I am headed off to the beautiful mountains of NC. A very good chance there will be no regimented workouts, but there should be a little bit of hiking and skiing to make up for it. Hopefully will not over do it on the food and everything will turn out ok.

Everyone have a great weekend.

I can't believe it, but I'm still enjoying working out, I just wish my first tri would hurry up and get here.

I'm ready to send my kids to North Carolina. They're out of school today and Monday. I'm going to go crazy.

Page 2?

Just jumping in. Training is going great for me. Have been futsy on nutrition and could barely slog through a measly 4 mile run this morning. I loaded up on Thai tonight and tomorrow have my last big long run before my half marathon. I can't wait until that race is over so I can focus on my April tri. And I've decided on doing a spring instead of olympic.

Noticeable improvements on the bike and have finally gotten my groove back in the water.

How is everyone doing?

A word about nutrition. If you are trying to lose weight based on calorie deficits, shoot for no more than 500 less per day.

If you aren't trying to lose weight, just maintain, make sure you are eating enough. I ran into this problem last summer during Ironman training. I was starving all the time and energy stores were low. I started eating more (a lot more!) and things turned around for me.

This is a pretty good calculator for figuring out how much you should eat per day. It estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), and it mutilplies it by an activity factor based on how much you are working out. So you can basically take your number and keep it the same if you are maintaining or subtract up to 500 if you are trying to lose.

Based on what it figured for me, I need to be eating no less than 2600 calories per day to maintain. That's a lot for this guy, but I can tell that I have more energy when I hit that number.

Not that I have that dialed in, I'm using the BT nutrition logging to watch what percentage of calories I'm getting from carbs, protein, and fat. Trying to reduce the amount from fat and get more from protein.

So, it's Monday again. Had a pretty rough weekend visiting my wife's terminally ill (pancreatic cancer) grandfather. He probably has about a week left. It was tough being there, but it was good for closure.

Trying to get back to business now. 90 minute run on Wednesday. Slowly upping my volume. Slow and steady.

Here's something fun. Had an idea when I was looking at Josh's log. Everyone post a pic of themself (race or non-race) so we have an idea with whom we are talking. Here's one of me and my wife after my IM.

Alright, I am back from a long weekend of fried food and cold weather. I did what I could to stay active, but am now ready to jump back into training, although, running might have to wait a bit since I can barely walk after my skiing adventure. I will try to get a picture when I get home, but I don't have any action shots, I don't think I have done anything active for many years prior to this. Hope everyone is having a good week.

Heh, it's been 6 years since we last went skiing. It's a soreness that is only exceeded by a half marathon or longer race.

Here is the little guy and myself, next picture will hopefully include a triathlon or 5k, I am thinking about doing one of those to get a measurement of my speed, or lack there of.

NINO is BACK. And it is good to be back. The last 3 weeks have been CRAZY and much more out of control than I expected. I did get in a few workouts and although they were not many and I did not EVEN have a chance to log them on BT they were suprisingly productive. I am wondering if a bit of time off here and there helped some.

Well I do not want to boar you all with my tales of travel, tribulations, work sucks stories and other things. Just know that I am back and will be back to posting daily and will work to catch up on what has been going on. I am sorry that I did not even get a chance to let you know I would be gone but trust me it was ridiculous.

I am off to get my run in and will be back later tonight to catch up, log my run and continue like I never left.

This time of year, I would say you would have an easier time finding a 5K.

Welcome back Nino!!!  It gets hard when life gets in the way, but the key is to keep at it.  Keep working hard and you will see the benefits.

Your job probably has somewhat of an inconsistent schedule with traveling and such, but make sure that you are flexible with your workouts.  Even if you cant get all of them in, thats ok, just try to do a little something everyday and you will lose weight and improve your health.  Whether its taking a walk or stretching or taking the stairs an extra few times, each thing you do will help.    Again welcome back and good luck.

Josh

Alright, here is a fun question for you guys. I don't know why this came about, increased distance, different tempature, running style, who knows? but my legs starting rubbing together something aweful and I must say it does not feel good after either. I was wondering if there are any quick fixes to this, different dress, or maybe just some powder, any help would be great. I'm finally starting to enjoy running and I don't want anything to blow it.

I would first try some body glide.   You can find it most running and biking stores, maybe even at Dicks or REI.    I had some issues before i lost some weight.  It also may be wearing when running..   Not that i really want to know what type of underwear you wear, but if you wear boxers or boxer briefs with your gym shorts you may see some chafing issues.   You may want to try running specific shorts that have a brief built into them.  Asic and Pearl Izumi make some good shorts like that.    You could also try wearing tri shorts.  Those would help because no skin would be rubbing together, just spandex on spandex...   Just a thought.     Hope that helps

 Josh

Charleston,

Though your name obviously tells me where you are from, I didnt really catch on until i looked at your logs and saw that you are going to do the Charleston sprint tri series.   My father in law's business owns a beach house on Edisto Island and I pretty familiar with the Charleston/ Low Country Area.   Our family basically goes there every summer.   I dont know if we will make it down there this year because we have alot going on but last year my father in law I did one of the Charleston Sprint Tri series races.   It was pretty fun, though i didnt place well in my age group.

Are you a member of the Charleston Triathlon Club?  You should look into it if you are not.  I dont know much about them, but i would recommend a checking them out and see what kind of things they offer, ie group training sessions, discounts at local stores, and other stuff.

Talk to you later

Josh

Thanks for the help josh,

I actually just joined the charleston tri club, their first meeting is in a week or so and includes an oyster roast so I am pretty excited. I do wish the charleston series was a little sooner so I could do a short tri for my first, I am a little nervous about a 5 mile run for my first tri, since I have yet to run five miles on my own yet.

I use GLIDE - it looks like a deoderant stick. You can buy it at any running store and I have found it to be great - no rubbing or chafing.

The jump from 3 miles to 5 miles came pretty quickly to me. I started just doing 5ks and then stepped up to a 10k and was really nervous too. Just take it slow - I found it great to try to add a quarter mile onto each Sunday long run. Now I am up to 10-12miles on Sundays when 6 months ago all I could think about doing was struggling through 5ks. You can do it!

Another vote for Body Glide. Just a few swipes of it and you should be ok. May want to try some compression shorts under your running shorts as well.

Going from 3 to 5 in a race shouldn't be too bad. For my first half marathon, my longest run was 10 miles. For marathons, most folks say you shouldn't go longer than 20 miles. Adrenaline will kick in at some point and you should be able to finish without too much of a problem. Go for it!
