Jetpack,

I was a bit surprised with the initial slow pace, it goes against any principal I can think of to go that slow and still expect results. I was even more surprised when my heart rate was at 149 and yours was 119. I really expected yours to be a little closer to mine, not right by mine but closer. I guess that's where I get frustrated I'm putting in time but not seeing much improvement, I started with just walking in September when I got the inserts for my shoes. This is now entering a dangerious time for me where I usually give up. After all its much easier to sit on the couch and sleep in than to continue to listen to that alarm every morning at 3:45 A.M. It's also very frustrating to know what takes me a week to take off I can very easily put back on in one day. My weight hasen't made that much of an improvement for the amount of time invested. Any way thanks for letting me vent, I think I'm just in some kind of funk and hopefully will be able to pull myself out of it soon and get re-focused.

On the plus side the long distance forcast is showing 50's for next Saturday with rain. If it hits anything above 40 I think that'll call for an outside bike-run brick.

George.

Join the crowd. I just got out of a funk this past week. I wanted to eat everything in the fridge. Wasn't quite that bad but did eat bad this week. I have a problem with eating just to eat and not because I am hungry. Stick with it, nobody said it was going to be easy. I think you can't compair your training and heartrate with Jetpack. I ran just under 4 miles today and my avg. HR was 164 and my high was 172. I can't wlak down the street and have my heart rate low. Keep working at it and even though it is hard to see the results there are there.

I also see the warm weather in the future and that mean running outside.

Weigh in tomorrow morning before my swim. See if I am closer to putting on my new rims.

Just thinking. Anybody else have bike porn they can display besides Jetpack. I will pop my new rims on and try and post some pictures tonight. ANYBODY ELSE game.

Also maybe post your dream bike picture next to you current bike.

Jetpack. What did your old bike look like?

PGilger,

The miles you ran today were almost a full four minutes per mile faster than my run with Jetpack. During our sprint of 9:30 per mile my heart rate went up to 165bpm. Just for comparsion sakes.

My dream bike might be changing after seeing Jetpacks new steed. I tell you that is one sweet bike. I'm currently riding a six year old Iron horse road bike and am holding out for 190 lbs. before I buy a new tri bike.

Here you go. My winter set up. A little area in the basement. Still have my training wheel on the back to use with the roller. Kind of heavy big, 22lbs or so.

Profile clip on aero bars, Profile Design Seat. Simple Sora componets.

So Im here in Vegas.  Get up for some running this morning.   I have been eating junk for the last two days.  Pat - I know what your talking about....trust me!   I still fall victim to eat just to eat.

So I go outside to run because I feel like crap for taking two days off.  Get outside at 7am.  It's 50 degrees.  All I have is my shorts and ciycling jersey to run in.  (A cycling jersey is a great thing to jog in because it has pockets in the back I can carry gel packs, room key, some cash etc...)

Get outside and I head south down the strip from the Monte Carlo.  SUCKED! I was so cold. My hands froze and the cold air in the my lungs gave me a mild asthma attack.  Managed 5 miles in 1:10:00.  I walked a portion of each mile.  Avg HR 125, max 165.  It would sky rocket when I started to jog.

Taking it easy now in the hotel room and I'm going to try again tonight on the hotel treadmill.  But it costs $20 to get into the gym here.  Oh well.  I guess that's what the craps table is for, making $$ right?   Gonna shoot for 8 miles.

Official weigh in this morning. 231.2 pounds. That's down 1 from last week. Started at 239.8 Jan. 1 for a net loss of 8.6 in seven weeks. Frustratingly slow.

Stick with it buddaha. It's a lot easier to put it on than take it off. Try doing weight watchers or something like this. My wife and I do this. It keeps you accountable for what you eat. Helps me seeing it on paper for what you eat for the day.

Went swimming this morning and am feeling more confident with my stroke. Feels good as long I think about it. Otherwise I start to slap the water and not smooth in the water.

Official weight in today 199.

PGilger,

Logging what my weight was starting at the first of the year helped a bit. At least I can look back and see progress, however slow it's still progress. I think I'm finally pulling out of my funk. I projected this slow weight loss and it would still allow me to hit my goals.

