Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CHRIS - "Compartmentalize" much? Wow, you'd have to in order to balance the volume of thraining you do with the demands of that clutch of kids at those interesting ages. Mercy! Your really do have some impressive numbers there for running and cycling, and as you think uyou know -- a fluid trainer will indeed improve the quality and quatntity of winter riding. Earlier today there was a psot from Tyler about the Spinervals videos, so if Santa does gift you with a trainer, you can hten order a Spinervlals or two to keep your amused/challenged/tortured. Seriously! ![]() ![]() It's perfectly fine to be doing "just running" right now; may peopel put their off-season into chunks, basically focusing on one thing at a time for a while. I have normally tried to keep it at two at a time, but so far this off-season it's been heavy on the swim and extraordinarily light on the run and bike (this'll change post-xmas). I like the feel of it, just thinking about one discipline fairly intensively at a time. (I'm also doing a lot of Yoga....but that doesn't count quite the same way!) Good for you to plan redemption at Music City! What exactly happened during the swim that caused you to bail, and while you're at it -- which aspects of the swim do you think will require the most work? As for Augusta, there is one person* here who has done it, and another* who is planning on it. And then you'd make three! You all can have yoru own Augusta sub-group! (* I'm still trying to learn who is who, so the names escape me right now.) If you do foloow through with Augusta, that would be a superb prep for the November marathon. Not only will you be halfway there just in terms of straight run distance, but the intangible level of suffering that the HIM run will require, having been preceded by the 1.2 and 56 miles of the swim and bike, will help with the suffering at the later stages of Battlefield. Perfect! Finally, as for those great rolling hills..... The toughest time I ever ghad with a half-iron was at Atomicman in '02. At some point I will tell you all the things that factored into the number it did on me, but for now I'll just say that if the "rollers" around you are similar to those at Atomicman (west of Knoxville, adjacent to Oak Ridge), those are full-blown HILLS in my book! Finally-finally, those numbers in the final paragraph are terrific goals to shoot for. That's some pretty serious mileage! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DAVE - I indulged myself by looking at your Pittsburgh Tri report, and while it was just a quickish perusal, here's what I saw: 1.) You WILL be competitive. You say you're not sure what that means, but to finish where you did in your second tri in a VERY tough age group, you certainly have the ability to be very competeitive; heck, you're just about there right now! 2.) Most definitely the course was mismeasured long if you were in the top 10% of the swim with a pace of 1m57s/100y. In more accurately measured races, that pace would land you about in the middle of the swim pack, I would think. 3.) Piranha (bless their hearts) have a small rep for doing things such as the late buoys and/or mismeasured course, a la Pittsburgh. My last triathlon with them had a swim course that was mismeasured SHORT. that's a bonus for me, the swim being my weakest link....but I paid for it by flatting on the bike and then "accepting" a DNF by virtue of taking a ride in the "sag wagon" back to transition. Bah! 4.) Nice bike pace, especially given the relative infancy of serious bike training. As I posted to Chris, a fluid trainer will make a big difference in your cycling; good move!! Moving on to general stuff ---ASre you fully recovered form ITBS? that can be a bugger, and a miserably painful bugger at that. My first and most serious onset of it got me at about mile 10 of my very first marathon.......and I had no idea what the problem was. The effect, though, was to put me in a world of running until the aching became too great, and then walking until the aching had receded far enough back to make running seem possibly/conceivably tolerable. It was a tough day at the office, and not at all what I wanted from a first marathon! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Do you have a high arch, perchance? ITBS tends to favor high-arched "supinators" as favored prey items, so if you are high-arched.....what model shoe are you in? If it's a stability shoe with a dual-density midsole, that is very likely causing your foot to roll outwards too much, which is a major contributing factor to ITBS. Just a thought! Yeah, Macca is really just a bonebag. Talk about a skewed self-perception! Finaly, that's a sweet schedule you have, nice and diverse. All you maybe need is a 100-miler ultra-run to complete it! ![]() ![]() Glad you were finally about to crack the BT code earlier today! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MATT - Actually..........consider yourself fortunate that the swim is coming easy to you, because for many people starting into serious swimming as serious adults, it is a real struggle. So, in the world of 0 to 1650, you just might get to 1650 a whiole lot more quickly (and happily) than the plan calls for. Here's hoping! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MATT again - Oops? Is 0 to 1650 for the run or for the swim? I'm confused!!!