Well, I did some speed drills tonight (4x50's) and I was pretty pleased.  I found I do prefer breathing on my right side, but was able to breathe ok on my left, too.  I also found that when I swim faster, I can breathe once every 4 strokes, instead of every 3.  I also think the number of strokes per 25m went down by 2-3, but I wasn't counting.  What I do know is that :15 faster per 25m is pretty fun!  LOL!  I'm glad tomorrow is a day off b/c of church!

Ok, so I have another training question.  I am finding that I'm not putting even amounts of time in on the bike and run, compared to my swimming, so I'm thinking about changing my schedule a bit.  Here's what I have in mind - get up earlier and go to the gym in the morning before work and get my swimming and weights in.  I'm thinking about doing that every weekday morning, but I'm curious, is 5 days of swimming a week too much for a newbie?  Also, where can I find a good swim training plan?  That would then free up time at night to focus on cycling and running and spend less time at the Y.  I would probably alternate days for the bike and run:

Mondays: bike

Tuesdays: run

Wednesday: off (church)

Thursdays: bike

Fridays: run

Saturdays: bike and run

Swimming five days per week is probably a little much.  I would probably do 3 - 4, but that's just me.

As far as swim training plans, I've found workouts on the site here and on the web in general.  You can google "swim workouts" and get a bunch that you can look at.  Taking workouts from other people's training logs also works out pretty well.  I've also been thinking about picking up a book called "Workouts in a binder: swim workouts for triathletes".  Everything is laminated so you can leave it by the side of the pool.

A reason to focus on the run and bike (bike in particular) portions is that in a triathlon, the time spent biking and running usually exceeds the swimming by a fair amount. I can totally understand training certain sports a little more heavily because of preference, though. That is what has kept me out of the pool.

I'm horrible.  My wife emailed and said church was cancelled tonight b/c the parking lot is still a sheet of ice (we have a decent number of elderly who attend).  My very first thought: "YES!  I can get in a bike workout + weights!"

I'll probably burn in hell for that one.

No way.  That would only be the case if you went and made the parking lot icy so that you could get in more workouts.

There are workouts listed on this site that have a focus of one of the disciplines. Check them out for swimming. I think it lists them by Sprint and/or Olympic distances. Personally I was thinking of doing a run focus... but I cannot do the schedule they put there. So I am trying another way.

REMEMBER... swimming is where one can gain a lot of ground. This is due to the fact that most Tri-athletes hate swimming and do not put in the time there.

Hi all.  I got some speed drills in tonight in the pool.  Kind of enjoyed it, too.

So, how is everyone doing?

I used the elliptical machine at my apartment complex last night.  It was too cold to go run once I got off of work at 9:15 and the treadmills in the gym suck a lot.  I feel like it's better than nothing, but that it probably didn't really help anything either.

Today I'm planning on running in the gym at school on the treadmill.  It's cold and kinda snowing here.  I'm not so happy about that because it is interfering with my training.  On the other hand, I am happy about it because I have a ski trip planned for next weekend.  Last year it was so warm that it rained on Sunday and melted all the snow so I only got to ski on Saturday.  I'm hoping for no repeats of that this year.

Hey everyone,
I had a great swim last night with my local tri club.  Tonight, I am donating blood, I'm a regular, and then I have a hockey game against the only team we can beat.
-Erin

PS. Jen, I hope you have lots of snow for your ski trip.

You're going to go play hocket after you donate blood?  I'm impressed!  I'm usually wiped out for a day or two after I donate.

Hope your hockey game goes well tonight.

Well, I was a little tired at hockey last night but I survived my blood donation.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and an awesome next week.  I'm flying out today for a week long conference.  I packed running and swimming stuff, so hopefully I will have time to workout.

How are you guys doing today?  I'm seriously lacking in motivation.  I have a six-mile run planned for today and I'm just not feeling it right now.  Getting started is sometimes the hardest part of the workout.  Hopefully, everyone else is doing better than I am today.

Hey nothing is better than just getting going on it. You will feel much better about yourself and your training if you go out and do that run. Just take a deep breath and think on how much this run will help you in your goal. You don't want Spring to come and you not be ready for it!!!

After the second mile or so you will settle in and be happy you did it!!! I can't wait to hear about it when you get back!!

Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I managed to get off the couch and go run.  I had the same thought - anything I get out and do is better than sitting on the couch!  The first two or three miles were pretty chilly and kind of tough.  Once I got past those first two miles, my body started getting into the grove and feeling better about the running.  I did manage to do the full six miles, which is the longest training run I've done since September.

Jen - way to go on just getting out there and getting the run in.    I'm at work at the shoe store playing with all the fun gear and stuff - I love my part time job!  I got a free pair of Brooks Glycerin 5's.  :D

This morning was an hour on the bike (14 miles?) and two miles on the t-mill, even though I really wanted 3-4 (not enough time).

I hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend - we're getting more snow it loosk like.  It's coming down pretty good, too.

That sounds like an awesome part time job!!  Great benefits are always important.

Nice workout today!  Good job on getting everything in - two workouts and work is really impressive.

Hope you don't get too much snow.  Stay safe.

That is so great Jen.

We are here for you. It is hard during the dark months (winter) to keep the motivation, but I am sure you are so glad you did it. Keep up the great work!

How was everyone's weekend?  Anyone get in good workouts or do anything interesting?  Plans for the week?

I found out today that my school's rec department is offering a swim challenge called "Swim the James".  The goal is to swim 40 miles during the Spring semester, which gets you to different points along the James River.  I'm planning on signing up.  It should be good motivation to get in some time in the pool.

A fairly uneventful weekend for me.  I got in an hour on the bike and 2 miles on the t-mill Saturday morning before work.  After church yesterday, we ate lunch and then camped out on the couch all day watching the two football games (GO COLTS!).  Tonight's workouts look to be a 700m swim and a 5 mile run, plus some weights in between (I AM going to bulk up my muscles, if only a little).

Where is everyone? We started at 6 and now down to 3. Erin's at a conference right? What happened to Jenny and Dave???? Come out come out wherever you are?!?!?!

My daughter and I did some QT at the gym yesterday. (quality time) She and I ran the treadmill and did the weights. I have been wanting to get into the weights and have been too lazy so now she is my excuse for it. I had her film me swimming so I could see my stroke. That should be interesting.

Hope everyone is well in snow land!
