Emerson, Glad your son in law is ok. That does look like a nasty fire.

By the way, I'm glad I have you guys around to keep me moving as well. When I was in full training mode, I was able to stay motivated and even keep a good eye on my eating. I'm eating whatever I want right now which may not be a great thing.  It may be boredom as much as anything else.  I really want/need to be working out.  I ran out of time yesterday but I had been planning on a long, slow trainer ride. Didn't have but 45 minutes so I went 180 degrees and did sprints instead.  Not really what I'm supposed to be doing, but it feel good anyway.

Wow Emerson,

What the heck happen - by the looks of things...it looks as though your son-n law is very lucky to get out alive. AND - As if you needed anything more to deal with! Your positive mindset is amazing!

If you are looking for a REALLY safe car...we recently bought our daughter a new jetta...has won all kinds of safety awards from the automobile assoc. Has front/side airbags. We actually surprised her with it on Christmas 2005 and she LOVES IT! sounds like she is about the same age as my daughter....right now they have 0 down and $199 monthly payments - VERY VERY SAFE CARS - which makes me worry alot less when she is trapesing about the country.

Hope your Wednesday is a good one...

Take care - Julie

Hi Mike,

My brother Mike is racing in this years Escape to Alcatraz race. It sounds really REALLY challenging and - your right  - they say the current is crazy and you also have the possiblity of running into a two-ton sea lion on your swim portion. This years race has already begun the lottery process - they just picked the first lottery groups names and will pick another group in February.  I myself will have to wait a few years before trying to tackle a race of this distance. Hope you are having a great day. Let me know what your plans are and if you do decide to participate in this race or any other race around SF bay area and I will come and cheer you on!

Julie

Hi Amy,

I too am a cookie monster, (I LOVE COOKIES) and last night I had a office party to attend and as I arrived - I had to keep saying to myself...YOU WILL NOT DRINK MARGARITAS...YOU WILL NOT DRINK MARGARITAS....YOU WILL NOT DRINK MARGARITAS...and guess what I DID NOT drink Margaritas. Not because I was disciplined and well behaved but...because this year they had only beer and wine! I had a few glasses of red wine and was able to avoid the food tables for the first time in 10+ years of attending this party. Mny people at the party _ I only see a lot of these people annually at this party and I would say that 80% made some type of comment about how much thinner I looked....That was just what I needed to hear to stay away from those tastly lil appetizers that were being passed out by those servers who seemed to come around every two seconds....JUST WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR! - I hope that my weight has dropped another 20+lbs....so, stay away from those cookies. You can do it! or just have one and then run away! ;o)

  • ... My daughters "totally safe"land rover turned out to be not so safe. My son-in-law was able to jump out before it exploded.

  • ...Reading about the swim strokes was very helpful, I am at the "feeling totally clutzy in the water" phase. When I get to AZ I will exparement with breathing on different sides. It makes good sense.

  • ...If anyone has questions about running, go ahead and ask.

  • OMG! What a scary picture! I'm so glad he's ok.

Swim technique - I'm not an expert. I just like to swim. If you want some GREAT advice, read Cat (Kaqphin)'s or Yanti (TriAya)'s mentor threads. There's a LOT of fantastic swim advice on those two threads. (They told me it was ok to lurk. LOL)

Running technique. Ooooh yeah. I could use this. I'm a complete running newbie... Last month, I mentioned that my knee and ankle hurt whenever I run. Atlantia suggested barefoot running. I did some (on the treadmill), and it really changed my stride.

In the 28 years since I left school no one has ever asked how I did there -- it only seemed to matter that I got out in one piece.

    So.

How DID you do in school?

    (I couldn't resist. LOL)

Thank you for those kind, wise words...today is exactly 5 months till I graduate and I couldn't be happier. Now I just need to destress from a long semester and take a few weeks off before it starts again.

I think this is actually how many college students feel in December... They've worked hard during the semester, and when it's over, they're tired both physically and mentally.

Enjoy your break. Get some sleep. Work out. (You knew I was gonna suggest that, right?) See your friends and family.

If, after a few days, you aren't feeling "perkier," definitely check back in with us.

Why, why, why, was I not surprised to find that our beautiful thread had been tainted by the glitter? It's like the bird flu.....it infects every blog it touches

And me, padding my posting count? Oh no, my little mentees or mentos or something like that....

    Eric,

    Welcome to the Dark Side.

    Or.... Perhaps I should say:

Dee, you are too funny!  I laughed out loud when I read your question;  I could not remember.  28 years is a long time...  I did well enough in highshool to get in and well enough in college to get out.  I try to be efficient.

Efficiency is good. (Think of all those college students who are on the "6 year plan.")

I agree - 28 years is a long time to remember. Heck, I barely remember.... Wait, what was I going to say? :-/

There were no six year plans with our kids.  It was four and then on your own.

I finely put some of my running into the logs just to get going.  I will start with detail tomorrow.  Only 66 miles so far this month, to much, travel, weather, etc.  I am going to have to kick butt to have the time I wish for the lost dutchman...

