less obstacles in the way of training.. still I guess it makes me want to train..

Bethie Love--once again, you are my hero. I love the Naked Cowboy!!! And I love you!!!

Melyssa--groan, I am SOOOO sorry! What times you've had. One thing to remember is if you can even snatch 5-10 minutes for yourself here or there, you can take the time to do warm-up type yoga poses (or jumping jacks or running in place if you prefer). Just that brief physical break can be so helpful!

Another possibility is if you have an extra corner of space, to buy a used exercise bike (even the really crappy old kind from the '70s or '80s is fine!) ... it's amazing what 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there can add up to in terms of bike volume.

Hi all manatees!

Happy new year!

I have been on vacation for the last 2 weeks in Costa Rica. Wow what a country! So beautiful.

When we left on 12/18 it was snow caos here, we almost didn't make it down the mountain. It took 6 h to drive to Atlanta, it useually takes 3 h.

I thought that the snow would disapear after us beeing gone for 2 weeks, but no. A lot of snow still left and sooooo cooooold. Brrrrr.

I don't like cold weather, thats why we moved away from Sweden.Wink

I'm starting my training today, I'll be doing Winning by losing, by Jillian Michaels for 12 weeks and a mini tri every Saturday. 1 h of cardio is Saturday training and my plan is to do 30 min biking, 20 min running and 20 min swimming (in that order), I know it 70 min, but just 10 min swimming feels like to little.

Wednesdays and Sundays are my days of and I might do some walking or swimming on those days. I have to learn to master the crawl-stroke and the breathing technique, right now I can only do the breast stroke.

/Mia

Melyssa-- the good health fairy needs to make a visit to your house! Tinkerbeth may be able to spread some pixie dust.

You'll appreciate your training even more when you're able to get back to it.

Hi Mia! Glad you had such a wonderful vacation!

Are you going to be running on Mon/Tue/Thur/Fri (or gym or more rowing or)? I know your focus is running.  I guess what I'm asking is that you're planning not to swim or bike except for Saturday?

For learning the front crawl, I would definitely take some lessons! A local YMCA or pool probably offers them. A private instructor would be great if you can afford it but if you're just starting off, group lessons are fine.

I want to meet the naked cowboy!  Lucky!

Just listed some 2010 races in my blog.  Seems a lot.  Tired just looking at it.

So how's everyone's 1st week of January so far?

Well, I'm doing the Winning by losing program and that is mostley strength training 4 days a week with curcuits, so no running or biking exept as warm-up.
But it is only for 12 weeks and after that I'm thinking I'll start with more tri training.

I think I have enough endurance now to be able to do a Sprint tri, if I can only get the swimming part going.
I can do breast strokes so I'm ok, but I want to learn the front crawl. My husband bought som dvd's and books, and we are going to start with those.

Or I'll try to get us som swimming lessons from the Y we belong to.

I'm exited about this week, this year. Smile

Puh, yesterdays gymsession was tuffer then I thought it was going to be.
I hopped on the bike and did 15 min warm-up and my legs felt like led.

I started of with low weights this week and by week 3 or 4 I hope to be up to my old weights again.

My husband is doing great at his tri-program. Hi is doing the 13 week C2Sprint or something. He has been in the pool both Sunday and yesterday and biking both days too.

I'm soo proud of him for taking on the swimming, since that is his weakest point (or what do you call it?).

I'm proud of both of you for putting in the effort that you are!!!

Maybe decrease the resistance on the bike? It's a good idea, especially for warming up, to do high cadence (revolutions per minute, or basically your leg speed) with low resistance. Keeps the body work aerobic and keeps strain off the knees.
