Hello! My name is Phil Zlomke and I would love to have someone mentor me in becoming a triathlete. I am a complete noob and I found that the
(sprint
) triathlon looks like a very appropriate goal. My sister and dad did one last year and I basically would love to join them this year.
As for me, I am 25 and overweight
(5' 7" & 215lbs
). I'm a family man, a student, and a Youth minister. I have a wife of 5 years and two beautiful daughters
(3 & 4 months
). I am a student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney pursuing a degree in Middle Grades Education
(Mathematics and Physical Education
). And I get to play with students on the weekends for my so-called job. Like many, I made a new years resolution, yet for once I have stuck to it. I have been weight training for the last 7 weeks with cardio and have successfully lost a handful of pounds
(could have lost more if I could get the whole eating thing consistent
). My weight loss goal is 180 for the sprint at the end of July.
My biggest accomplishment in the "physical" realm would have to be an "almost" inline marathon. My wife and I went bike-blading
(she biked, I bladed
) and ended up doing just shy of 20 miles. When I was a still a kid
(17-20
) I did fitness skating, around 30 miles a week. Yet all my inline activity pretty much came to a halt when our first child was born in 2003. I guess I did do a 5k Inline race in 2006, which for skating is pud work.
I have 3 events this year that I would like to participate in. The first is a 5k Run. That's in 9 weeks. Second is a small town Sprint Triathlon which is in 10 weeks that I would like to do to get my feet wet in the sport. The third event is the one that I want to do with my Dad & Sis, a statewide sprint competition, which is at the end of July. I'm not expecting these to be easy feats for myself, but that just signals that it's worth trying.
The cool thing is that I have found a ironman winner that runs a LBS that is helping me in getting an appropriate bike as I don't have a bike at all yet. He makes me feel like this could become a lifetime passion. I'm anxious for all that is to come, and to have people in the world of triathlons behind me in helping me prepare. Hopefully I'm not in over my head. Over&Out -Phil
