tallytom - 2013-02-25 6:23 PM Hopefully those winds will lighten up. The cool weather is driving me nuts here in N. Florida. 4 hr rides in the mid to upper 50's (starting temp much cooler) is not nice, especially when the wind is strong and no sun. I'm sure some others here would like to see that weather about now, but it's colder than you think. I have to bundle up to tolerate it. Other than that, my training is on point, but still tryinging to dial in nutrition. Hopefully everyone else is having training success. Tom

Agreed. I'd like it to start warming up so I can work on hydration, heat maintenance and actual nutrition.  The Sunday ride was freaking brutal because of the extremely strong winds.  But I sucked it up, tried not to expend too much energy and reasoned that the winds were helping me train.

I look at it as a good warm up for Galveston if you're going to race there too.

Greetings to you all, looks like this is going to be on the schedule for next year, was wondering what your plans had for mileage run/bike last weekend. Gasparilla 1/2 marathon last weekend in Tampa seems like a possibility for next year and seems like it would fit in nicely. Moved from Spring FM1960 area 20 years ago and I still crave Pappasito's if anything that will make it worth it.

Thanks for your input. Happy Training

80 mile bike with nice strong winds Saturday, 12 mile run Sunday with thunderstorms in the area. Nice race simulation.

Sorry I'm late to the party.  Was supposed to miss out because my wife was deploying but luckily that was cancelled.  Then IMTX sold out so I was out, then I found a way in, so I'm in!

Looking for a better day than last year, that is my goal.

About me?  Not fast, not slow.  IM #7.  Stay at home dad for a few more months.  Kids 8,7,6, & 4.  Awesome super supportive wife.  Been on BT since 2007, I just don't post much.  Set for IMFL in November as well.

Now to go back to page one and figure out who I get to meet in May.

Happy training, Chris

Yes, I did a Half Marathon last Sunday before last.  It fit perfectly.  I'm doing Fink's plan which called for a Olympic tri that weekend, but there were none nearby.  I know it's not the same, but I substituted the HM for the Oly and just added some extra training.  Last weekend I did 75 mile bike with 5 mile run brick.  The next day I did a 13 mile run.

Check out the free plans here if you want some reference, especially since this is your first. It will give you a little structure if that's what you need or want.

I'm also following Finks competitive plan and I skipped the planned Olympic race last weekend. I did a 1'15 trainer ride (a tad wet out so didn't ride outside) followed by a 10k at race pace (6:55 per mile). Felt pretty good. Happy w where I'm at. Just hoping to stay healthy and I wouldn't be satisfied without saying, I am over this cold weather, please warm up. Not looking forward to tomorrows 4 hr ride, 45' transition run in the low 50's. C'mon this is Florida. Rant over

I have pretty much the same w/o tomorrow.  Supposed to be in the 30s here when I start.  Isn't Spring Break right around the corner?  Don't people go to the beach for that?

Yeah, Spring break is coming up. At least here in the panhandle the weather is not nice, at least for the beach. My bike today was a high of 50 (prob. for the last 20minutes). The only body part exposed was where my balakava (sp?) went around my sunglasses and mouth. Multi layers and shoe covers as well. It kept me warm. The wind was tough, had to strip the sweaty clothes off before i hit the run, so not much of a quick transition. (74+ bike, 6m run). I figured this gained me some mental strength points.

Good luck w/ yours tomorrow (ouch-30*'s).

Yes, I'm doing the HITS half in Ocala. Haven't ridden the actual course that I know of. I rode around and through the area on a 200k brevet and a century ride before. In the Florida Forums there is some members who rode it recently and provided some feedback regarding the roads. I'll probably get down there early on Fri. and ride the course.

How was everyones training this weekend? Sunday I did 94.5 miles on the bike course, at least most of it was on the bike course. Cold and windy but pushed through, legs still had some juice left but I had minor pain in my lower left quad by the knee.  The wind was outta the south/southwest, cross winds were brutal as were the head winds - it is what it is I guess.

Average speed was 17.7 MPH, yes I know that's slow but I'm no super biker.  i just got aero, worked on nutrition and hydration while monitoring my HR.

The route I took is below

No training this weekend. I did lay down a solid 1:32 on at The Woodlands Half Marathon Saturday and used yesterday as a full recovery day. Started the 2nd phase of TriDot this morning in prep for IMTX.

4 hours on the bike and a 30 minute run afterwards on Saturday.  It was super windy out near Hockley.  You know the way back will suck when you're doing 25 with your HR in the 120s.  LOL.

Hi All, first time IM'er here.  Just wanted to say hi and thanks for all the knowledge shared so far.  I did Austin 70.3 last October and am doing a local 1/2 IM in 3 weeks in prep for IMTX.  I'm considering do the race in a few weeks at full IM pace, as kind of a dress rehearsal for May....thoughts?

As far as training plans, I'm using the structure of the free BT plan.  Did the same for Austin and it went well.  Been getting in between 12 - 14 hours of training a week, with my long rides between 90 - 108 miles (granted 20% of that is on the bike trainer).  Ran (no pun intended) into some ITB issues 6 weeks ago, so the long runs haven't been there.  Slowly rebuilding run mileage so everything stays pain/nag free.

Enjoying the journey so far.  Got in 103 miles on the bike yesterday (22 on the trainer)....the wind was not kind.

Hope everyone has a great training week!

I would not do a full IM as a "dress rehearsal", whether it be at slow pace and especially at race pace. And further to boot, you've been nursing an injury. The Half IM will suffice, as will a good structured training plan. This is your first IM, toe the line well trained, not overtrained or injured. This is my .02.

Thanks Tom for the concern.  I should have been clearer....that's my fault.

I meant I am planning on doing the HALF IM at a FULL IM pace.  So rather than trying to finish the 1/2 IM with a personal best time, pace myself slower at what I think I could sustain for IMTX (based on HR and RPE).

I want to use the 1/2 IM as a practice race for IMTX and not actually "race" it, basically to work on pacing myself.  Just wondering if that's a good approach.

Thanks

Tony

I would push your swim and the bike harder than your ironman pace and take the run easy due to your ITB issue. I really don't think it translates. I think a half at full pace would be a little to easy.

Dealing with major ITB issues late last year I follow http://strengthrunning.com/2011/02/the-itb-rehab-routine-video-demonstration/ with strict adherence and have been running strong since .
