I often ride a paved over rail route that is over 20 miles each way it's sort of heavily used in spring summer and fall with walkers runners kids dogs deer etc. It's a safe place to ride other then those aforementioned objects.
I'm alot more comfortable having my brakes right there. When I go for longer road rides I'll switch between the Orbea Diva road and the P2.

By the way I'm at a lecture given by Ironman winner Hillary Biscaye now. Gotta go.

aquagirl - 2009-12-21 5:41 PM

losta - 2009-12-21 2:46 PM I'll join in the P2 Love fest. Since TT/Tri bikes have their brakes off from where your hands normally are that is why they are not a good choice for group rides, pace lines etc. It just doesn't work into the group riding dynamic and I understand why. They are great for solo riding or riding with a buddy or two. I have a P2 DA also. I save it for special occasions and tri specific training rides.
1stTimeTri - 2009-12-21 2:37 PM

Cervelo P2 - gotta love 'em!

You CAN ride with a group, if you are careful and know what you are doing, but the group has to be comfortable with that.  Usually riding a TT bike with road cyclists is usually going to get "pooh-poohed" or nixed.  Safety is a concern.

Does she not get VERY angry with you?????
Seriously though.........not sure what you mean by tri specific training rides. Do you mean non group rides?

Hope I'm not derailing the bike talk - just checking in.  Swam again today and felt really good.  Like others, swimming is definately my weakness and I think technique has been the main problem.  Been reading what I can and practicing a few things and would appreciate any input
-length of stroke.  Trying to get across the pool in less strokes.  Consciously reaching on each stroke well out in front of my body and it feels smooth.  I think I've gone from about 30 to less than 25 strokes in a 25 yard pool and feel more efficient.
-Breathing.  Use to only breath on my right side and bilateral breathing feels better.   Its a challenge at first, but I've found if I go slow and practice with my head facing more forward instead of facing down at the lane stripe it helps.
-Rotating my body better on breaths and bringing less of my face out of water when breathing.  I think I use to bring most of my face out of water and I think it created more drag

Since I cant run or bike I thought really focusing on swim technique rather than distance or speed would be effective.  So far it feels good - any suggestions??

Wish me luck - MRI on my leg is tomorrow at 3pm.   Wont have the results for a few days, but I'll update.

I hope everyone has a good week -

Sounds like you are on the right track in the pool!! Bilateral breathing is DEFINITELY the way to go. I made the switch about 2 years ago. Yes it takes some getting used to.....but keep at it. Well worth the effort.  I find that it is so second nature to me to bilateral breathe that i often forget that i CAN take more breaths when doing intervals if I wish!

I am not sure what you mean about your head facing more forward though......its actually better to look straight down. A head forward position will result in your legs being lower in the water....creating  more drag .

As for rotating when you breathe be careful not too over rotate. And you are correct in trying to get just enough of your face out of the water to breath . As you swim you will actually create a little dip in the water around you....so you do not have to get very much of your face out of the water actually.

I think focusing on technique is where the money is for sure. When I started swimming for tris my self taught life long swim form was a MESS. I had joined my first Masters group....and unfortunately did not have a very skilled coach. I spent a year banging out hard intervals without having the fundamental problems with my stroke rectified.

Last year I JUST focused on technique. I found an awesome swim coach who would get in the water WITH me. This was more helpful than anything that I had tried before. She would watch me underwater....tell me what needed correcting. She would even swim beside me and just put my arms where she wanted them in an effort to teach me how it should feel. It was an invaluable experience. Worth every penny.

Now that my swim form is up to par I have joined another masters group....and hope that interval work at this stage, with my swim form being pretty good , will make me faster.

Did I mention before that I was not really aquagirl???? Shhhhh.....don't tell anyone!!

Congrats on the new addition! Canine or feline?

I'm just back from a swim workout too, I was working on my stroke count too. It was 33-36 I'm now at 22-27.

Hi Everyone,

Back from my parents.  Lots of good food and drinks.  I brought along my 30 day Shred workout and was able to do it Sunday and today.  Headed to the pool tomorrow.

Short term goals:  ditto on getting better at the flip turn.  Right now I feel like I'm turning more sideways than just around.  I have an indoor tri in Feburary.  Last year I did 14 1/2 laps in 15 minutes. without flip turns.  I would like to be around 19 laps this year.

Send some of that snow my way.

Most definitely a bad idea...riding a TT bike in a pace line/group situation is "just bad form, ol' chum". It's dangerous and roadies would probably kick you out if you tried.

Hey Phil... how you been ol' man? Hope you're having a great off season. Happy holidays.

Hey, Kevin!  Long time!  Way-off season is more like it.  Just being a Dad again to get back some of that time that I missed whilst training.

Happy Holidays to you, and have fun!!

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would quickly pop in to say hi (I will have more time after the holidays).

Kristen...love those pictures. It's so much fun when they're that age.

Lisa...you must be so excited.  A bike under the Christmas tree.  It does not get much better than that.

Helen...are you getting that stove for Christmas?  I am so jealous!

Hope the snow has stopped for those on the East Coast.  It doesn't look like we will have a white Christmas this year.

Have a good day tomorrow and train safe...

K.

Length of stroke is a great thing to work on, but you can get more length by making the most of your catch, really grab the water,  think of it like lifting a light weight a lot vs lifting a heavier weight for fewer reps if that makes sense.  The visual clue I use is my hand/arm going over a barrel or round object.  A big mistake people make is not finishing the stroke, push the water all the way so your hand is exiting by your thigh not the hip.

Bilateral breathing is a great skill to work on, but I'd make sure you have one side down pat before moving to the other.  It depends on when you learned to swim, the more recent way is to tuck your chin to your chest, but the old timers in the masters group I used to swim had the water line more towards their crown of their head, (which is useful if you are drafting OW off someones feet).
If you are just getting used to it I'd go with the chin tucked to the chest and when you are turning to breathe there should be a little channel that your wake makes for you to breath, you should literally have one goggle in the water with one goggle out when doing this.  Any time you are bring your head out of the water (or any body part) there will be a body part that sinks more to compensate, which is the drag you were referring to.  so if your head is popping up some your legs will be sinking.

Morning all!!!

Its freezing here in bean town and I MUST do a long run. I have been seriously slaking.

I would just like to add my $.02 about bikes.....

I have a Cannondale CAAD 9 Road bike which I love . But I really wanted a TT bike. I went for my fitting and the LBS set up several bikes for me to ride. I took them out for a spin and decided I liked the Kuota K factor. I took that bike to a nearby bike path and rode for over an hour. I was SO comfortable, and I have NEVER regretted my decision. I LOVE my bike. Like Helen, my roadie collects dust now. I do plan on riding my roadie this winter.

I still have a house full of family, and I have to work these days before the holidays. I will try to check in more regularly.

Hey Suzie... manuscript? Are you an editor? Or writer? My wife is a writer... so I think you're either an editor or proofreader... because no WAY you're writing 2-3 manuscripts in a couple weeks. LOL

Oh no.  Nothing as grand as an editor or a writer.  I am working on manuscripts for research I have done.  I just need to get them finished, in to the journals, and pray for acceptance.
