As of today, I accomplished my goal for the month of 10 hours! I am going to push to see how much more biking I can get in this month before I move on March's challenge. Hope everybody is doing well.

i entered the NYC lottery today.... I entered last year (1st time) didn't get in.  If you sign up and don't get in for 3 years you are guaranteed a spot in the 4th year.

Good luck getting picked this year. I tried looking up the race, but I'm not sure I found it. I found something in NYC that was an Olympic. Anyway, I hope you are chosen for this year! How long do you have to wait before you hear? Keep us posted!!!

That would be really cool to be picked for that. Good luck! For the swim challenge, should we focus on distance instead of time? I was just thinking that if we focused on time, my numbers would be artificially inflated since I will probably have to stop and rest after each couple of laps. I am open to whatever the group decides, however.

I'll go for 5 hours of swim if that's the route we go.  If it's yardage, that's going to require math.

BTW, sorry for the absence.  It's been a crazy couple of weeks.  I get to come up for air on Saturday.

i like doing the yardage or meters thing for swimming too.  but if someone swims by time that's ok... the goal thing is just for the person, so it really doesn't matter if you choose yards or time.. whatever works for you...

my swim goal is 17000 yards

i will keep you guys posted about NYC marathon, they pick in June (i think)

My goal for the swim is 15,000 yards (13,716 meters). The pool at the gym is a yard pool, but in my log I convert it to meters. That's the only reason I put both yards and meters.

I'm not sure how far is reasonable for me right now since I haven't been in the pool for a while. I am going to shoot for 15,000 meters. Hope everyone is doing well and that all of you have a great weekend!

It's been a hard, stressful, crazy, draining, busyw and I could think of a lot more colorful words to describe the past few weeks!

Failed miserably on the Bike Challenge!

I will shoot for 8,800 yards for March ... gets me in the pool 5 times next month, and unfortunately that's all the time I might have ... but hopefully not!

I have had a bad training month. I am going to get back o ntrack here in March. Work seems to have settled down a bit.

As for the swim challenge. I will go with 11,000 yards or 5 hours.

I was going to get 2 good swim workouts in this weekend but the pool was being monopolized by a high school swim meet. I am going to push for 3 swims during the week this week. We'll see how I do. Good luck to everyone on the swim challenge.

Yeah, my coach and I have differing opinions for my March focus.  I'm going to have to rework my goal or come up miserably short.  DOH!

Uh . . . swimming is hard. I finally made it into the pool to find myself struggling to maintain my stroke. I had to shift from freestyle to breaststroke or sidestroke several times. If anyone is able to answer the following questions, I would be in your debt:
1) How often should you breathe? I find myself breathing once every time my right arm comes out of the water. Is this OK?
2) How far should you turn your head when you breathe? Sometimes I rotate my head all the way until I am facing the ceiling and I think this is too far. But I don't know how far is too far.
3) How do I solve the problem of needing to breathe more often than my stroke cadence permits? I find myself needing to breathe when my head is underwater which causes me to switch strokes so that I can breathe easier. Is there a solution?
4) Is freestyle the only stroke done in triathlon or can I do breaststroke with which I am more comfortable?

I thank anyone who would like to take a crack at these questions. I hope everyone is having a great week. Keep an eye on Ohio tonight as we will be deciding your fates!

Josh,
I'm probably not the best one to answer your swim questions, but what I can say is keep at it. The more you get in the pool the better you'll feel. I remember when I got in the pool for the first time a while back I couldn't go to the end of the pool without feeling like I was going to die. I just couldn't catch my breath. I read the Total Immersion (TI) book and followed the drills. It has helped me so much. I also breathe on my right side every time....just like you decribed.

As far as your breathing question, I don't know the correct answer. However, I think if your face is towards the ceiling it is too far though. If I breathe on my right side, the left side goggle just comes out of the water. Not sure if that makes sense.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with better answers for you. Just keep at it and I promise you it will get better.

I breathe every 3 strokes so I don't become dependent on breathing on one particular side.  It helps when racing in case the water current is choppy.

2) How far should you turn your head when you breathe? Sometimes I rotate my head all the way until I am facing the ceiling and I think this is too far. But I don't know how far is too far.

One goggle out of the water according to my coach.  I have a really hard time with this one.

3) How do I solve the problem of needing to breathe more often than my stroke cadence permits? I find myself needing to breathe when my head is underwater which causes me to switch strokes so that I can breathe easier. Is there a solution?

This is part of swim fitness and the more you're in the water, the easier it'll become.  When I first started, I was winded after 50m and had to rest for a minute or two.  Keep at it, iIt does come around pretty quickly.

4) Is freestyle the only stroke done in triathlon or can I do breaststroke with which I am more comfortable?

Freestyle or crawl is pretty much the race standard but you can do anything you like.  The problem you'll run into is hitting/kicking those around you when you do a different stroke. It's mass chaos during wave starts ... something I'm still not comfortable with.  I head off to the side and usually do better there than duking it out in the middle with the masses.

I thank anyone who would like to take a crack at these questions. I hope everyone is having a great week. Keep an eye on Ohio tonight as we will be deciding your fates!

Just my 2 cents.  Hope this helps!

Jessica

Jessica,

I've heard alot of people suggest breathing every 3 strokes. I haven't been able to do that yet. If the water is choppy, do you adjust your stroke to breathe only the the opposite side of the chop? OR do you continue to breathe every 3 strokes. Since swimming is still very new to me, I thought I would try to get through my May race and then maybe look at different options.

I have also heard about having one goggle out of the water when breathing. I have a hard time with that too!!!

If there's a chop to the water, I generally will breathe off to the not choppy side but it is really nice to have the flexibility.  Sometimes the throngs swimming create a big enough chop to impact your ability to breathe.  Nothing worse than sucking back some cold lake water!  My learning curve came from the stir the old gals in the pool created during their Rusty Hinges class at the Y.

Thanks a lot everybody for your conscientious answers. I am going to do another swim today and I will be working on improving my technique based on the advice given. Swimming is definitely my weakest of the three disciplines but I am hoping to improve substantially over the course of our challenge this month. Thanks again and have a great day!