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ------------------------------------------------- TOP OF PAGE TEN THOUGHTS ------------------------------------------------------- First, MANY, MANY thanks for thsoe of you who have posted abundantly and supportively while I have been scrambling trying to address all the bios, while struggling mightily with holiday plans. I needed a fair bit of help, and without asking for it, you all sure delivered. I am very appreciative of your heartfely efforts!!! Second, I hope I have now commented on the bios of everyone who is new to me. If I have missed you, I will try to find out your identity ASAP -- or you can let me know with a "Hey, what about me??" Third, I am leaving for a few days as of mid-morning tomorrow -- down to NYC to our daughter's place, and our son will come in to join us. We'll get back late Tuesday at the earliest, and weather-depending, maybe even sometime on Wednesday. I don't have a laptop, and while I could use Jane's, it is foreign to me and will probably be more bother than it's worth. So, probably don't expect me back here until Tuesday or Wednesday, okay? Fourth, as I always say when I leave the scene for a while --- play nicely together while I'm gone! ![]() ![]() Fifth is just a follow-up to the fourth, and it';s to say that I think we have a great group here, with supportiveness and mutual interest abundantly obvious already -- so, even were I serious about #4, I would never worry about THIS group not "playing nicely together" in my absence! G'night! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Matt, I bet your running will come back easier then you think with such a strong background. I think most people are horrible at swimming at the beginning if they didn't swim as a kid. What's the program you're using? A steady progression kind of thing? Ok, I have to ask....why is the swim team kid your favorite? Johanne
I know the running will come back fairly easily, especially once the weight drops a bit. Swimming I'm just horrible at. I grew up a block away from the pool and hung out there every day as a kid. I can flop around and get from a to b, but it's slow and ugly. A friend who swam in college was giving me pointers on my stroke and his initial assessment was that I looked like a "Tasered yak on ice" when I swam. 0 to 1650 is just that, it gets someone to the point where they can swim 1500 meters. Not a pastor, but I am an ordained priest. The name actually came up during a Dungeons and Dragons game a handful of weeks ago. Seemed like an ok fit.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Morning All, Well it looks like the group has been closed? If so I wanted to see if eveyone was ok with doing 2 things. Im 42yo but my memory is like someone of 242yo, not much stays upstairs long. I wanted to see if everyone could post what city and state you are in or just state, that way we all now who lives where. Also I wanted to see if you could when posting for the next few months put your name at the end of your post. You can add your signature to a post automatically by going to Setting at the top and then click on the Personalization tab and where it says signature you can just put your first name or the name you want to be called. I dont know about everyone that has been in a group, but when replying to several people on one post, its hard to remember their user ID vs a first name. I will start, my Name is George aka Jito and I live in Mobile Alabama Steve - if you are heading out till Tuesday and I feel for your wife when you get back, because this is one chatty group, so you might have about 10 pages of post to read to get caught up. Sarah - NO fear, your friend in here. I will post Sarah's profile. She is 21yo, fast as lighting and a wild a crazy gal. ?????? - Sorry like I said I cant remember user names that good, but it's to croi?? or something like that. Congrats on passing your test and good luck with your company venture. Well I did another 2 mile run today with what everyone posted on the HR to help me out and it was a good long long long run, but good. I ran the full 2 miles with no stopping. I tried to slow the pace down as much as I could and it really worked. Below are the stats from Wednesday morning and also this morning. Wed 12/21
Friday 12/23
As you can see the pace was slower, but I also kept a lower HR and was able to run the entire 2 miles with no stopping. I also timed my cool down like some suggested and it took 3 minutes to go from 175 to 131 and another 4 minutes I was down to 120. Not really sure what all that means, but I think I found the pace I need to keep for a while. Again thank you all for all your post. For the ones that are leaving out of town today for Christmas and will not be reading the post. I want to wish you and your family all a Merry Christmas and please be safe out there.