My eating habits are strange.  I basicaly eat exactly the same thing for breakfast, snack, lunch and after lunch snack every day.  This is because I have to eat on the go at work.  Don't have breaks so I bring a cooler full of food.  I pack 1300 calories in my cooler.  My dinners I eat with my wife.  They are usually pretty healthy.  My problem is that by the time I get dinner, it is 7-8pm.  I go to bed at 9-9:30.  My job requires me to get up at 5:30am.  I will never have 3 hours before I go to bed.  I can't work around it.

Allright team!!!

I took a much needed rest day last night. It's been a while! I took the time to do some maintainence on our road bikes. I got the chains all cleaned and adjusted and did some fine tuning on the deraileurs. I also put a new computer and saddle on my wifes Kuota. I need to get all that stuff set before my mtb comes from the powdercoater and I put that back together for the mtb race season. Unless I get a new one.(Please honey!!!! lol ) I almost feel like I need another rest day today, but I think a light, run and maybe swim will loosen me up tonight. We'll see what I can fit in.

What's up for the weekend everyone?

The wife and I are going to a computrainer class Saturday. Sunday, I'm going to have to get up early and get an 11 mile run in before the game of the centry, Bears vs Packers! . I'm making Jambalaya for the game. I love this jambalaya recipe, and it's healthy!! I use organic chicken and brown rice. I gotta get that run in though per my marathon plan. Somewhere I need to squeeze in another swim too, between Fri/Sat/or Sun

Give us that recipe, Brian!!! I was snowed in last night and have a very sick 6-year-old throwing up today and my 3-year-old has a soccer game tonight. Probably two "rest" days in a row for me. I'll get a run and spinning in this weekend (hopefully a swim too)!

ps- i highly recommend kale "chips" for the games this weekend. break off the kale and throw aways the stems, drizzle with a little olive oil with sea salt and garlic. bake on 350 for about 8-10 minutes and then...yum! so good!! my oldest son and i can't get enough of them.

hahahahaha. It's a modified version of the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook recipe from an earlier edition. I'll have to look at it when I get home and post it for you.

Thanks for letting me in!!

A little about me:

NAME:  Karen

STORY:  I am 43 years old and I am an attorney who works for Legal Services.  When I turned 40 I decided I wanted a new challenge and for some reason I decided that would be triathlon!  I had been running for a little while before that, so it seemed like a natural extension.  This will be my 4th year of triathlon.

FAMILY STATUS:  Married to the best husband ever, no kids, 1 cat, 1 dog!

CURRENT TRAINING:  I have a HM plan downloaded from here, but it is based on time and I think that I need one based on distance, because I am slow.  Haven't found a replacement yet though, anyone have a recommendation??  I am getting my trainer set back up this weekend (had to move it at the holidays because of the excess stuff involved there).  Also, I have been a huge slacker on swimming over the winter.  My goal is to start back swimming in February.  I usually get my swims in in the mornings before work.

2011 RACES:
5/15 - Pittsburgh Half Marathon - this is my first HM and I am really kinda nervous about it!
6/11 - Jackie Kallal Sprint Tri - This was my first tri in 2008.  I have done it each year, and have improved my time each year.  Last year I was First Place Athena!!
07/17 - Keystone Park Sprint Tri - This is a challenging course, and I missed my goal by 6 seconds last year!  I love this race because the bike is hard so I felt great when I finished and because it is about 10 minutes from my house!
September - I am toying with the idea of a HIM - either Rev3 Cedar Point or Ironman 70.3 Augusta.  But, I just don't know.  It seems just crazy!!!

WEIGHTLOSS: I've gone from 290 lbs to around 155 lbs.  I am up from that a bit right now, but hope to be around there by race season.   I think I will always be an Athena - and I am fine with that!

I wanted to join a mentor group because I like the accountability!  I like having people to encourage me and to tell me when I have done good.  Laughing  I hope that I can do that for you all too!  Also, it is nice to have a small group where I can ask questions, and not feel intimidated!  I started to log my workouts again - I am usually really good about that and find it helpful to be able to go back and see how I have improved!

Okay, enough rambling from me for now.

Incredible job on the weight loss Karen!!!!

I've been having really good success on the hal higdon full marathon plan. He's got one for the 1/2 too, and based on distance. Several levels to choose from.

Incredible job on the weight loss Karen!!!!

Thank you very much.  It was a lot of hard work, but I have never been in better shape in my life!!

And thanks for the suggestion of Hal Higdon.  I had seen those, but didn't know anyone who actually tried them.  It is a 12 week plan, so I will continue with what I have for now, and try that starting on Feb. 21!

This weekend I hope to get in a bike ride on the trainer.  Hopefully I will get it set back up early enough on Saturday that I can ride on Saturday.  My husband will not be home most of the day on Saturday so that would be a good time to ride.  I am not sure about running.  We got a good bit of snow last night and the roads are a mess.  I hate running when it is slippery out because I am a klutz and it makes me nervous!  Maybe the roads will be better by Sunday, but I don't think any snow will melt because the high for the next 3 days is 17°, so maybe a run on Sunday.

