Slightly North of Metro Park (is that Westfield/Clark area?). Will be heading up your way tomorrow on my way to New England to ski. Did NJ State two years ago. Water temp was 90 and air temp was 100 degrees by 11 am. Well run event, pancake flat.

Hey you peeps that just ran your first marathon.  I'm about 10 weeks out from my first.  What was going through your mind while you were training?  What would you have done differently now that you actually did the marathon?

Be utterly and completely respectful of the distance. Running past 20 miles is a humbling experience and those last 6 is where it typically falls apart for most. The wall hit me hard during my first mary and I am a better runner for it. You gotta trust your training and gauge your expectations accordingly. There are some truly gifted runners who can crush 26.2 and there are others that struggle and it takes time to learn that distance. Your best bet is to be flexible, go out easy, ramp it up slowly if you feel well and have fun.

I purchased the 910 and love it. I'm a numbers freak and it has been a great tool for pushing myself harder.

Either the 305 or the 910 (not familiar with 310).  I purchased a 610 before I started doing multisport.  It doesn't switch between run/bike very smoothly. Avoid the 610

I'm another one for the 910XT. I like the 610 as a running watch, but it's not multisport nor particularly waterproof.

Only down side on the 910 I've noticed is that it's not real accurate in tracking the swim. Sometimes it has me swimming on the sand and other times doing triangles rather than squares. Other times it seems to be very accurate.

YES!! Made it under the wire.  Happy to be here!

Name: James

Story:  52 years old.  Father of 2 daughters (19 and 15), been with the love of my life for the past 10 (got it right the second time), work behind a desk cleaning up the environment for the past 25 years, sports fan (Yeah Giants, Niners, Warriors and Sharks - last i will share about sports here), own the very best dog in the world, have a crazy cat that thinks she is a dog, am a suburban farmer and been a true fan of the see-food diet (I eat everything I see) and beer.

Was with BT several years ago and completed my first triathlon. Got distracted and quit exercising (the "too busy" excuse).  Just had the come-to-Jesus talk with my doc... way too fat, getting old, way too lazy, pre-diabetic heading for shots,  on pills for several things caused by my undisciplined eating and sedentary lifestyle.  My girls (partner, daughters and dog  [the cat could care less]) want me on the planet for  a while so i figure it is time to get serious.

Races in 2012: none

Races for 2013:  Sprints in June and September.  Starting very slow to rebuild a base.  I have a habit in the past of going out of the gate too quick and getting burned out or hurt....really want to pace myself this time for the long haul.

Current training: dabbling at the gym this week.  Starting regular program on 1/2/13.

Weight loss: YES, yes, yes!  Doc "suggests" trying the Paleo diet thing (no grains, no dairy, no sugar, and [gulp] no alcohol) for 30 days.  Thinking about trying the Whole30 plan.

Why I would be a good mentee?: never been one so hard to say.  How about "I am a good listener" and understand that guidance is a good thing.

Thanks to everyone in advance for being part of my team!  Here's to success!

I have a book that I want to recommend for you, it will turn yor life around. The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing by Phil Maffettone. It will help you a lot with nutrition and will definitely get rid of your diabetes. Very close to the Paleo approach but with some low GI carbohydrates. It addresses fat balance (Omega 3/6/9 ratio), polyphenols, micronutrients, etc.

You will change from night to day if you follow the approach. Many years of healthy living too.

Joe is absolutely, spot on with his advice. Just like the half IM you did a while ago, the marathon is a humbling distance. In my particular case, I'll be running Houston on the 13th. Since my plans to make December a mostly running month went out the window with work, travel, family and other things I had to readjust my plan accordingly and I will still do it but much slower than originally planned. And I still don't know if I will meltdown at the wall.

What I want to make clear, is that the marathon is a distance that requires a lot of training (which you seem to be doing well) and an execution that is adequate to your fitness level.

Ernesto, I've started reading "the book" and have a few questions. I've read through to the end of chapter four where he is talking about the 180 formula. This seems pretty radical. Have you or others in the group followed this? I notice in earlier feedback to a group member you encouraged his to 'go fast'

I assume that this is only for training and not racing - is it recommended for all training?

any thoughts appreciated

There are others with more experience than me but here's my comments Jackie.

I ran my first marathon this year. The Kona Marathon (same course as the IM run so very inspirational), it was hot and humid - but after finishing I decided to take on Triathlons so it must have been ok. Last 10km (6 mile) was amongst the toughest things I had done due to the heat/humidity. If your event is hot, managing your body temp is very important. I knew that, but it still got me.

I think following a plan is important during the lead up because it can help you avoid overtraining when you're feeling great and undertraining when you're not.

Also nailing the taper and entering race as stress free as possible add to the enjoyment of the event.