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() STEVE - Thanks for your comments. I do believe the Pittsburgh Tri swim was mismeasured. I was probably doing 1:20 / 100 yds last summer and am up to (down to?) about a sustainable 1:15 now. There's no reason I would do 1:57 in those conditions. To top it off, the sprint is all down river. (Olympic will be a different story this year as it a starts heading up the Allegheny and ends heading down toward the Ohio). Re: ITBS. I did indeed discover that I have high arches when I went to my local run shop to be fitted for shoes. I wear an 11 when measured in the normal horizontal way. But when my foot was measured vertically with the arch collapsed, it was a full 1 1/2 sizes smaller! I was put into a Nike Lunarglide3 http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?l=shop,pdp,ctr-inline/cid-1/pid-401068/pgid-401062 which is billed as a support shoe best for mild to moderate overpronators. I was also fitted for Superfeet inserts which felt great in the store, but when I ran in them, their arch hit my foot too far forward and it was painful, so I took them out. I'm not completely out of the IT woods yet, but I can run 4 miles without terrible pain (up from 1/4 mile at its worst) so I'm making progress. THOMAS - Thanks for posting about TrainerRoad.com, I'm definitely going to look into that. More gadgets! Regarding your goggles fogging up on the swim, some goggles are more resistant than others. I use this stuff: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1204.htm?color=11590 It lasts a couple of weeks before you have to reapply. When it comes to passing people while swimming, my first comment is that's a good problem to have! The first way to deal with that is to make sure you're in a lane with people around your own speed. That way there'll be less passing. Here we have US Masters Swimming groups where the pool is usually divided by abilities. If you have recreational swimmers in the way, it can be a real pain. The protocol is to tap the person in front of you on the foot. If you're near a wall, they should yield at the wall. If you're near mid-pool, you can pass on the left (I'm assuming you're circle swimming counter-clockwise). Just watch out for oncoming traffic! ALL - All this talk about Spinervals etc. motivated me to move my trainer into the media room last night and try my first ride DVD with Coach Troy. It was a brutal tempo ride up Mt. Lemmon near Tucson (On the Road 3.0 Training Rides), but I finished it! Didn't make for a fun swim this morning, but I'm sure I'll have plenty of recovery over the holiday. Merry Christmas to all. - Dave |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JITO - Yes, I closed it because we have a good-sized crowd right now. If history tells the truth, several people will disappear over the next month or three, so overall I think we're staring at a good spot -- top-heavy now, maybe, but will settle nicely over time! I was planning to accumulate all the info you were asking for, and I will post that later -- but not until sometime-next-week-later. I was even fixing to add the user name of each person, on top of your request for real address and actual name; will that suit you? I am kind if dreading what will be here when I return......but that goes with the turf of doing what I do. That said, I was figuring it would start up post-xmas, as mojoworkin' did last year, and i'd get home and THEN things would get in gear. But noooooo!!! Nice stats on the run, and I'M really impressed with its presentation on the page. Pretty smooth, baby, pretty smooth! Mostly, though, as you say you seem to have a found a pace that works -- and even works well, it seems! As gor the cool-down time, the time it takes to get the HR down, I think it's within reasonable limits. Really, the stats and anecdotal info are excellent. Well, done, you techno-geek, you! Happy holidays to you, too. Are you just staying at home and coccooning? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() THOMAS - That's what I thought, it's just that someone else's post made me question myself (at my age, that sort of thing is happening more and more frequently!). Travel happily! Going to Switzerland sounds mighty fine, although I've never been. Maybe next life!! |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Spinnervals, gotta try them, hopefully Santa will be nice to me and bring me a KK. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MATT - Yeah, but if that tasered yak can learn to execute proper body roll, and keep its elbows high during the recovery phase, and implement a strong catch during the pull phase and keeps its elbows high then, too, it can become a solid swimmer in fairly short order (that's in yak-time, however....). Is your friend-the-collegiate-swimmer available off and on fro further advice? If so, that will be ideal. Swimming can be very difficult to figure out what exactly you're doing, and just as an example, many people are sure their hands aren't crossing over the imaginary midline upon entry, when in fact they are wildly crossing over. (Ooops!!) Somehow I got the impresssion that the swim went well.....but maybe not all that well. Be of good faith, anyhow, as swimming may be technical but it is also not just doable, but also masterable (note: "masterful" does not necessarily mean speedy, but rather simply comfortable in most water conditions for a decent stretch of time). Glub, glub! