I hope 1/4 million miles is a typo too or I'm feeling very inadequate.

Wow...I did it again Want to keep you on your toes!

Yards...not miles. Still, over 8,000 yards a day is insane.

So has anyone trained while on a cruise? doing one in 2 weeks and I'm hopeing it doesnt kill my workouts.

I have been on four cruises and all have had very nice, fully stocked fitness centers and a track. Swimming is out on the boat though (most pools are really small), but like Megan said plenty during the beach time in port, if you have the time!

So are we keeping the challenge going through February? I like it! It gives me a little extra motivation to get out there and train!

funny all the msgs that get posted in just a few days.  I am in for FEB CHallenge, it REALLY challenges me to train when I don't want to.

If my calculations are correct my program calls for the following during FEB
S:  5Hr 11min  /  B: 15Hr 39min  /  R: 5Hr 11min

BTW: I would really like to hear from the rest of the folkls, the ones not involved in the challenge.  I hope no one has been put off by the competitiveness as triathletes come in all shapes and colors.  The primary objective of the Mentor Program is to share experiences and motivation.

Count me in for the Feb Challenge.  I will strive for 1,000 miles of swimming per week!  LOLLaughing

Goal Time: S: 4:45 / B: 9:30 / R: 9:25

Actual Time: S: 0:45 / B: 0:35 / R: 0:40

I only have a few weeks left until my wife starts her training again (post pregnancy).  So I'll need to be on daddy duty more now when Becky out on the road.

Happy Training!

February is on then! Here is how I stand to date:

February Challenge 2/1-2/28
Goal: Swim 8600 yds / Bike 7:15 /Run 50 mi
Actual: Swim 1050 yds / Bike 1:20 /Run 2mi

Ive already fell behind this week due to work and rain, so I'm starting in the rear! Hate that!

Good luck everyone, and I too would like to hear from everyone. Especially if you are running into training difficulties, I have already taken advantage of other peoples questions being answered just because it was something I didn't think to ask!

Train Hard,
Alan

Although I haven't been able to properly analyze my running form, I think I'm planting my feet (slightly) ahead of my hips causing a heel/midfoot strike.  I've started looking into Chi Running to help correct my form..

What are your thoughts to build better form? drills?

thanks,
Tuffli

Tuffli: I started running late in life (I'm 41 now) and I've viewed all the videos, DVDs. blogs, etc on chi running (aka barefoot running).  It is NOT EASY to switch by yourself.  That said, a friend of mine got what seems to be the best tool for this: VIBRAM's five finger shoes/sandals (http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/) he's very happy with the results and is definitely enjoying running more than before.   Feel free to contact him thru my friends' list (BOOM) - he'll give you all the details.  BTW he's also from the Pacific but lives in FL now.  Now, again, I am trying to switch too yet, he doesn't recommend it for me as I have not suffered on the knees or other joints from my current form - makes sense too, but a lot of the data points at BAREFOOT RUNNING as the right way to do it.

I trust you saw the CHI RUNNING video here on BT - I am a visual guy so, his image of "riding a scooter" makes a lot of sense to me.  Joel Friel-author of the Triathlete Training Bible also offers a few visual cues on how it should feel.  Check out his website.

I hope this has been helpful.       Good luck! and I really mean that.

Depending on what your goals and natural abilities there are alot of experts/coaches that do not recommend amateurs "trying" to switch the way they run.  As anyone that has tried it usually is very difficult and leads to injury unless done absolutely perfect.  I am not a fluid runner but have tried slowly to change my gate and foot position but as I tire in a race I tend to revert back to my old stride.  I would just be very careful forcing your body to something un-natural.

I liken it to golf, not everyone can swing like tiger but you can still be a great golfer with completely different swing.  The key is to find what works for you.  (unless you have top level coaching and are willing to put in hr after hr) #1
goal in any training plan is to avoid injury!!!!!!

Anyone want to come run with me tomorrow we will have 7" of snow by morning!! LOL

Thanks for the tips guys.  I agree with both of your thoughts.  I'm pretty happy with my form so far and luckily I've stayed injury free from it (knock on wood).  Just trying to get a better understanding of fore foot running (ie. chirunning).  I know change won't happen overnight, but it gives me a better idea of more efficient running..

I'm riding 70km tomorrow morning around the island with a friend.  Anyone is welcome to join us! It'll be 85F at 6am.