Finally, as Joe said, respect the distance - don't blow yourself out in the first 6 miles (leave that to the last) Smile

I did the RAGNAR SoCal this past April as a member of a 12 person team. Was an awesome experience and highly recommend. Doing the race with 6 people is much different than my experience as there was more down time with two van. Regardless of that, some things to consider are:1. A good van. We did this in a minivan and it was pretty tight with 6 people and gear. The investment in a nice ride will be well worth it. 2. Bring enough clothing to change after each leg. And put used gear in trash bags to keep the odor down in the van. Enough said. 3. Develop a good plan for driving. Usually ran and then rested a leg and then took the driver duties. Strategy changes with only 6, but good to understand this going in. 4. Running multiple legs at odd hours was not as tough as I thought, but did not put a lot of time in running with my headlamp on at night. If you are not use to it, practice. This is a great race. My team was not in to win, but to enjoy the experience. It can be a lot of fun. Come up with a great theme and decorate the van and enjoy the journey. Neal

go in my log and look at my workouts, you will see that I rarely go above my MAF (maximum aerobic function) when I run. My MAF is 146 (180-39)+5 because I have been injury free.

Welcome to all the new folks out there.  Having been with this group for a year now, I can say this mentor forum MAKES A DIFFERENCE (if you commit and you invest).  We can all attest to hearing the collective and individual voices in this forum during training sessions, long races and other decision points in our endurance training.

Ernesto is a wise and patient mentor as are many other voices in the group.  We are a friendly, supportive, compassionate and family/life oriented group.  We do this sport because it compliments our lives, but does not define it.  We slip, we fall down and we get up again.

That said, this group is not about excuses but accountability. When the alarm goes off at 4:30 am to get out for a 90' trainer ride before work, I think to myself how would I feel having to post that I blew off a workout because I'm tired, blah, blah, blah.  If you follow the collective wisdom of Ernesto and others your performance will improve.  I far exceeded goals and expectations I set for myself this year and I attribute the motivation to keep going at times to this group.  While my family and friends get the gist of a PR or breaking a barrier, these folks get it and being able to report back a triumph (or even a failure) to this group is so worthwhile.

There are no right answers or dumb questions so please never hesitate to ask.

Well said Joe, totally agree with your description of Ernesto's group and its value!

For the upcoming January challenge, here is an example of how everyone in Ernesto's current group is posting the information for the December Challenge:

In my case I'm giving a quick description of what I did today (a run at lunch) and then updating the info in Bold under my name. From the tally we can see that Mitch and Matthew are beating everyone else during the Dec. challenge!

"Finally got a 7.4 mile runch after several days with too much food, drinks and little sleep"

Mitch Swim 4 - Bike 15 -Run 21 - Rest 4 - Total 40 Time 30:54:39
Matthew Swim 9 - Bike 10 - Run 11 - Rest 4 - Total 30 Time 36:51:51
Jackie Swim 0 - Bike 4 - Run 18 - Rest 4- Total 22 - Time 32:37:51
Mark Swim 4 - Bike 9- Run 10 Rest 7 Total 23 Time 20:17:00
Jim Swim 0- Bike 6- Run 14 Rest 5 - Total 20 -Time 15:41:14
Ernesto Swim 2 - Bike 8 - Run 11 - Rest 7 - Total 21 - Time 28:08'18"
Charlotte Swim 1 - Bike 8- Run 7 Rest 3 Total 16 (To Goal: 14) Time 9:59 (To Goal: 10:01)
Joe Swim 9- Bike 4 - Run 2 - Rest 1 - Total 15 Time 10:05:12
Gabe Swim 0 - Bike 7 - Run 8 - Rest 11 - Total 15 - Time 16:30:00
Chris Swim 0 - Bike 0 - Run 13 - Rest 8 - Total 13 Time 11:57:41
Samy Swim 1 - Bike 0 - Run 10 - Rest 8 - Total 11 Time 8:03:23
Andy Swim 2 - Bike 0 - Run 6 - Rest 12 - Total 8 - Time 5:30:47
Barry Swim 1 - Bike 2 - Run 2 - Rest 7 - Total 5 - Time 2:58:52
Scott Swim 1 Bike 0 - Run 1 - Rest 2 - Total -2 - Time 2:

So, does this mean we update our line every day/workout, or is there another time interval we should go with?

Yes, we usually post on a daily basis whenever we did a workout(s).  If you did not do anything for the day, no need to post an update.

got it.

Becoming familiar with the site this a.m.

was trying to figure how to add people in the group as friends, think I got it and working that out.

Also how to access the groups emails sting. Got figured out by going to site clicking on "forums" then on the group name.

Have been reading about everyone this a.m. and looking forward to joining the January Challenge?

Do just let you know we want to do it? then you track the points based on our logging or do we email you?

thank you.

We usually log our workouts and then post the updates on the tally. You don't have to do it daily, but most are pretty good at doing it like that. You don't have to make your logs public, but is encouraged. That way I can look at your workouts and give you feedback, but that is an optional too.