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DAVE - Congrats on summitting Mount Lemmon; Coach Troy should get you as part of his stable of studs! That's a very impressive swim pace, and about what I was thinking when you said top 10%. I am very, very happy when my pace is sub-2:00, and my overall swim plaxcement is usually between "top" 32 and 45 percentile.....so when you posted 1:57 I had a hunch it was an off-measured course. If your arches are high, and you are still having issues in a mild/moderate shoe, I think you should ask around for a show with no medial support. Although you were observed with arches that collapse, it may be that they don't really do it enough to warrant added medial support --- which just makes your foot lean more laterally, which will exacerbate the ITBS tendencies. Look at the bottom of the shoes and try to tell me where the wear is, especially how much is along the lateral sides. That should be pretty telling as to what your foot is actually doing when actually engaged in actual running. Are you familiar with Road Runner Sports? They have an enormous mail-order operation, and I think their policy is tsill 60-day trial. That means you can order, give a shoe a good test, and if it doesn't work you return it. I'm just mentioning that because finding the right shoe can be a complicated process, but at least RRS can help make it less expensive. keep me posted on this! (www.roadrunnersports.com) |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() See you're on the computer Steve. Was hoping to catch you before you were off for the holidays and wish you and Lynn a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Have already picked up some useful info from the group. It still amazes me how you can churn the posts out to such a large group and remember who did what when! I had a great walk/run on Wed. Race walked for 56 minutes then RAN (yeah) for 2 min, walked 1 min for 30 minutes straight, then walked another 1hr8min back to start - about 18km. My legs/hams were getting tired after the 30min of walk/run, so didn't want to push too much more. The longest walk/run sequence over the last 3 months has been about 16 minutes. I am SO excited about the possibility of actually running this year! Off to Bikram for 9:30 and then doing a 20km walk on Saturday. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be pouring rain. Have a wonderful time with the family and see you in the New Year. Anne

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ANNE - You JUST got me -- and I'm glad of it, because your account of Wednesday is so positive. That was a huge effort, and it sounds like it yielded great results. And then there is tomorrow, a mega-walk effort. I ill send mojo for a cessation of the rain while you are out there....but someof that may have to be watered-down (as it were) in favor of mojo going to our OWN travels. Those are different this time, as we are driving to Albany and will stay there this evening, and then get a 7:05 train to NYC tomorrow. that leaves us car-less in NYC, but I think the transit system there can take care of us just fine. It's been snowing here all morning, but seems to have stopped and the sun is out. It's about 5 hours to Albany, but a good part of it is through the Adirondacks, so we need nice weather to make for a nice drive. Here's hoping! You and Ken, have a great, restful few days. See you back here Tuesday or Wednesday! And enjoy tomorrow!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anne - How do you like the Bikram? we have one here and I have not gone and checked it out. I did one yoga class up at my rec center and the following week my back went out so I have not been back. The yoga did not mess the back up. I been having back issues for years, sometimes it works great but about 2-3 times a year it freaks on me and Im out of training for about 1-2 weeks. Sometimes its so bad that I have to stay in bed for about 2 days. I have been to a chiro but they want to charge me a price that is higher than a 2400sqft home would cost. So Im planning to get back to yoga so see if that will on working the core of my back. Please let me know your thoughts on the Bikram. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey folks - anybody run in barefoot-style running shoes? I"m intrigued. I have had bunion surgery (years ago and would not do it again) and wear orthotics -but only for running. So not sure how those shoes would work given I'd run sans orthotics. Here lots of great things and feel they'd force me to run off my heels. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey-back to the pool, the first time in the pool that can count as a workout since September-only 1300 yards in sets with some drills. Still swimming about 1:50-2:00 per 100 but a little more winded than I used to. Not as bad as I expected but not as well as I would like. The good news is, my pool appears to have figured out the chemistry/ventilation issues as I don't suffer the asthma/cold symptoms nearly as badly as I was, but I am in the pool for a much shorter time than I was at my peak last summer. A run tonight and a little trainer time will get my first triple workout since Sept as well. Great group that has assembled this season-looks like fun. |

I'll bet now with the new ventilation or chemistry at your pool, that you'll be picking up your pace as your lungs get re-acclimated to fish life. Only drawback to swimming is the dang chlorine smell that seems to permeate my skin and then later in the day I swear I stink like chlorine even after a shower and body moisturizer. |

Merry Christmas to all. - Dave |
