Originally posted by bulfrog I am currently lying on the bed in the motel room. The bike is racked. Transition bags have been handed in. I'm all ready to go for the big day tomorrow. The weather forecast is not great. It's going to be a windy day, which means my best case scenario is gone. So it's just going to be a case of working hard, pushing through the hard bits and doing the best that I can. And of course trying to enjoy it. I'm feeling pretty good I know I can do the distance. It's just a case of low slowly and keeping aead of those cutoff times. For those who want play at home, my race number is 1053 and I start at 815 nz time (I think that's 215pm east coast time for you Americans) and the challenge wanaka website should have some live updates. So, I'll talk to you latter guys. Hopefully with a nice shiny finishers medal around my neck.

Go you.

I will try to stalk you. You will hear me cheering in the tough parts!

11/20 - Walk - 35m even - 2.00 miles - 17m 30s /Mi
Short after school walk squeezed in before getting ready to take the wife to dinner. Only ONE car passed me in that entire time.

A little proud of myself today. 7 miles running and 1.5 hr on the bike. That was pretty much ALL I did today, but still

Mike: The Venice Him is in November. It also has an Olympic distance. I may do it AND the one I am signed up for in May. Though, I may only do the Olympic distance. The volume of training is a lot and there are tons of other things I want to do as well.

Hi All,

Interesting week for a number of reasons. Good news is I got the all clear on my biopsy. Skin cancer is unfortunately very common in Australia.

Training time was restricted this week due to work commitments but I managed to get in 3 gym sessions and 4 runs this week. Today I watched a triathlon and picked up a few tips, particularly in transition.

Interesting to note the survey responses that we predominantly train alone. I know I'm holding off joining a triathlon group until I'm in better shape. What prompted me to ask was that there was a tri group training near me the other day and there was an Athena in the group. She was clearly way behind everybody else in the group with the support and encouragement she was getting I think she'll improve rapidly. I may have to rethink my approach. I've also noticed that there are informal groups on Facebook and Meetup.

End of the month weigh in coming up next week. Hope to hit my target.

Looking forward to race reports and reading how others are progressing.

Mike-

I think it was more of a "it felt like it took up my whole day because nothing else got done", rather than a "yeah, I could have done more" kind of thing... lol!!

I AM A NORDIC GOD!!!!!

Yeah... I'm really Thor after Saturday...

4 days to post, hang on to your hats!

2/18:
Run- .35mi in 4:37
HR: 138avg, 154max

Restarting "Barry P"... messed up my timer

2/19:
Swim- 750yd in 20:00ish (2:40/100)
Total in pool: 800yd

This was an interesting day... I just flat missed my run, but I did make it to the pool. My 100yd pace is slowly getting back to normal. Also, got a call that morning that my son's school was on lockdown because someone brought a gun to school. He wanted to be brought home, and I don't blame him, so I was there the instant the lockdown cleared... along with pretty much every other parent. I still should have laced up the running shoes tho...

2/20:
Bike- 21.47mi in 1:42:55 (12.5mph avg)
Walk- 1mi in 19:07
HR: Battery died....

Okay... there were so many mistakes and miscalculations on my part that I pretty much deserve the amount of pain that I am in...
*Didn't charge the HRM the night before even though I saw the caution light on my last use... I was steady in the 150bpm area before it crashed.
*Planned 14 mi ride over normal short group route.... obviously, I went a bit farther.
*Back to riding the Denali... Never swapped my seat back on, bike is almost 10lb heavier and the gearing is a lot more agressive.
*I haven't been on a bike in 2 months, and not this bike in almost a year.
*The wind was from the South at abt 15mph... I rode north making the return leg dead into the wind.
I... am an idiot... lol!!! Learned my lesson tho!

2/21:
Walk- 1.56mi in 30:33
Weight- 272.5 (-2.5)

Even though I pretty much failed to meet my run schedule, I am stoked to see the weight drop. Now, let's see if I can continue the trend into this week. I walked this morning because I am simply too sore to run. Had a dream last night that involved me getting spanked (not the good kind)... That may be a bit on the TMI side, but that's how much my arse hurts...

What a great week you had! Well... Except for the spanking.
That was it exactly, those workouts kicked my tush for the day... And more.

Hi guys.

I'm away for the week, so my full race report can wait till I'm back in front of the computer.

But the cliff notes version; great swim. very strong winds on the bike, they really sucks the energy out of me. The tank was empty by the start of the run, but kept moving and got the job done. Not impressed with my finish time. But very happy and satisfied to get to the finish.

Having a week off to rest up the legs and will be back into training soon.

Have a good week and train hard everyone... and of course thanks for all the support.

Rough week last week! Is it normal to get sick often during training? This happened to me when I trained last year for a half marathon (not really a runner) and seems to be happening now as I get moving on my HIM training. Did 2 B (approx. 10 miles each) and 1 R (5 miles). I was down and out for about 4 days.

Hoping to get a couple swims in this week. Also 3 R and 2 B.

Anyone else training for an early summer HIM distance? What are you training distances/times at per discipline?

It's cold where I live, so we are probably going to have snow until at least April. Any tips for staying on the trainer longer? I get bored and don't really think I'm pushing it hard enough. I usually get off because I'm bored rather than because I'm "done"!

Thanks!
V

Unseasonably warm weather, already over 40*. Went for a bike ride, 2 laps of the River Rd. Pleasant ride, no music, just wandering thoughts.

Hey V
I am training for a HIM in late May. I am at about 8 hours of training per week going up to (gulp) 14 hours this week. I have been doing 2 hour trainer rides. I use Sufferfest videos and music to get through. I also use fear of coming in last, or dying to keepe in the saddle.

I find the fear of coming last is a great motivator too.

Have you ever tried using a Sufferfest video? I LOVE them. VERY well worth the money. They are good workouts and they have a "story line" and some humor put in there. I get a much better workout with them than I do by myself or with any other video like Spinnervals.

Hi All

Yes I do have too much time on my hands at the moment.

Here is a good training video. "An oldie but a goody"

Who can provide next week's video clip?

I'm fortunate that I'm able to train outdoors all year round. I know of a few people that love Sufferfest.

Well... I sorta raced today. Actually, I just ran. Yesterday the doc diagnosed me with a 50:50 chance of either an infection OR a huge allergy attack. So we chose to do a round of steroids for a week to see if that will help rather than going with antibiotics. When I told her I was running the HM this morning she told me straight to my face I was stupid. The temps at the start were at 28 degrees. I chose to be smart and after not sleeping last night for chills and did this on the treadmill. I am glad I did. I was really hoping to do this on "pavement' to see how much slower I will be, and to check out the course AND get the damn finisher medal! BUT, I will live to fight another day. And, because it was on the treadmill, as slow as it was, it was a PB for me.

Losing fat is not difficult. So why does this continue to be an elusive goal for so many people, who “struggle” just to lose a few inches?