I don't blame you on the snow. I haven't run outside since Thanksgiving. It's 1 degree here right now!!! I've been doing all of my marathon plan on the treadmill so far. I'll have to do 11 miles on the treadmill Sunday!!! I can't stand it because I just had a problem with my ear and can't use earbuds to listen to music or anything. Plus the darn treadmills turn off after an hour and you have to reset. I want to be ready though, so I 'll get it done.

Hi Karen! I chose this group out of all the open ones specifically because there was weight loss aspect. Since that's something that is still a daily consideration in my fitness, I felt good about being in a group with others who have struggled and have/are working to overcome that particular challenge. I'm currently eating at a slight deficit, but I don't want to comprimise my performance so I'm not worried about dropping more weight until after my race. I figure that at least my holiday weight will drop off now that I'm back to daily exercise and tracking my calories though.

Welcome!

You got that right Henry!

This weight loss thing is a constant battle. I'm glad I found so much enjoyment in endurance sports that it keeps me motivated to fight that battle. It's so easy to slip back down that slope. I'm about 5 lbs off my lowest point right now. I think some of it is muscle, but I still don't like it. I think I can gain 10 lbs in a week pretty easy. 10lbs takes me at least 5 weeks to get rid of.

So Sheree!!!! Put down those cheese-its!!!! Lol

Subject: Training plan question
Hey Brian, I have a question re: training plans as well. I've been looking at several beginner plans, including the basic beginner plan in the Joe Friel book. I really like Friel's approach to training, and it's a 12 week plan, which is what I've been intending to follow. However, the beginner plan aside from the running portion (I'm going easy on the running because of my back) is much less time/distance than I've already been putting in on my daily workouts. I didn't think I was particularly prepaired for a combination training program, but for example, my swim workouts have been hitting 1000-1150 meters as of this week, and last around 40 minutes so far. The first week of the Friel plan only calls for swimming 10 minutes. The first cycle is slotted for 20 minutes at an easy level. While I've only been riding a single speed and have some aspects of a new bike to adapt to, I can bike 20 miles, no problem. The running starts with run/walk, which I'm ok with even though it will be easy. Can you point me in a direction for a more appropriate training plan? Perhaps a mid-beginner level? LOL
Thanks!

Henry

I'm actually really glad you brought up Freil. He's one of the standards for training for sure. The problem with generalized plans is that they don't know you. So they are designed to start out somewhere in general. There's a couple of ways to approach this IMO. But bare in mind I'm not a coach so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

1. Find an intermediate or another plan that starts in a more appropriate level
2. You could give yourself a little break and just do the plan as described.
3. You could continue with what you are doing currently andofficially start the plan in a later, more appropriate spot in the plan.
4. You can take the plan as a general suggestion and modify it to your needs with higher volumes

Remember to that if you are training for a sprint and can already do the distance you can certainly do no harm using an Olympic plan as long as you can handle it. Especially if you think you may want to do an Olympic later. You could also find more advance plans geared more towards speed at your race distance than just making a distance. Try looking at some of the other plans available to you and see if those fit you better. Otherwise take one of those plans and modify it. Let me know if you want any suggestions or would like me to look over something you modified.

Great Brian, thanks! I'll look over some other plans this weekend. Maybe the plan I'd been looking at before I started reading the Friel book is a better fit but I can't remember right now. Off for an easy swim this morning.

Brian,

What is your opinion of this plan? http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon-training/Sprint-Triathlon-Training... />It's geared for a slightly longer race than I'm doing and the starting swim distance is about where my current ability is. I could probably modify the bike workouts a little - I read some reviews and agree that some of the longer ones are maybe too long. I think I would also taper a bit more the last week compared to this plan.

High of 13F here today in Deep Creek.  Looks like another dreadmill run.  I would go out and run if the roads were not so icy.  Just do not feel like taking a chance on a preventable injury.

I owe you guys a recipe.

Meulen's Chicken Jambalaya
3/4 cup sliced mushrooms
1/3 cup chopped celery
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped sweet green pepper
2 tbsp butter
1 14.5oz can diced tomatoes
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
2/3 cup long grain brown rice
1 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp your fav hot sauce
1 bay leaf
2 cups cubes chicken

I get organic chicken and marinate it in hot sauce. Beware this makes it hard to breathe while cooking. Spice chicken with garlic salt and a little crushed red pepper and cook in frying pan. This gives it a good bite but no lingering burning. If you just want hot burning, cook chicken first and then cube it and mix in hot sauce.

In a large pan cook celery, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, butter till soft. I add a little Olive oil in there too. Once soft mix in tomatos, broth, rice, basil, garlic powder, pepper, hot sauce and bay leaf. Cook 20 minutes or until rice is soft. Then mix in chicken and heat thoroughly.

makes 4-6 servings