Man, I'm off the grid for two days and I'm 3 pages down on posts. First off, Welcome Emerson!!! Glad you are part of the group!!! I hope everyone has had a good week so far!! I've been stuck at work for the past twp days. Just home enought to cath some ZZZZZssss. Off tonight and then back tomorrow and Friday. Then I'm off till Christmas night.
So my plan is to get new running shoes on Saturday. I figured I'd start out with a new pair. I was using(or not using that's why I'm 244) Brooks Beasts. There's a RoadRunner Sports store in the next town and they will fit me and they watch how you run etc!! Anyone have any info on shoes to avoid? This is not my area of expertise so please any help would be appreciated.
Glad to see you are all keeping up the posts!!! Chris

    Hey everyone,

I disappear to pack for a day and get some shopping done...and wow...the posts fly up.  I'm going home tomorrow for Christmas...hoping to get some solid training done while I am there which includes finding a pool to swim in.  Thanks for all the words of wisdom over the past few days.  It is hard finding balance when college is screaming in your ear one thing and reality and who I am is having a hard time getting above that.  The training is helping keeping me grounded

    Have a good night!

What about Snickerdoodles!!! Love those!!!! Not on the diet though. How many are going to try and be good through the holidays. I'm working most of it and we get all kinds of awesome stuff...no no crap, it's all crap, bad stuff!!!... in the ER over Christmas. You would think that we would all eat better, but caffeine and sugar can get you through the shift. It's the crash when you get home that's ugly.

Every time I've worked for the last two weeks, I've come home and my wife has tried some new Christmas cookie recipe. The ones that I've been hooked on are chocolate with the andes mint chips on top.....very addictive!

Dee, I'll never catch up to you if you keep doing 5 posts in a row like that.  You can make one post with multiple paragraphs, you know??

    1) Junk food rocks. Especially junk food containing chocolate.

    2) Multiple paragraphs? Hm. There IS a reason my post count is so high, you know.... Actually, I tend to read a post and reply to it. It's, um.... faster that way.

    3) Look! I've gotten THREE different thoughts into ONE post. (And I won't even post any GLITTER in this.... LOL)

    I like the glitter.

I'm going shopping today with my son so I will try to run when I get home, oh yea, we are going to the movies tonight as a family to see I am Legend with Will Smith. I'm debating on having popcorn or not, I don't go to the movies but twice a year and buttered popcorn is my favorite, and don't say have the popcorn without the butter cause it won't happen But I'm kinda in a pickle because me and the hubby decided last Friday we would see who could lose the most weight by next Friday which is tomorrow, and we haven't been allowed to weigh ourselves to see our progress, so do I want to risk the popcorn???hmmm

Everyone have a great day today and remember to be at my house Sat. at 12:00 noon for the cookie bake, we are making 7 different kinds. Am I a "glutten" (pun intended) for punishment?

I can't wait until Jan 1 to get through the torture...

I'm not the best one to talk you out of the popcorn.  One of my biggest limiters right now is nutrition.  I dropped about 7% bodyfat in 9 mos of training but I could stand to drop another 10lbs or so. BUT--to do that, I have to really change my eating habits. So far, I haven't been willing to do that. I mean, I've made changes like cutting back (not out) soda, thinking before  I snack, and trying to choose healthier alternatives.  I also feel like I deserve a little reward from time to time so if that Wendy's frosty is calling me, I let myself give in.  Particularly during my big months where I've had 400+miles on the bike, 75 miles or so running and 20,000 yds in the pool, I let myself splurge some.  I think it's good to do that so that you don't completely blow your diet in a binge.  A little treat here and there helps satisfy those cravings.

I'm with you Eric, I used to be 45 lbs heavier and have kept it off for 3 years, I have the 7lbs that likes to creep up, but I usually catch it before it's a bigger problem. I would definately have the popcorn if I didn't have that "darn" weigh in tomorrow against husband....hmmm

    Have a great day everyone!!!!!

You guys are way too funny.  Trying to keep on a training and nutrition schedule during the holidays is worse than an uphill marathon.  We are in Cincinnati for 12 days and we are scheduled out to dinner for all 12 of them... There are bowls of goodies everywhere...  The gray, overcast cold blowing outdoors just calls to me...

I think if any of us can keep from flopping we deserve a medal!  I will not get on the scale.

Well enough about our temptation.  I took me over two years to get these 35 pounds off and I am not going to get them back -- well, maybe a few.  So I am taking off from work early today to do a quick 7 mile loop before putting the suit and tie back on for another dinner.   I hope to get in 10 - 15 on Saturday and get back on track.

Safe travels to everyone who is traveling over the next couple of days.  Thanks to everyone for sharing your days.  It makes mine to read all about them.

I have to say it is a HUGE bummer when the hubby takes the kiddos Christmas shopping with him. I am home alone. The perfect time to go for a nice run. No worries, no one to hurry home and see. And I am sick. This sucks. I am not one to suck it up and get out there no matter what. If I am sick I need to get better asap to take care of the kiddos. So, here I sit. Staying inside, feeling like I should be running, but my body is telling me "h@ll no!" Maybe I will feel better tomorrow and I will get in a naptime treadmill run.

Oh, yeah, I have eight dozen cookies in the freezer from a cookie exchange last week. Talk about temptation. My fav's are the Hershey Kiss cookies.

Keep up the good work everyone. I hope to be back out there tomorrow.

ps I know which SUV I will not be purchasing next
