Well. tomorrow I will have to try to stay in that 80-95 (keep in mind that my bike computer isn't in yet- and then I have to get someone to hook it up for me).

I'm doing the trainer thing too, and my bike computer doesn't compute cadence.  After talking to a bike friend at work today, I'm going to practice using a metronome to figure out how fast my cadence is.

If I like it, I will maybe get down with a Garmin as time goes on. If I don't, I know I don't need a Garmin.

I splurged and got the Garmin last month and I am loving it!!!  Other than the heart rate function, which is keeping me honest and slow during my runs, I am loving the workout function.  It allows me to set run and rest periods of any length I want.  I got mine through costco.com, but right now they only have the 205 wrist model and the 305 bicycle model.  (I got the 305 wrist model).

Anyway, enjoy your new "toys"!  They do make training fun, don't they.

Yee-haw!  Figured out how to attach a picture to my link.  Also did a couple of pix in an album, but now they're a little large.  Will fix later -- have to go work on 1099s.

I forced myself to run a little over 5K. Took awhile, and it was rather disgusting in a lung-clearing kind of way, but I made it. Now if I can get my right ear unplugged I'll be almost normal! This month has SUCKED so bad.

Sorry to be negativity incarnate, but man -- shiyotty health is a real buzz-kill.

I'm feeling better today, but I had to skip yesterday’s spinning/ride. I wasn’t on top and today the weather is not for anything outside, heavy wind and lots of rain. So I have to do some time on the trainer tonight.

I hope to fulfill my monthly winter goal, for the first time this winter.

I don't have a cadence feature on my garmin, just count for 10 seconds and multiple by 6. If you don't like math, remember that 15 strokes of one leg (I count at the bottom) in 10 seconds is 90 rpm. I try to hit 15.

So, with that information, I'm trying to use the trainer. As I said in my blog, I'm using a much easier gear than on the road with the same effort, like 4 gears difference. I figure that when I get on the road I'll be able to hold a high cadence in a tougher gear if I work on it now. That's assuming there is nothing wrong with the way I set up the trainer (it just should be this hard to pedal!). So this morning I started doing a 30 minute high cadence spin in a harder gear, I did it for as long as I could and then switched to one I could finish in. I'm hoping that I'l extend the time and graduate through the gears this way, but I suspect it takes time.

ROTFLMAO!!!  That's funny....  Maybe I should order one as a back up.

The massage was painful but hurt good if you know what I mean.  It was a deep tissue.  I never get the swedish as I am always in knots and need something worked out.  This morning the muscles all feel good but it hurts to touch my leg.  I'm in shock that it's not blue from being bruised.  I guess it's probably too early and could still show up.

Today was suppose to be a bike but since it's 45 degrees today and tomorrow is suppose to be 70 I think I'm going to move it to tomorrow which was a rest day anyway.

TGIF!!!!!

It's supposed to be 56 in Denver on Sunday and I think all their snow is melted. So I think I'll drive down and get a real bike ride in finally. It's been a while.

If skiing counts as tri training, I'm ahead of the game. It's all anyone in this house wants to do every weekend!

I think I recognize that path

As for the skiing counting as tri training, check out Birkierunner.  I think it counts for him.

Skiing should absolutely count.  That's hard work.  It should at least count for cross training.  Ok, hard work for me.  Everything on my body usually hurts after the first day of skiing...even my hair and nails. LOL

Hope everyone has a great weekend.  My chores and bike are done.

Got outside for a ride today.  That may make it easier to get on the trainer now.  I am riding to make the outdoors easier, not just to put time in, work off lunch or just getting a workout in

I just came back from japanese AGAIN- this time with my kids. Ended up buying a Blackberry after dinner. Not sure if I like this Blackberry Pearl- buttons are soooooo tiny.  I have 30 days to decide if I like it...anybody have one?

Also bought a "Stick" for rolling on sore muscles- it is AWESOME! Run, don't walk, to get one. Thanks for the tip, Mimi!

Figured out the Nike + iPod- it's pretty cool for $29!  I liked being able to see my pace as I was running.  Ground was snowy and a little mushy- it's hard to run in that....like sand! I really need to take a day off-- haven't had one since 1/17- but I know I have to leave for work way early on Monday so that will have to be it. Gonna ski in the am with the fam and then ditch them at the mountain at noon and come  back to town and swim.

you are going to become fast friends with your stick!!  I use it even when I'm not "training", just cause.  Have a great day skiing...bet you have some lovely quads!

Help with Heart Rate Training info, please........

Okay, so my Maffetone numbers show my aerobic threshold at 139bpm. My zones are as follows:

Z1: 91-114 Recovery
Z2: 115-124 Extensive Endurance
Z3: 124-130 Intensive Endurance
Z4: 131-138 Sub-threshold
Z5a: 139-142 Super Threshold
Z5b: 143-146 Anaerobic Endurance
Z5c: 147-152 Power

Not sure what above 152 should be -- my max HR is around 175 for my age.......so between 152 and 175?? No clue.

I also have no clue how to use these zones. I have a Garmin which I could set to these zones, but some are sooooooo narrow....like, how does one stay in Z5a when the low and hi ends are only separated by 3 beats??

Can anyone help me udnerstand how to use these zones for progressive training (still base-building right now). Should I be using a simpl;er, more basic zone structure for the time being?

Thanks for any help!

Bob

Bob...this is for the bike, I"m guessing?  If your max is 175, your zones are not correct.  Here's my zones for the bike:

Zone 1105 - 133
Zone 2133 - 143
Zone 3144 - 150
Zone 4151 - 160
Zone 5a161 - 164
Zone 5b165 - 170
Zone 5c171 - 176

I found these by doing a lactate threshold test.  My max is 176, my LT is 161.   Here's a link to a page on my coach's website regarding zones:  http://www.fit2tri.com/articles/article/786543/6807.htm.

And yes, the ranges do seem very small...the more you practice, the better you'll get at staying in the prescribed range.  ...Also, if you have a few hours, check out this discussion on the forum:  http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25733&start=1  I bumped it to the top so it would be easy to find!  It should give you way more info than you ever wanted to know about zones

Skiing gets very easy physically when you do it a lot. I'd say two hours of skiing for me is about like doing a few hundred deep knee bends. It also works the core hard. I think it acts as strength training that translates to the bike pretty well.

If you don't ski a lot, there's really nothing you can do to train for it. You're going to be sore to your fingernails just because the movement is so different (and violent) compared to anything you've done.
