1700 yards in the pool today which was a lot more than I was planning on which I think is due to taking less rest between laps.  I even busted out back to back 100's with only a few seconds rest which was good for me.  I think I'm approaching lesson time very soon.  I feel a lot more comfortable in the water so I don't want to pick up too many bad habits on my own.  Might even sneak in a run later to see how my foot feels.

I'm going to start swimming on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I'm a pretty confident swimmer, but I usually only go swimming when I'm on holiday.

I'm going to use a workout i found in one of the BT articles. And since I can only swim twice a week I'm going to focus more on proper technique and form than distance or speed. Good idea?

Got my hotel reservations for the USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships lined up today!

Extremely excited to go watch them, this'll be my first trip to a pro race!

That's awesome, so jealous! I've gone the last 4 years. I didn't realize how much of an impact this made on my family until last year, my 4 year old was standing on the barrier (me holding him) ringing his cow bell, and yelling "go Hincapie" and "go JellyBelly". That made me smile. One of these days I'll find a jersey small enough for him. I'll miss it this year, especially since this will be the first time the women will be racing also, my wife would really dig that. Find out what charity is involved and you might get to ride the course before the pros do.

I will look into it... I'd like to ride the course, but it's also possible I'll just spend the week as that redneck "tailgater" at the bike race

Thanks a lot.  I'm generally excited to swim right now.

Went for a quick run tonight to test everything that has been hurting lately (hammy, calf cramp, foot).  Ham and calf are fine, foot hurt a bit but once it loosened up it felt great so I think I'm done with the "resting" phase.  I'm going to slowly ramp back up to where I was.

I hate seeing a pack or riders fly by when I'm driving.  Makes me jealous of them.  I need to get a mini cowbell to keep in the car.  I always think how awesome that'd be if I was on a ride and someone started belling me.

Wow it was amazing weather today! Got about 2 hours in our group ride in the high 60's! Sadly it's supposed to be like 40 tomorrow   Oh well, can't complain about a ride like that in the middle of Jan!

These are my mile times from my run today,  6.2 miles is it ok that my last lap is my fastest?  I saw your log Chris and saw that you get faster in the middle, I really had to tell myself to slow down at first cause usually my first mile is as fast as the last.

So I had an excellent run this morning, so for sure I had to have a horrible swim.  I know I havnt swam since last saturday, but damn this is tough.  I need to focus on getting in a rhythem and staying there.  I had to share the lane halfway through and it just threw me all out of whack.

Why cant I just canoe or something?  I promise I won't hit you guys swimming.

I think I broke my little toe this weekend. I plan on seeing a Dr. about it to get an x-ray just to make sure there are no bone fragments but could use advice on anything else. For instance, should I just go to my local family Dr. or go someplace that specializes? Are there any tricks that anyone knows about for athletes? From what WebMD said little toes don't typically warrant a splint or anything and suggests I'm out for 6 weeks to make sure it heals properly but will wait on a better first opinion from the Dr. before throwing in any towel. Anyway thanks to anyone who can add anything.

Cheers,

Brad

PS, had a great race on Saturday, got second in 40-45 and more important did it in only 20:47, not too shabby...

looks good, seems like you paced it well. I'd much rather my last mile was faster than my first (means you didn't blow it too early)

As far as in my logs, my pace can look really strange per mile because of the geography where I run... lots of uphill/downhill depending on what direction I'm going.

Congrats on the PR!

ahhh that sucks!!

I would probably go to the Ortho myself, but I assume the fam doc will be fine too. What did you do?

Great time too! A mixed weekend you've had!

cracked my toe on the end table leg at the hotel we were at. Stupid I know. I'm worried about upcoming races but will try not to stress too much until after the Dr.

I second the canoe idea and would like to add in the option of paddle boarding.

Awesome job on the 10k.  I think it's great to have a bit left in the tank at the end because you know you're capable of even more possibly.

Brad - in regards to which doc to see, u should check what ur insurance requires. Some require a referral before u can go see a specialist... Otherwise, go straight to a specialist. i would recommend to find one focused on sports injuries. They'll help u recover and can guide u on exercises to stay fit while recovering.

X2.  If you call your regular doc for an appt for a physical or something they'll say see you in 5 months (especially with the flu and whatnot going around) but if you explain the situation they may even give you a referral to see a specialist without a visit to your normal doc.  Whatever you do though, attempt to follow protocol and check with the insurance company.  Years ago I went to my doc, he sent me to a specialist, then to another sports specialist, but somewhere along the way the referrals weren't going through and they end up trying to hold me responsible for a $5000 MRI when all I should have been paying were my $20 co-pays.

Congrats on the 10k!  Those are nice looking splits.  It must feel good to finish stronger than you started at that distance, I wouldnt' know anything about that tho.  The 10k is my absolute least favorite distance to run... I don't seem to have a pace I can hold between a 5k and a half marathon.

100% agree here. If you can get in to see someone directly that deals with things like this it will help a lot and help you address the issues vs just the injury or pain (in this case it sounds straight forward, you hurt it vs overuse), but someone that deals with athletes will be best equipped to get you back and running quickly

Did my first swim session this morning and was about to complain to the man and woman who were just chatting at one end so I couldn't turn around properly, fortunately I didn't and they turned out to be triathletes from the local team!

They both happen to swim in the same days as me and kindly offered to give me some pointers which is great!

3700m in this mornings swim... It's amazing how quick it is to lose speed over sets when you knock back swimming for a month or two. Oh well, good times nonetheless
