As a beginner and training for my first olympic in 3 months, I never factored in getting sick! I've been trying to get in some training since last Thursday (when I realized I was coming down with something) but it hasn't been going so great. So,what is the best course of action? What do you do about missed training? Do you pick up where you left off or just jump back in? Hi Heather! Great to hear from you. My advice is to not even worry about the training you've missed due to sickness. Its still very early in the year. I would simply ease back into training over a week period or so. Don't try to make up for missed workouts. When you feel you are 100% back to normal you can resume your normal training plan. You won't gain anything by rushing into things too quickly. Keep in touch! Edited by Birkierunner 2008-01-29 10:29 PM |

Make sure that you are well before training too hard, otherwise you may get sick again. I hope that you are back at 100% soon. |

Veteran 144 Vienna, Austria (temporarily) | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Just wondering if other people use recovery drinks. I tend to only use them if I do a long workout, generally longer than 1.5 to 2 hours. Do you use a recovery drink? And if so, do you use it after all your workouts? |

Extreme Veteran 459 | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Hi there, I'd like to join! TriAya sent me here, hope its okay. I just turned 41 and am about to begin a 2nd season of tri-ing. My big race this year is Vineman in July. I've 3 sprints and an Olympic and 4 marathons in there too this past year. I am extremely single. I have a 12 year old daughter. I have a little doggie and two cats. Currently, I am trying to get the plan going and doing some sort of work out every day except Mondays and Fridays. My weakest slowest scariest link is the bike. What else? I apologize for not reading the entire thread at this very moment - I plan to later this evening. I have a 12 year old that needs homework help! Thanks! |

You're welcome into the group, but just be sure to read my opening post describing my mentor style and if you still want in - your IN! Vineman is on my "some day I'm racing there" list. What plan are you thinking of using for your upcoming season? What exactly is it about the bike leg that is giving you problems? What type of bike do you have? Feel free to ask any questions. WELCOME! |

Well Tammy, just don't do what I did! Check in my log, I've posted my pace & HR profile from Disney. I ran it around 5-10 beats below my LTHR of 178-ish. I recall looking at my pace on my Polar watch in the first 10k thinking "this pace is just stupid! I'm going way too fast and hard." Because I wasn't acclimated to the warm/humid conditions and I wasn't able to get in a warm-up, I should have started out easier and build into the run. Edited by stinkyhelmet 2008-01-30 8:53 PM |

I tend to only use them if I do a long workout, generally longer than 1.5 to 2 hours. Do you use a recovery drink? And if so, do you use it after all your workouts? I use Endurox R4 mainly for long (3+ hrs) or very hard sessions (1.5+ hrs). I started using it long ago when I used to race mtn bikes, all my buddies used it. I like the taste, but I also use other stuff (clif bar, yogurt, choco milk, etc) as alternatives to mix things up. The important part for me is to get the 4:1 carb-protein ratio, and replenish the depleted glycogen within 30 mins after these long or hard workouts. I really liked R4 for the convenience factor. I usually can get water easily, so all I needed was a baggie of it after races or workouts. Edited by stinkyhelmet 2008-01-30 9:23 PM |

Veteran 244 South Carolina | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Hi! So this group is still accepting folks? This is my second season. I'm a 48 year old mother of 5 grown kids (glad to see tripletmom in the group). I couldn't run around the block in January 2007. I lost (and kept off) 22 pounds last year. Still could stand to lose 10 more. I'm using Weight Watchers. Last year's races: Charleston Cooper River Bridge 10K, Nashville Country Music Half Marathon, Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series (2 races), Mini-Musselman (sprint), SC Half Iron Distance, Savannah Sprint (age group winner), Kiawah Half Marathon. Was scheduled for my first marathon in February, but was laid up with cervical disk bone spurs in December/January. I've been gradually building back up to doing some light running, spinning/cycling, swimming. Today the specialist cleared me for all activities! Which is great, because I'm registered for Ironman Florida in November! I'm WAY SLOW in all three disciplines, but what I lack in speed I make up in spirit!! Limiters: Bike endurance, swim technique. Working now on Total Immersion drills through book/DVD. I have an informal coach and a great group I practice with. I like BT because I can ask questions when there's no one physically around to give me answers! And I always have lots of questions! |

Master 1671 West Bend, WI | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps The MAIN goal of my marathon is to go into IM with the "been there, done that" attitude about the run... I know they will be two completetly different runs but I need to know I can do it. BUT... my training for the marathon has gone well and I am pretty sure I can do a sub 4. BQ for me is 3:45- which would be awesome- but not really my intention (well not this time ) but it will be in the back of my brain if things are going well. The course IS very hilly so that may make a difference too?

I don't have any HR data from any of my stand alone marathons. I haven't used HR to dictate my marathon strategy. Before going into a race I know what finish time I'm capable of and race solely on min/mile pace. Sorry I don't have any data for 'ya |

Master 1671 West Bend, WI | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Well I dont usually WEAR a HRM anyway...it always falls off (but thats another story) but I kind of know what pace I am in at certain HRs...you know. Just not really sure what pace I will be able to sustain...all of my long runs have been on tired legs. I have 30 days to figure it out |

Pro 4675 Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps What's your most recent 10k or 15k, or half race time where you felt like you had a decent race? I'm getting ready for a run, so don't have time to look thru your race reports. From those, I can use Daniels' tables to give you a guestimate time to shoot for - beats guessing...I guess. |

Master 1671 West Bend, WI | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps You actually figured that our for me, I think before this group started, and said I could do like a 3:36 an 8:15 pace...which is probaly not in my capabilities..although it sounds damn nice. I ran 9 at a 8:20 pace on Saturday and dont think I could do that for another 17 miles. No biggie- Im just strategizing my race- um my run. Its kind of a big deal for me and will take any advice into consideration |
