WHEN CAN YOU START MENTORING CONSISTENTLY: Right now!!

NAME: Elaine (ratherbeswimming)

STORY: I'm a former NCAA swimmer. After college, and many failed attempts at becoming a runner, I fell into the sport of Triathlon. I like the variety and balance that three sports provide.

FAMILY STATUS: I've got a boyfriend and a dog.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm training for a Marathon at the end of January. After that, I plan on kicking my own butt as often as possible on the bike. My bike fitness is what needs the most attention right now. I believe in training with what works for you - power, HR, RPE. I believe in science, but, more importantly, I believe in FUN.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: My first 70.3 (Half Ironman), a few Olympic distance races, and a handful of sprints. I also threw in a few adventure races, running races, and a beer mile.

2012 RACES:  My season is a bit undecided. I'm a proud member of the Rev3 Triathlon Team, so I'll be doing a few of their races (Half Rev and Olympic distance) and traveling as much as possible! I've got my sights on a 2-day 150 mile charity ride in April. I'll also be getting my USAT Level I coaching certifiaction after a clinic in March.

WEIGHTLOSS: I'm here to maintain. I’m here to help you maintain or lose. Coming off of the holiday season can often require a little bit of improvement J

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: I’ll help you plan for 2012. I’ll post questions. I’ll answer your questions. I’ll post relevant articles, studies and observations. I’ll check in on your logs – which you better use! – and encourage other group members to do the same. We’ll form a small, supportive group within the big happy BT family. I’ll try to give you what you need to keep you strong, focused and happy - maybe even a few virtual races or training events!

Hi my name is Kerry and I live in Deerfield beach! I did a sprint triathlon 20 years ago and would like to do a few this year! I'm 53 years old so sometimes the aches and pains get in the way of my training. I am a personal trainer so I think I know what I have to do I just need a little push!

I have been competing in running races for about a year now. I have done two half marathons with my best time is 1:49. I am doing a full marathon at the end of April. I run a lot of 5Ks and 10Ks. I just start riding a bike about a year ago, didn’t even ride one growing up! I did my first Duathlon a month ago. I have swam all my life, but with no technique, that is one reason I want to join this group! I am looking to do some Sprints this summer along with my running. I am planning a full Ironman in 2013! Thank you!

Hi, Elaine...I'd love to join your group.  I just came off a disaster of a triathlon season (two, count 'em, two knee injuries) which pretty much shut me down for the last six months.  I'd be interested in your group specifically because it seems to be geared towards beginners so far, and for all intents and purposes that's where I am again!

Also, my screen name could easily be "RatherNOTBeSwimming", so I'm looking for some motivation and direction to at least get me to the screen name "UsedtoHateSwimmingbutNowIt'sPrettyCool"

I'll post my full bio next week...I'm looking forward to a healthy new year!!

It's awesome that you want to get back into triathlons - and you're local, too! I'm in Fort Lauderdale.

Have you been looking at any specific races? There are a lot of great options in the area

Hi ramiedd!!

Which half are you targeting? I think you'll love it. It's a great distance - and it's about racing smart, not just going all out.

How are you handling training in the winter?

Welcome!

I battled IT Band syndrome at the beginning of 2011, and I'm working hard to keep it from coming back. Consistency is key. What injuries did you have?

I can definitely help you get to "UsedtoHateSwimmingbutNowIt'sPrettyCool". There are lots of different methods, tools and options out there - the tough part is just finding the right combinations and variations that work for you.

Looking forward to that full bio!

All:

I've got a few quick admin things to make our group awesome

1. Put your real first name (or if you're uncomfortable with that on the internet, a fake first name) in your signature line. It'll help everyone be a little more personal in the group. If you go to the top, click "Settings". Under "Account Settings" click on "Personalization". You can write your name and anything else you'd like there.

2. Use your logs! If you do already, great. If not, they're a wonderful tool. You don't have to make those public, either. In "Settings" click on "Training Log Settings". Under that tab you'll find "Privacy Settings". If you make it public, you're done! If not, select the "Only allow your "friends list" to view logs you have made public?".

3. Friends list - add us! Assuming you haven't reached capacity, you should add the group. "Settings" -> "Training Blog Customization" -> "Friends". Just put the usernames of the group members there, and they will all be linked from your training log

We can definitely help improve that swimming! Welcome to triathlon!

