My friend and I are signed up for IMFL. We rented a condo on the boardwalk ~5 min walk from the starting area. My wife is going to appreciate it while she goes 3-4 hours between seeing anyone.

If you are at the Boardwalk condos it is right next door to Boardwalk hotel and very close...probably less than 5 minute walk to start. You can walk out back door of condo building toward ocean and walk along a boardwalk to swim start.

It is a great location but be sure to get parking passes and wristbands so you can get in and out of parking lot and hotel on race day and few days either side of race day.

Hey guys,

glad to see you guys working at it.  For some reason this thread isn't showing up on my blog under the race talk, so I thought no one was visiting.

I just started the 1/2 IM program aimed at BSLT in the spring, then I'll do the BT 1/2 to full bridge.  Still nursing a case of plantar faciitis I stirred up this summer while trying to learn to run faster.

We had cold (for West Texas) and wind on Saturday.  35 degrees and winds 18 from the north with gusts to 30.  It was a tough ride.

I just signed up for the Gulf Coast Half this past weekend. In mid May, so its pretty early relatively speaking, but I think it will be a great chance to do some course recon, especially considering I have never done an ocean swim before

Training otherwise is fine: daily (or almost daily) running and trying to figure out how to really use a power meter. Trying to not take things too seriously and risk burning out by July!

Hi,

I'm new to BT, but swam with some of you at IMFL 2011 on the Thursday training swim.  You were so cordial, I was compelled to join you in 2012.

Is anyone bringing their kids to the race?  I have an 11 year old daughter and 7 year old son.  They had a great time last year playing with other kids their age during the race.  Apparently, they are not intrigued by simply watching triathletes and waiting 12+ hours to see their Dad!

By all means DO IT! You will show them a great example and also it will give you a lot of encouragement in those moments of the marathon when everything sucks (trust me, everybody hits that spot). You will be looking forward to see them and that is a great source of inspiration.

Gulf Coast - Gulf Coast is a great race for IMFL course recon.  It is early, and due to the heat (in '09) I thought it was harder than IMFL.

Kids - I'm part of a group and we are brinigng our kids.  I've got 11, 9 1/2, 8.  They love the race environment, and missing school for a trip to the Fl beaches isn't too bad either Smile

Edited to add:  We are going to have to figure out something for Halloween.  They haven't figured out that we won't be home for Halloween, and in our neighborhood they do pretty well.

Do your kids enjoy coming to triathlons?

My kids are 13-22 and love Ironman races. My first they were 8-18 and we went to IMLP the prior year to check it out.

My kids love to volunteer and enjoy supporting athletes. They are quite good at coming up with clever motivating things to say. In smaller HIM they stayed and encouraged the last finishers out on the course.

Our kids have come 3 out of 4 years. Last year they stayed home but it was my choice due to injury and I was unsure how the race would unfold.

They all have commented all year that they were disappointed they didn't come last year.

Our plan if I am able to train properly is to consider driving down and having kids fly down Friday, then stay the following week which they get Thursday and Friday off and all drive home. We like kids to have post IM fun time as I'm more normal after the race and not as tense and wound up.  In 2010 we flew home Tuesday they went to school next day and then had a 4 day weekend.

If you want to bring them or not somewhat depends on your spouse and how the kids are.  The non racing supportive spouse has to put up with our training, our nerves before the race, and depending on how fast or slow you are, IM day can be very very long.

Getting a condo close to race site is helpful as they can go back to condo to relax, eat, swim and get a break....my family often takes a nap while I'm out on the bike.

It's been 9 weeks since surgery and I was able to start walking 4 days ago. I have a bad limp and am very slow but progress. I never expected learning to walk again would be so difficult.

Still wonder how I will get to the starting line trained November 3rd, but my PT IM finisher assures me that I can. I hope she is right.

believe in the PT Kathy!!  can't wait to see you again in november!!

Jasha, BSLT 70.3 is an awesome race. it gets a little warm.  barely cracked 100 when i was there three years ago.  pretty sure it went about 112 last year.  justwood on this thread might be heading back there again this year.  have fun... ;-) edit..  just saw you raced up there in 08'... you know whats up! awesome!!!

welcome to BT Rob!  i'm part of the group linda (Havin'fun) is talking about.  last i checked there are at least a half dozen families in the group bringing kids.  halloween is gonna be a blast.  second what she said too, our kids (3, 5, & 7) love the beach and race environment. we don't mind pulling them out of school for it, especially at this age.

I appreciate you keeping me posted on the Havin'fun group.  My kids are very concerned about Halloween!  We're staying at Laketown Wharf and they're looking for me to find a trick or treat option.

I'm sure it will all get sorted out as we get closer to the race.

Thanks again for the replies.

Go Kathy go!  Must be tough learning all over again.  Step by step - hang in there.

Trainings going good for me.  Still trying to lose the weight I gained since IMFL, 2 cruises, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Super Bowl (recent add). not too bad but I want to drop 8 - 10 lbs.  The good part of belonging to a tri team is that we have scheduled practices so I pretty much have my week set up for me.  If I was left on my own, not sure how much I'd get accomplished.

As I posted on the main forum, I had my new bike fit 2 weeks ago.  Very comprehensive 3 1/2 hour BG fit. We talked a lot too so that added to the time   Anyway I was so excited to get out on it.  Went on a 72 mile ride and hurt the entire way.  Probably the toughest ride I've ever been on.  My legs felt like I rode 200 miles.  Boy was I disappointed as I expected so much.

Talked to my fitter the following day and basically he said I was pretty stupid to go on an aggressive  70+ mile ride right after I got a new fit.  Because he stretched me out quite a bit he said I was using new muscles or muscles in a different way and I need to get used to it.  So he said for immediate relief I could drop the seat 15 - 25mm then work my way back up.  he had raised the seat 68mm from when i went in.  So, I'm hoping.  Won't get a trainer ride in until Thursday then I'll put in a shorter, slower ride on Saturday.

I have a few running races in the near future but not a tri until Florida 70.3.  I'm getting anxious so I might find at least a sprint or Oly in the area.

enjoy,

Duane

BT Halloween kid party at IMFL?

I noticed that soon after I registered, that IMFL was right before halloween. That sucks, halloween is my favorite holiday! I think we all need to figure out a fun thing to do to make up for it