Hi All!
I've been outta commission for a few weeks, battling a chronic sinus infection and just general mid-winter fatigue. Low motivation right now! I did get in the pool and swam 600 meters and felt pretty good. It doesn't sound like a lot but not bad for a couch potato returning to exercise! Plan is to run for about 15-20 min later today after my hubby wakes up. It's finally sunny here in San Jose and I need to get out for some fresh air! I'm not doing my fit camp anymore, it is just far too early in the morning and I was only getting 5-7 hours of sleep per night. Going to work out after work on my 8 hour shifts and on my days off. Not realistic to work out on my 12 1/2 hour days. Hope you all are doing well!

The snow missed CT this weekend so was able to get outside for a run

Sounds like people have some great goals for February! I'm going to plan for 50,000 yards swimming (missed that by 50 yards last month), 110 miles running and 300 miles biking.

Also, one thing that I try to do after every bike and run workout, but I don't put in my workout blog is stretching. I have found that even taking 5-10 minutes after a workout to stretch and/or foam roll really helps with recovery and seems to be fending off injury.

This is my typical routine:
upper body: cross-arm stretch, grab hands behind back stretch
while standing, bend waist and reach for toes
lunges (right and left)
sit on heels
sitting down- right leg stretched out, left leg bent so foot is touching opposite thigh- grab right foot with right hand, then repeat with left side
touch toes while sitting (feet flexed)
butterfly stretch (feet together, knees out)

with a towel or cord and lying down face up: 1. wrap towel around foot, lift foot with straight leg until you feel a pull. 2. drop leg over opposite side with leg still straight (keep hips flat to ground). 3. bend leg and pull knee up to chest. Then repeat steps 1-3 with other leg.

Then I usually use a foam roller to roll my achilles, quads, hamstrings and ITB

I forgot to chk my standings with all the excitement.  I got a personal PR for a time of 53:28 (8:32 pace).
this is the first time I've run this pace for this long... was it the race factor?  I assume it is.   Best thing is
that it proves me I should be able to run my half iron in October at around 9:00 pace; we'll see.  My
first half mary is coming up in 3 weeks and my goal pace is 9:00.

BTW: I had set my Garmin to pace me at 9:00 miles but i disregarded it after reaching the halfway mark.

I can't be happier with my results (PR!!!)

Awesome job! That is great!

9:00 per mile pace for half iron would be excellent...however will require excellent pacing and nutrition in order to get there. Make sure to do at least one 2-3 mile runs at 9 min pace after your rides every other week to get used to running immediately after biking.

Been doing bricks at least every other week.  I have to go back and chk my pace then, but I'm certain its been near that.  Still, thx for everyone's support.  I will make sure I pace all of my HIM training specific runs near that.

Haven't had a chance to post much but just wanted to drop a note...

I've started a Masters swim class and it's tough... About 2500 yards twice a week, sometimes a bit more. I also joined the tri club at the university (they accept alumni) so wed have become a huge workout day. Usually a swim in the morning, spin class in afternoon, then a 2-3 mile run then the masters class. I'm usually pretty tired by the time I get home.

This week I went down to florida to watch the shuttle so took along the bike and have been doing some longer group rides down here. Group riding is pretty different. And pretty fast.

St Anthony's is coming up pretty quickly. I need to do some more running... Before then I have one sprint tri and a bike TT. I'll let you know how it goes...

thanks

Just alittle advice if your goal is 9mm for a HIM then your training should be around 8:15 or 8:30. If you were doing a full IM you would need to train atleast a 8mm or faster.  On tired legs your pace is very hard to keep.  My best HIM is right at 2hr,  where I can run a low 1:40 high 1:30 1/2mary.  My goal this year at IM is a 4hr so all my training has to be below 8mm.

You will do just fine if you train properly.

Wow, I guess I still have some ways to go - I also have 9 months before my HIM.  Thx for the pointers, very much appreciated.  I will be running a half mary in 3 weeks, let's see how I hold up on that one (my crystal ball is telling me 9:15 pace), so, I guess I just need to keep doing what I have been doing.

Jason: that's awesome!  Welsome to the life of triathletes, we train and train and train... somedays hard, somedays easy, some days long, others short.  The goal is to get tired but not to feel SPENT too often.  Watch that, and you will do fine.

BTW: Welcome to FL. Hoping you didn't get much of the rain, but if you did, it's better thn snow.

Try using a pace calculator to figure out some good goals. I've used http://www.triathloncalculator.com/and it seems like a good predictor.

I'm so excited get to fly out tomorrow to Ft. laurderdale for cruise.  Its funny to read they have windchill advisories at 30/40deg.  2 nights ago while plowing snow we had a windchill of -15 with 10" of snow!! Ill trade that any-day.

I just hope I can keep my training going on the ship as alcohol seems to mess my schedule up. lol