How are things going on the bike?

I'm looking at a full in 2013 as well. My goal for this season is to build my volume and stay injury free.

Any thoughts on longer than a Sprint this year?

How are you handling training in the winter?

I have actually been running a little through out the winter.

A little back ground on me: I have been a cyclist most of my life. Very little racing, but mainly to stay in shape. Up to now, cycling is the only sport that I have enjoyed. I always wanted to participate in a triathlon, but was too busy with my career to train etc. I was finally encouraged by a friend to participate in one and when I made up my mind, I only had one month to train. It was an olympic distance. The bike did not worry me, and swimming has always come natural but the run was my concern. I had never ran 6 miles at one time in my life. So I trained for a month. mostly ran and did better than I thought. But even better than the results, was the fact that I was hooked.

Back to your question, I have been trying to build some type of a base for running. Fortunately, the weather has been good here and I have been able to get out often. With two kids, I find myself running at night after 9 PM. I somewhat put together a training plan for the Try Charleston half in April, If I can't make that, I will find another Olympic distance event and shoot for the half in Miami around October. I grew up down there and still have family.

My hope is to compete in 3 or 4 events in 2012.

I'd like to join! My name is Jen and I recently turned 40.  I've done distance running on and off for the past 8-9 years.  I was 3 weeks out from doing my second full in 2009 when I fractured my foot.  A combination of injury, relocation, and other fun stuff led to me being inactive most of 2010 and gaining about 40 pounds.  I became active again in the last 8 months and lost 30 of those pounds.  I did two sprint tris just horribly this summer because I wasn't properly trained at all. My goal is to train smart in 2012, be stronger and fitter than I've ever been before and hopefully work my way up to the REV3 Maine HIM in late August.

I'd love to join if I can! I'm determined to make 2012 and fantastic year...physically speaking. I have been interested in triathlon for so long, but to this point I've done little to turn myself into a 'triathlete'. I did one try a tri several years back and have been running and cycling off and on since. I've just never been able to get focused enough to do more. I have big plans for 2012 (maybe too big?). I want to do a half marathon in February and May and I hope to do Epic Dartmouth in July...

Sounds like a good plan!

Cycling is my weak point, so maybe some of your speed and skill will rub off on me during this mentor period

Managing training and kids can be tough, but it's definitely possible. Late nights and early mornings are inevitable. How old are your children? Have you ever done morning workouts, or do you prefer evening?

Congrats on knocking those 30 lbs off.

It's awesome that despite some races that weren't stellar, that you're still into triathlon. That's great, and I'm sure you'll have a smart season this year.

What are your winter workouts like right now?

Welcome, Tanya! We're happy to have you. You're definitely in the right place to start 2012 off on the right foot.

Epic Dartmouth isn't out of reach, but you've got to start now - and train smart! That countdown clock on the website is rolling!

Are you going to use a Beginner Triathlete plan to build up to the race - or have you decided on one? What is your training like now?

I've been doing fairly well over the last few months - swimming twice a week, running 3 times a week (on a treadmill) and spinning 1-2 times per week. I have started the Ironfit program which I've combined with a half-marathon program I found online. I'm starting week 4 of the 'just finish' program today, but I'm thinking I might want to switch over to the intermediate program.

Weight loss is one of my goals and I'm not reaching that one so far (although clothes are fitting much better). I am definitely able to eat those extra calories that I'm burning. I plan to try and focus more on my diet in the coming weeks.

A little more about myself: I have a super-supportive husband and an amazing 3 & 1/2 year old daughter. I'm a veterinarian and I have a pretty busy schedule (including on call), which has been part of the challenge in the past.

Thanks for your confidence that Epic Dartmouth is doable if I start now and train hard. I'm pretty excited about the next 6 months.

PS. I hope everyone is having/had a wonderful holiday!

Elaine -

I'd like to join a group this year. Just started tri last summer. Right now I am signed up for a marathon at the end of feb (gotta go run in a sec...), a HIM in June and am planning for another HIM in October. I will add the odd local sprint as well.

I raced a ton last year and this year I am going to prepare better for fewer races and see how  that goes.

thx!
