I like really mixing it up and I like running with a group now! I used to not want to because I always felt so slow and I didnt want to hold anyone back or be in the back all alone. But With a group I never feel that way and it helps me to keep pushing when alone I just sometimes want to stop. Running/riding/swimming with a group is a great way to push yourself |

Brutal but the help a lot. On the run side Friday intervals are great. Hope everyone is having a good week. You do love those! They're painful, but in a good way |

I love a good trail run - unfortuantely there is not much of that in FL! The trails that we do have in the Everglades tend to be wet through the rainy season, but dry out Feb-April. Maybe I'll have to hit those up post-marathon! |

Another one I like is a 50-60 mile bike with with no wind and a few climbs to keep me honest. That sounds just about perfect right now! |

KERRYEVE - 2012-01-11 5:35 PM I have been doing Troy Jacobson's super 6 spinervals program. what a killer! it leaves me without enough energy to run or swim, but I'll get there! Yup! If you want to do it, and still bike or run, don't be afraid to tone it down a bit. But, if all you have to do is bike, keep at it!! |

But I do know one thing for sure, I NEED BIKE SHORTS! Not comfortable at all. Any recommendations? Like is there different padding because I need the most!! |

"I went to REI and tried on several, bought 2 different kinds, Just what felt right. I use the less padded for shorter rides and more padding for the longer ones. I also found a good saddle is also nice." Edited by tkr2770 2012-01-12 11:42 PM |

Can someone help me on the lingo. Like what is 4x100 and 200 swim, 200 kicks. Im lost. Also whats the best way to keep track of your swims? Does anyone use something electronic like a garmin? do they even have it? Sorry for all the questions. 4x100 means that you swim 100 yards (or meters) four times. You take a break every 100 yards. The break might be given as 10 seconds, or they might say to do 4x100 on 2:00, which means that you start a new 100 every 2 minutes. In most pools, 1 length of the pool = 25 yards, so 100 yards would be 4 lengths of the pool. In the super-long Olympic pools, they are 50 meters, so in those, 100meters = 2 lengths. 200 swim just means to swim for 200 yards, or 8 lengths. 200 kick means that you'll just kick for 8 lengths, usually with a kickboard. I write my workout on a small piece of paper. If you get it wet, it'll stick right to the pool deck. I count my lengths/distance a few different ways. My most effective way is to count down lengths. If I'm swimming a 200, or 8 lengths, I'll push off the first wall and think "8", next time I push off, it's "7"... all the way down! There are a few electronics that can do this, here are two options: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/03/swim-watch-battle-finis-swimsense-vs.html For big sets, like 10x100, I'll move a kickboard along pool tiles to count. One tile per 100 or something. Once the swim hits 400 yards or more, I get confused. I'm sure I've swam extra yards on occasion, and less yards. It can be really helpful to know your rough pace. I generally swim 100s on 1:30 in practice. This way, I know that 200 yards will take me 3 minutes. 500 yards will take me 7:30.... And no apologizing for questions - that is why we're here!! I hope I didn't confuse you more! 1:30 per 100m is just plain too fast! |

Member 32 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Elaine's Awesome Start to 2012 Group! - Closed! I signed up for the CapTexTri on Memorial Day. I think the Olympic distance will be a good early goal for myself. Since the run distance will be the least of my concerns (except for the wobbly leg aspect), any suggestions on how many bike/swim workouts should be done during the week. I can hit the pool 3x a week during school. I was thinking maybe a trainer set and a long bike ride on Sunday with a jog or two thrown in. I have a few races 5/10k and a 10 miler leading up to this too. Any thoughts? |

The holidays and vacation have not lend me time to have some structure, but I am hoping to change that. Hope everyone will have a good week of training. |

You looking to rock the CapTexTri, or just have fun in the early-ish season? How do I feel about my biking? I don't feel like I am going to die I have completed a couple of 24 miles rides and I can definitely improve. I would like to be strong and confident in the bike. I will be riding my bike to school 3 days a week but these will not be 'training rides' but they will be miles. I view this race as a fact-finding mission that will give me a clearer idea of what I don't have leading up to the summer season and the 70.3 later in the year. So, long story longer, I would like to be able to get on the bike and have some juice left to have a killer run all while having a lot of fun. Did I answer the question? LOL |

So, long story longer, I would like to be able to get on the bike and have some juice left to have a killer run all while having a lot of fun. Did I answer the question? LOL Yes I think a nice, solid interval ride and a longer ride are an excellent idea. As for running, I'd shoot for 3x-4x runs per week, with 2 of them being short/easy, one being your long run, and the other one being whatever you want to do. But, if you only get out 2x, don't beat yourself up. Just try to keep in mind that going out for 2-3 miles when you have a free half hour will benefit you in the long run. Note: When it comes to running, I believe that more, slower miles are the route to happiness. I believe that the sum of your weekly mileage is more important than the distance of your long run (to a point). So, I think those few, extra short runs serve a purpose and aren't junk miles, at least for the majority of people. |
