I think I.m finally feeling like I am figuring this whole thing out.  I am following my training log better and it sure motivates me to do something to push myself everyday. I am learning a lot readiong you guy's questions and posts

rundadrun - 2010-01-22 6:41 AM I am impressed! I have heard of the mental and physical challenges the one faces. I am really drawn into this type of running. Never done it but its calling me.So before p90x where were you on your weight? I recieved some copies of the work outs and they are tough. And what helps you the most in your endurance?

About 2 months before I started P90x my weight was right at 200lbs.  I changed up my diet (cut out white bread, fried food, and beer) and lost about 10lbs and then started p90x.  I went from 190lbs to 168lbs after the first 90 days.  Then I alternated between P90x Plus and P90x and my weight stayed the same but I lost a couple more inches.  That is when I started Triathlon and lost another 15 or so lbs  to bring me to my current 150lbs.

The P90X workouts are awesome and really kick your butt - However, I firmly believe that the p90x nutrition portion is 85% of the program.  If you do the workouts without following the nutrition portion your results will only be average.

It has been over a year since my last p90x round and I still follow the nutrition part.  It really is no longer a diet and has just become the way I eat.

This is very true.  I recently completed a round of P90x where I did not follow any kind of dietary guidelines.  I got stronger but I didn't lose any weight.  Now I'm following the 'Zone' diet (similar to P90) and I'm starting to see the beginning of a six pack.

I did it as a part of P90X but felt there are better ways to spend 90 minutes, namely running.  I may not have 'respected' yoga before but I certainly do now.  I put yoga in the same 'if you could only do one exercise' class as running and swimming.

Funny you should bring this up, Chad. I've always had very limited flexibility and I've been considering doing yoga to help.

I have done Yoga on the Wii. Since you get great feed back on balance it has really helped. Also I HATE streching and this is a better way to keep my flexibility.-Do it when I can fit it in with running, swimming and biking

chad, I believe you told me about doing bricks. The bike and run right. Finally we had a day in the low 50's. Hard to believe for January! What should I be feeling? What I did notice was quicker fatique to my legs. I managed a half mile on the run. Wasn't as bad as I thought.

Leg fatigue is a good sign. You'll get better at the brick as time goes on. It really is something you have to practice.  That said, I bailed on my post-ride run today. I "forgot running shoes" again!  :P

Speaking of bricks, my tri is 6 weeks from today. How many bricks should I do between now and then? Once a week? More? Less?

I think one a week is a good idea. You can mix it up, too. Try a long ride/short run one day and a short ride/long run another time.

I did a 21-minute swim yesterday that made me realize two things:

1) Time in a pool slows to a crawl when you're 38 years old
2) I need to work on my technique

I've got a 35-minute session scheduled for tomorrow. If you don't hear from me by Wednesday, call Search & Rescue!

Treat your brick transition as a T2 practice. Pretend you're in a race and bust your butt to get back on the road. You'll get good at the quick change and you won't have as much race-day anxiety. I promise you, this works.

I definitely second this suggestion! I've gotten to the point where I don't have to think about what I'm throwing on, I end up having put on my clothes all in the right order, and all on the right parts of my body. Once this becomes automatic, transitions will be a breeze!

T1 is transition 1. That's when you transition from swim to bike. T2 is transition 2. That's when you transition from bike to run.

I did s/b/r in the same day for the first time (not back to back).  I got 4 hours sleep, worked 8 hours, swam 500m, took my son to b-ball practice and rode 14 miles, and then took him to track practice and ran a 5K.  I took a 5 hour energy (first ever) before the bike...felt a little lift I guess but it's not a magic potion.  I got pretty worn out at the end but I think that's more of a function of being late in the day after poor sleep.

What does everyone think of getting massages? Do you think they help? I've got a recovery/easy week this week and am thinking of getting one. Worth the money or should I save the $$$ towards buying myself a new bike (a girl can dream!!)?

My wife has been having some weird knee pain when she is running.  So today she went to get a massage and they trace the reason for her knee pain to a big old knot in her back.  She claims they worked the knot out and her knee now feels great.  Not sure if I buy it or not but she went for a pain free run tonight!

a good massage can do a lot if you go to someone who understands body alighment. Jeff Sound like your wife may have been running a bit crooked and that will throw the knees off-especially in women as our knees aren't alighned the same as mens are. ANyway they sure feel good.

Swam 1200 yards this morning in 36 minutes. I know that's pretty slow, but that's the farthest distance and longest I've swam (by a lot) since I started training.

I also did a lot of work on my technique after poking around the forums and reading what "good form" is supposed to be. Mostly just worked on rotation, not crossing over on the downstroke, and keeping my lead arm in the water until the trailing arm entered the water. I felt MUCH better and more confident about the swim after today's session.

Just thought I'd share!

Awesome work, Josh! Swimming improvements are hard to come by, and it sounds like you are finding them right now. Keep it up, bud.
