Subject: Newbies

I just read an some comments that readers made about the biggest problems in the sport of triathlon (USA Triathlon Magazine).  Several people were unhappy that many of the events were loaded with newbies in the sport.  I understand that new people in any sport can slow things down and get in the way.  However, we are all newbies at one point in time.

Anyway, for some reason the comments rubbed me the wrong way.  I was a newbie last year and did really well considering I bombed the swim.  What do you think about newbies or first timers?

When i watched one of the ironmans on tv this year they had a guy that was over 80 and that was his 22 race.  he wasn't new like some of the others but he still came in late that night.  I think that the most people that complain dont like being up showed by some one new to the sport and that is what makes them unhappy.    I think they need to have a reality check and go back a few years when they started and be glad no one said anything to them.

I've been sick lately so no training to report, but regarding the comment about new athletes, if people feel that way it doesn't always show. My first race had LOADS of beginners. The experience was great and the encouragement I got from the people who had been in the sport longer was the number 1 reason I decided to continue with triathlon. To me, having new athletes at a race always makes me want to show them that the sport can be really fun.

My problem with big races isn't "too many new people" so much as it's "too many people in general." The larger races also tend to be really well run so I consider it a byproduct of that and don't stress too much.

I know the local big events set people off in waves depending on your target swim time, this should eliminate most concerns. And as you rightly pointed we all begin as newbies, I'm still a green horn who has yet to have the pleasure.....

Logged some run time last night.  Legs felt heavy, must be that I'm out of shape.  No worries though just keep on grinding and it will all come back eventually.  Good news though I stepped on the scale for the first time today since January 1 and found myself to be 5.5 lbs lighter.  Keeping up on the exercise and a diligent eye on what I'm eating and I'm slowly winning the battle of the bulge.

Great job on the weight loss and do not worry, you will be back in the swing of things in no time!

After reviewing bikes for the last three weeks I eventually placed an order on a CAAD10 105, wasn't too sure whether to go for a CAAD or Synapse. Hopefully she will fit and feel right when I get her as I couldn't find anyone to trial them on but with a 14 day return I should grand.

Couldn't agree more with this statement. And I think that the term "newbie" is a very broad term as well. I ran into a "veteran" of two seasons at a race last year who was completely lost in transition and caused a few people to lock the brakes up and almost take a spill. Although not new to tri's, she was new to that very course.

That is the very reason why I go and run the whole course at least once the week before a race.  I also try to train on course as much as possible.

Marsh, sweet!!!  I'll be interested to hear what you think of the CAADX I've heard some good stuff!

I'm up early (for me) to get some food in me then hit spin class today.  I swam 600 yards Wednesday (1200 for the week) and was going to do a Spinervals disc too.  But it decided it was a tad early in the season to start packing in double workout days.  Though I may put in a mile or 2 on the dreadmill after spin class today....

Amen to the baby steps.  Last night got cold and since I don't have an indoor trainer (no need for the most part here in South Texas) I skipped a bike ride and instead ran some intervals on the "dread"-mill.  Legs are worn out, they sure weren't ready for the bike, may take a night off tonight, maybe do some core work, stretching, and some strength training to let them recover.

Keep on keeping on....

How are you taking that gulp of air? Most of the breathlessness feeling comes from taking a big breath and having the CO2 levels in your body build up. For me, I found that taking a slightly larger than normal breath and immediately, but slowly releasing it once my face hit the water worked best for me. This helped me relax and build up the distance in my swims.

I done 30 min on the cross trainer then 900m swim this evening, I took note of the above advice and it made a significant difference. Although I only take slightly larger breaths during my stroke (with the odd gasp here and there) my pool is only 18m and when I was turning I took a HUGE breath filling my lungs thinking this was helping, tonight I just kept the same size breath on the turn and I didn't get tired at all, definatley made a difference as I wasn't starting each length with a stuggle and it all felt more connected.

10 Mile Run 1:18:19 (7min 52sec/mile) Av. Heart rate 163bpm

Had a great run this morning headed out after an 8.30min/mile but felt really energised so I ignored the watch and just focused on my form. My running confidence hasn't been that great over the last few months due to the lack of being able to run but I never tired at all along the route, no doubt inspired by my lastest book 'born to run'.

There's always a mind battle going on during this hilly course but this was a game of chess that I controlled from start to finish, only 2sec/mile of my 10mile pb.

Split times ( 7-9 uphill)
1 - 7.48     4 - 7.32    7 - 8.11     10 - 7.56
2 - 7.51     5 - 7.32    8 - 8.16
3 - 7.43     6 - 7.41    9 - 8.13

Nothing beats a good training session...

just got done running 2 miles.  It took me 21 minutes but it was nice.  I just remembered why i hat running.  I suck at it.  I love to swim and bike but not the run.  looks like i found my weakness and have to find a way to love it.

Just a thought ?  my gym has a indoor track and i was the only one running on it.  why do so many people like to run on the dread-mill.  granted i would have been out side running if it wasnt so cold.  any thoughts on this?

How cold is cold where you are? It was about 18 degrees F here this morning and we were all outside. I wore a long sleeve compression shirt, a jacket, running tights, and of course gloves and a headband to go around my ears and I was warm enough for the whole 12 miles. About the only thing I won't run in is ice! I really don't like the treadmill!

Had a good 12 mile long run today. Here is the link to my Garmin.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/141531108

This time last year I was training for my 1st marathon and ran 8 miles for the first long run and ran it at a 9:49 pace. Quite a difference a year has made! Now I am on my 3rd marathon training session and ran today at a 9 m/m pace for the 12 miles.

The thing about running is that you improve very quickly I couldn't even a run a full mile last Feb, once your able to run 8 miles I believe the majority of the hard work is done.

As for the dreadmill obviously a personal thing but I hate them, I can t control form and it takes away the sense of freedom I gain whilst running.

Remember its the speed that kills you not the distance, a good way to determine if your training at the right speed is to string a sentence together, you should be able to do this comfortably.

Temp is 45F here at the minute, we're having a real mild winter.

Looks like a nice running path you have there, I have a garmin 610 and find Garmin connect a class (awsome) system.

3 miles in 20min on the eliptical, followed by some leg strength work and a 500meter swim working on breathing....did a 150 straight...the longest consecutive swim I have ever done! It was a good day!

We are very fortunate here as we have several great parks to run in, they are pretty hilly, but they are very beautiful. We also have a pretty nice bike path, although it is still in progress at the moment. I think when it is done it is supposed to be 100 miles long!

I love my Garmin! I am not sure if I would know how to run without it! I just read about the new 910XT. I want that one if something happens to my 405.

It was 16 when i went outside.  i dont have a running jacket or tights, so it is cold to me.  I have to buy things in baby steps.  my wife only allowes me to have so much money for my sport and i spent it all on swimming gear and a membership to the gym with a pool.
