So I'm trying to figure something out, during the swim portion of the races do I need to swim it freestyle or can I swim any style? Is there swim etiquette for the races?

Shawn

From what people've told me, anything goes but most people do freestyle (front crawl). I expect that if I get tired or freaked out, I'll do what ever makes me feel comfortable (side stroke, breast stroke etc).

canadarn2001 - sorry, been offline for a week.
I have been in the pool for 4 weeks now, pretty steady 3 days a week- if my skin can take it.
I feel much more comfortable now, but I know I still have a long way to go.
MY Tri is June 29, so my 20 week plan starts this Sunday... The weather here in Upstate NY has been terrible, so my running has consisted of treadmill and the occasional dog walk/run.... until we hit the icy patches.

What Tri are you thinking of doing? Where in CA are you from? I live up near the border of Ontario (Buffalo, NY area)

I am going to start my program this Sunday..... wish me luck!

Amy welcome to the group. And best of luck with your training and everything.I started the 20 week program 3 weeks ago. Been going fairly strong so far I think. What part of Buffalo, I grew up up there.

xquerillax,
lived in South Buffalo near Caz park for awhile, and then moved south to Springville. I am in Brockport now. I have been trying to get some quality double workouts in for the past month, but Sunday will be offically 20 weeks away. There are two co-workers doing the 1/2 iron as well, so at least I'll have company in my misery.

Haven't posted since joining the group. Have signed up for a local series here in MA and really enjoying the training. Did a brick on Sunday (800m swim and 5 mile run). Really had a blast. It snowed the first few minutes of the run.

Any recommendations for affordable entry level wetsuits?

Group still open? I am a 50 yr old returning triathlete - used to race in the 80's. raced 3 times last year and finished 2nd in Clydesdale in the Vancouver (wa) All-American tri.

I have a strong biking background and decent swim times. Working hard on enjoying the run,

Am currently training about 6 - 10 hours a week and plan on 1 sprint, 3-4 Olympic and 1 HIM this year. Future includes an IM in the next year or so.

Have lost 20 pounds since last season and hope to get out of Clydes and into age group.

Hey Mike,

Just checking in. I have not logged for the past 2 week getting over some surgery. No big deal a tumor cut out of my neck so the running and biking will be fine. I hope Doc lets me back on the road on the 22nd? swim on 26th?

Any advice to getting back on track? I was well into the 20 week HIM and had to stop cold for the past two weeks. I could p/u where I left off and just finish what I can? Plan to start the 20 wk IM April 1st?

Current Race Plans: 5K march 1; 10K march 15; 10 mile; march 29; Marathon April 29th; HIM June; IM Lou August.

Hello! My name is Phil Zlomke and I would love to have someone mentor me in becoming a triathlete. I am a complete noob and I found that the (sprint) triathlon looks like a very appropriate goal. My sister and dad did one last year and I basically would love to join them this year.

As for me, I am 25 and overweight (5' 7" & 215lbs). I'm a family man, a student, and a Youth minister. I have a wife of 5 years and two beautiful daughters (3 & 4 months). I am a student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney pursuing a degree in Middle Grades Education (Mathematics and Physical Education). And I get to play with students on the weekends for my so-called job. Like many, I made a new years resolution, yet for once I have stuck to it. I have been weight training for the last 7 weeks with cardio and have successfully lost a handful of pounds (could have lost more if I could get the whole eating thing consistent). My weight loss goal is 180 for the sprint at the end of July.

My biggest accomplishment in the "physical" realm would have to be an "almost" inline marathon. My wife and I went bike-blading (she biked, I bladed) and ended up doing just shy of 20 miles. When I was a still a kid (17-20) I did fitness skating, around 30 miles a week. Yet all my inline activity pretty much came to a halt when our first child was born in 2003. I guess I did do a 5k Inline race in 2006, which for skating is pud work.

I have 3 events this year that I would like to participate in. The first is a 5k Run. That's in 9 weeks. Second is a small town Sprint Triathlon which is in 10 weeks that I would like to do to get my feet wet in the sport. The third event is the one that I want to do with my Dad & Sis, a statewide sprint competition, which is at the end of July. I'm not expecting these to be easy feats for myself, but that just signals that it's worth trying.

The cool thing is that I have found a ironman winner that runs a LBS that is helping me in getting an appropriate bike as I don't have a bike at all yet. He makes me feel like this could become a lifetime passion. I'm anxious for all that is to come, and to have people in the world of triathlons behind me in helping me prepare. Hopefully I'm not in over my head. Over&Out -Phil

Welcome to the group Phil! Kudos to you for setting some goals. Having 2 little ones it's tough to find time to take care of yourself, but you definitely owe it to them. By the way, you are still a kid Good luck with your training!

Phil,

How exciting to be off on this new adventure. I can still remember my first sprint, 1999, it was so exhilarating to cross that finish line.

Wishing you the best,
