robingray_260 - 2010-04-08 8:30 AM I can't help with the HR matter as I don't own one yet.

That brings me to another question, though.  I am looking to buy a HR monitor and don't want to spend more than around $150. I don't need a GPS with it.  So, what does everyone else use? Do you like it? What would you buy next time?  My dh thinks I need a polar brand, but I have seen a lot of favoritism on this site for the Garmin 305.

I have a polar HRM that I bought for $80 that has been great for training.  I like the fact that it also works with the treadmills at the gym and displays the HR right on the info panel.  I recently bought a Garmin 405CX from a BT member and I've been really happy with it as well.  The added benefit of the Garmin is that I can set-up more specific training zones.  The polar only has 3 zones.

Ok...we'll start simple. If you had to make a quick meal...30-40 minutes using everyday items you might have in your fridge...what would be your "go to" meal.

I don't cook very much...I'm not that good at it...but luckily for me, I'm not a picky eater at all.
my quick go to meal is normally something with rice and whatever is around. tops takes 20 mins to make, start the rice, while thats cooking chop up veggies and protien of choice. My normal combinations (just based on what i normally have around), are some mix of garlic, onions, carrots, peppers, zuchini, and then either chicken/beef/shrimp. if the chicken/beef/pork is cut up smaller it can all go in the pan together, if not throw it in a few min before the veggies. sautee this all all up on med to med high heat in a lightly oiled pan, and bam, food to go 9actually something like this tends to end up being my dinner a lot too).

Ahhh...ditto.

I could eat stir fry with rice everyday if I had to.  I love cooked vegetables...zuchini, bell peppers, onions, broccoli, carrots, celery, tomato, garlic...mmmm...I'm getting hungry.  The good thing about that kind of meal is it's super fast and I don't need to put a lot of fatty meat into it.  One chicken breast is enough to make about 3 servings for me.

personally, i have had, along with a few of my athletes, a LOT of issues wit hthe 305, and polar from what i have seen/tested, makes some awesome products. that said, before you get one, take a look at what you want out of it, its simply going to put some numbers to your training, you need to be able to take those numbers (or have a coach do it), and use them

True...since I got mine...I haven't used it to it's full potential.  It's basically something I just use to plug data into my workouts rather than really training in zones.  It gives me an idea though...that if I know I want to take an easy day...that I shouldn't let my HR get too high...and vice versa...if I'm supposed to go hard and see my HR cruising too low...I know I need to push a little more.

Do you know what the average amount of protein one should be getting in a day? I have no idea but for some reason my husband is always nagging saying that I am not getting enough protien, also, suggestions for protein rich foods...

I know some disagree, but for simplicity, decent taste, convenience and cheapness, I like whey protein powder in milk.  A 5 pound bag from Sams Club goes a long way.  A lot of people prefer natural protein and I definitely won't disagree that it’s better to have a balanced diet than rely on supplements, but for a quick morning snack or post workout protein source, I like it a lot.  Plus, the bag says that if I eat it a lot I'll become a wicked sweet athlete.

Speaking of which...I just ran out of my huge container of mixed nuts.  I buy mine from Costco...but there was nothing on the packaging that said if I eat lots of it, I will turn into a super athlete.

Hey what are everybodys thoughts on doing your own tune up? I am very good when it comes to working on my bike and am thinking about completely pulling my bike apart before saturday and give everything a good cleaning and everything. The one thing I have never done is worked with the bottom bracket and cassette. What are your thoughts on doing this whole thing. It beats paying 200 bucks and I think would be a good learning experience.

I have been interested in doing the same.  While I'm not about to take apart the BB...I know the local tri shop has some classes on doing your own tune ups...cleaning out the hubs etc.  There's a cost...like $50-75...but I suppose once you learn how to do it yourself...it pays for itself over the long run many times over.

You probably want to learn how to do things right too...doesn't make sense to do it yourself and do it wrong...thus having to take it into the shop anyway.

I often take brand new things apart just to better understand how they work.  when I bought my tri bike recently, I spent the entire day just fiddling with things.  I am all for it.

parktoolusa.com has FREE awesome tutorials that show you how to do virtually anything on your bike.

parktool.com

i would not rip it apart until you are more comfortable, but start figuring out how to adjust things, and go ahead and clean/lube everything that needs it.

With the right tools (chain whip and cassette lockring tool) the cassette is no problem.  The bottom bracket scares me though.

My roommate and I are each trying to build a bike up from a bare frame as cheap as possible.  Its been a good way to learn maintenance without ruining my real bikes, plus its fun.

Gah!  I know!  The reason I didn't take pics when I first brought it home was because I left my camera at school.  If I ride tomorrow I'll take some pics before.  When I'm here at school I have to keep my bike strapped up in my closet when I'm not riding it.

the BB is actually simple to take off if you have the tool for whichever one you have. just unscrew it.

the cassette there is really no reason to take off unless you are replacing or switching wheels.

bent my small chainring on sunday.

was shifting from middle to small ring and it got jammed in between the two.  Took a bit to get it unjammed.  finally got back on it, and the big and middle ring rode fine, but the small ring skipped the chain a bit.

finally put my bike on the trainer today to try to figure out what was making the chain skip a bit on the small ring.  Its bent.  Gonna take it to my LBS on saturday....

is this something that can be easily replaced?

yeah and it should be relatively cheap too.

i replaced both rings on my bike near the end of last season (worn teeth) and i think they were around 25 each used inluding shipping, new will be a bit more but its not wildly expensive.

My achilies(about 3-4 inches above my ankle) has been sore lately.  It has been getting sore after my runs lately.  It first got sore about 2 weeks ago when I went on a run and really tried to focus on a midfoot/forefoot strike.  That probably wasn't the best idea for an hour run.  I didn't think anything of it until now.  Since I'm tapering, I have done some more intense sessions lately which seems to cause a little soreness.  I think the fact that I'm consciously trying to not heel strike has played a part too.  It never worried me because it was only a little sore and I assumed it would just go away over time.  I just rubbed then iced it for 15mins and it feels a lot better.  I think I am going to really focus on warming up properly for my runs and then maybe stretching for a few minutes after.  I know that I haven't been running any sort of high volume but I can't afford to risk any injury with all the training I want to do this summer.

i've been dealing with a bit of this for about a month now.
proper warm up, NOT forefoot striking, and icing have kept it at bay/only notice in the mornings right now. keep an eye on it and don't do anything stupid.