Every day I write down what I eat and the calories. I also count calories burned. I figure my ultimate goal is to be 180 so I've hit several websites that determine the needed calories and found for that weight I need 1800 per day. I take my calories in minus what I burn during exercise and try to keep it under 1800 net for the day. This seems to work but it is only going slow. I've resigned my self to slow weight loss and am now finally coming to grips with it.

George.

Ok, the funk is officially over. It's amazing what a run outside can do for you. 45 minute run yesterday at lunch. For the first time in my life I was actually looking forward to the run, never thought I would say something like that but I'm actually starting to enjoy running. Swim scheduled for today at lunch.

Nope, they still go numb at around 30 minutes.

I talked with a couple of runners I work with and one has the same problem when he's on the elipctial. Thinks that maybe if I change up my pace during the run it might help. My plan for tomorrows run which is scheduled for 29 minutes is to rub down the muscles on the sides of my leg with the stick prior to running, then if the numbeness starts to speed up for a short time to see if any of this helps.

I need to get this resolved if I'm ever going to be able to do the run portion of an Ironman.

Ok, anybody want to take a stab at this? If I'm starting from a very low state of fitness how long would it take to get to a high state of fitness?

I will,  the answer is - As long as it takes.

Very zen like answer huh ?   Budda I'll venture to say that first you must define for yourself what a high level of fitness is....for you.  Will you or I ever run a sub 20 min 5k. NEVER!  But alot of people at a high level of fitness do.  THEY MAKE ME SICK

So knowing that, Enjoy the journey the most on the way to your "high level" of fitness.  Most of you all pretty much have seen that I live by "less is more" in training.  One day your going to wake up fit as a fiddle and feel great.  Maybe you already do.  That's great.  And that's the most important thing.  So just know that the things we are doing here, just a couple times a week, there are MILLIONS of people that will never do those things ever in their ENTIRE life.

Don't shoot for a high level of fitness..shoot for a high level of living life.  My fiance asked Mike Ricci (Coach from D3 Multi Sports) in Boulder CO, what he was training for.....without missing a beat he replied, "I'm training for life".  How awesome!

Tyler,

I'll be done with those DVD's in the next day or so. Who's the next on the list? I'll also need an address.

By the way those are very dangerous, every time I watch on I want to go out and run a marathon.

George.

Adamo,

Your next for the dvd's.  Going to PM Budda your address so he can send them to you.

Had a nice swim today. Felt strong with my stroke and felt my form was good. Going to go to spin class in the morning and maybe a quick run. Planning on getting outside for a run this weekend. First outside run in about 3 weeks. Will feel good.

Tyler,

Ok not sub 20 minutes but I would like to think I could get down to the low to mid 20's.

Adamo,

In the spirit of what Tylers doing I've included my copy of Fish Like Freestyle. Tyler, I'll pick this up from you after it makes its way down and you get a chance to watch it, on one of my trips down there.

A couple of things here Tyler -

#1 - I don't prescribe to Max HR % for HRs - per your links. Read this thread:
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25733&start=1

#2 - I have coached a few people from 30 minute 10k to 21-22 minutes - so can someone who runs 25-28 minutes run under 19:xx? Absolutely. Never say never. ;-)

Just my $0.02

Hi Guys,
I'm back from our Colorado ski trip. It was awesome and the sking was really great. It is such a fun workout.
I am battling some chest congestion and haven't been able to work out the last couple of days. I am going to hop on the treadmill today and at least get a walk in.

Sounds like everyone is doing great, keep up the good work.

Buddah, any luck with adjusting your stride? Have you considered a gait analysis? I'm not sure that it would help, but it might be worth checking into.

Yesterdays run I stretched the daylights out of my legs before I ran. I left the shoes very, very loose and towards the end of the run I started feeling something in one of the toes on my right foot. This was only a 30 minute run, tomorrow I have a 40 minute run scheduled so that one will really show if this will work or not.

I did find something on the internet about compartmentalization in the lower leg causing something like this but the cure is surgery with an 8 - 10 week recovery. I don't think I really want to go that route.
