53epilot - 2011-01-06 7:19 AM Got my first swim workout in for the season, starting to get back in the grove of training and actually feeling like a triathlete again.

Hope everyone gets some training in.

Good for you!

I miss swim workouts, but none for me until the lake melts.  We don't have a pool  around here.  Frown

I have a pool only 1/2 mile from my house, but it is only two lanes.  I have to get there early before the "pool walkers" take over.

You don't have to wait until the ice melts, you could cut a lane out of the ice and take a swim that way.  Don't they do that kind of thing where you are at, polar bear club or something like that?

I swim so slow my "lane" would probably freeze over again before I finish my workout. Embarassed

They have a polar bear plunge on New Year's Day, but I've never done it, not because I wouldn't do it, but because New Years isn't a yoga holiday.  I missed the plunge the two years since we moved here because I was teaching.  I suppose I could just go jump in one day, but without the party afterward it doesn't seem worth it.  LOL

jcrrankin - 2011-01-06 10:47 AM Had first swim lesson last night, really starting with the basics and fundamentals. It went ok, I think. Need to find practice time. Hope everyone is doing well.

Jeff

Basics and fundamentals are good.  They are the things you'll need to remember when you're halfway to the first buoy and your race plan goes out of your head.  Trust me on this.  Embarassed

Yay for getting in the water for the first lesson!

What are "1500m M/S workouts"?
Vicki

Vicki,

Not sure if this is standard swim abbreviation or not, but I have seen some of the following to describe workouts:

W/U (or WU)- Warmup
M/S (or MS)- Main Set
C/D (or CD)- Cooldown
R/I (or RI)- Rest Interval

You will see some workouts listed as "M/S 8 x 100 on :50 w/10 R/I".  That would be a main set of 8 x 100 meters at a pace of 50 seconds per 100m and a 10 sec rest interval.  It is just a quick way to abbreviate.

Hope that helps.

Finished my run workouts for the week.  I am happy that I am taking it slow and not looking at the girl next to my treadmill doing intervals at 6:10 pace and try to keep up with her.

5 days of workouts this week, very happy to see that.  Weights and the dreaded trainer tomorrow, should be fun.

Hope you all have a great end to the workout week and awesome weekend.

Go Colts!

teristoy - 2011-01-06 8:10 PM WOW!!  I did laps today at the Y--I have a lot of work to do.  I am a "usta" person.  "Usta" swim fast laps, "usta" run fast and "usta" bike all day.  Looking to change all that in the next few months!

What's best?  I have the 22-week training plan and on most days you do 2 of the disciplines.  I don't think I have time to go to the gym 2X a day.  What do you guys do? What is the best ?

Teri

p.s. I love Colorado--sunny and 55 degrees today, and 55 is a nice and warm day here. but, may get buried in snow this weekend.

Hi Teri,

Can you do 2 workouts back to back? If you have a swim & bike scheduled, you could do your swim then dry off and hop on the bike.

For me, I do my workouts in the morning. So I would get my run or bike in first before the Y opened then I would go to the Y for my swim. If you have more time on the weekend, you could double up then. If you are training for your first Oly or Sprint, you should only need to do each sport 2 x per week so you wouldn't have as many days with two workouts.

Is your 22 week plan from BT?

We made it through the first week of the New Year, anyone have any big training plans for the weekend? Any early season races?

Going to try and get a 20K ski in tomorrow. Try out my new water bottle, with the morning temp supposed to be around 5 I wonder how long before my water freezes. Maybe I could make some hot tea.

Friday night brick.  I got an hour on the trainer and a 15 min run in the 15 degrees snowy hills (a light snow was falling).  I feel good, it felt great.  Tomorrow is a 90 minute run, Sunday is a 2 hour bike ride.  1st week of 2011 was a great start.  Some of you have seen this video (oldie but goodie) but for those of you that haven't hope you enjoy the triathlon song!

Thanks for the explanation.. I was wondering about that ... the 1000 meters that I am doing on Tuesdays and Thursday are in sets ( in yards)of 400/200/100/400. Basically I do 400 yards of continuous swimming then switch to 200 yards of kickboard then 100 yards of pull buoy. I then take a 4 minutes in which I do leg exercises in the water. I then finish with a final 400 yards of continuous swimming. Starting next week I am going to start focusing on speed now that I have that distance.

My only goal for Saturday is to hopefully sleep past 6am! No work outs for tomorrow since I have been in the gym every day the last 5. I am planning on a bike ride on Sunday (15-20 miles). Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Hi All-

Sorry I have been MIA... to introduce myself, my name is Justen and I am edging towards forty.   Completing an IM has been a lifelong goal, and this is the year I talked myself into it.  I have a great, patient wife and two young kids, and live outside Boston, but grew up south of Madison.  That is why I targeted IM WI, even though it is rather far.  In my younger years, I did a marathon and several century rides, but this will be a big step up for me.  I did a short tri last year, and loved the experience.

I look forward to our journey together.  Happy New Year!~Justen

I started physical therapy to get rid of plantar fasciitis/achilles tendinitis that has been going on and off for about 3 months. My therapist is starting me from scratch in terms of doing weight bearing strength exercises for now. I have a tendency to over do it with stuff and I think that might be why my MD sent me to PT. Running probably won't come into the picture for about another month. I think I need to relook at trying to do an HIM in September

Nice 8 mile run this AM.  Alitte cold but when the sun came out it was just right. Legs alittle tired the last 2 miles.  Good week with 3 runs and 2 swims and 3 visits to the weight room and a planned ride tomorrow morning.  Most likely it will have to be on the trainer since we are suppose to have a big snow storm coming.

Got in my strength training this morning and I have my trainer ride this afternoon, that makes 6 days of straight training .  That has not happened in I don't know how many months.  Part of the reason is that I know some of you guys will get on my case, that is what mentor groups are for I guess.  So far this week 3 x running, 2 x weights, and 1 x swimming.  Not bad for a first week back.

Lenny, to answer your question about races, my first race is 2/12/2011.  It is the Indianapolis Mini-500 5K Training Race.  My first road race ever, I am excited.  If I do everything on my list, I will set PRs (as long as I finish) for 5K, 10K, 15K, half marathon and HIM.  All because I have never run them before.  Should be a fun year.

Ok, had my worst training day ever. Was doing some core work yesterday and pulled a muscle in my neck. It was still a little sore this morning but didn't want to miss my ski. Couple miles in my neck started to get worse, last 2 miles I could hardly move. Now I am stuck on the couch. If this isn't better by Monday I will have to go to the chiropractor, I don't have time to miss workouts.

Thanks, Brad.  IM WI will be fun.  I have ridden around that area a fair amount, and it will be an interesting and challenging race.  We will definitely need to compare notes as we prepare!

Back and neck pain is the worst.  I never had issues with it until my early 30s, but they flare up from time to time, including recently.  Muscle relaxers and pain killers...  you will get through it.  Just think of the guy on the IM special this year who gutted out a lot or all of the marathon with back spasms!

Nice job on the swim. Nice plan on the run, you don't want to increase your distance too fast.

Wis bike course is very tough. The biggest is like riding in the Tour De France, with all the people lining the road.
