Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Turtles, another question - this one relating to running I'm training for my first full. Somewhere around the 12-13 mile mark, my feet start to hurt and I just have to deal with it until I finish the run. I'm up to 15 miles now and by the end, I'm glad to finish. The main issue is the bottom of my feet, especially the area under each toe. Not sure if it's the socks or my custom orthodontic or what. I use running socks. Balga running socks - medium weight. They are seamless and comfortable. I haven't gotten blisters or anything but my get really tired, then start to hurt. Usually my feet tire before my legs. I've tried Body Glide but it didn't make any difference. Any suggestions? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WAEF - I remember my feet hurting on my long runs too - I think ice baths helped and stretching the feet help too... it sounds like it's a muscle ache more than a skin (blister) issue, so I don't think changing socks or using bodyglide would help... it's just your feet saying - Help I'm doing more than I want to do! You're already wearing orthotics, so they should help... how many miles are on your shoes? Is it time for some better cushion? I like to have 2 pairs of shoes so I can switch between the 2 pairs, that way you can really tell when it's time to retire them. okay enough rambling... good luck! FBP - gl on your tri this weekend... can you run backwards if you see you're not the last person coming in? I can understand a good sport prize, but don't advertize it LOL |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Freddy - good luck this weekend, now there is a Tri that I would have a chance winning some money! WAEF - +1 on what Diane said, when I was running longer distances I got that somewhat at the end. After awhile it stopped. Well my half-marathon training starts in a couple of weeks (San Antonio RnR in Nov). Not going to push it hard, probably looking at 2:15-2:30 finish. The plan is run 2-3 times a week, speed work every other week, slowly increasing distances with long runs every other week opposite speed training. Will intensify after my Sept Tri. SRD for me, was supposed to get a bike fit tomorrow but I will have to reschedule. Bought a pair of Tri shoes on eBay. Just tired of the buckle issue on my cannondales. To hard to get on/off even outside of a race. Everyone have a good one! |

![]() | ![]() Pete, GOOD LUCK on your race this weekend!!! I dont think you will win the good sport award...even though you are a great sport!! WAEF...I agree with all the posts...it seems to be more just getting used to the distance! I am volunteering at the Danskin womens tri this wekend. I have a group of women that I have been mentoring over the last several months who are doing their first race. I am excited for them but VERY sad that I cant race. I am feeling much better and have 2 weeks before I can start eating solid food again. I have lost a fair amount of weight...probably not the best way to loose!I have been swimming and doing a little running. I miss biking...and I really dislike the trainer but I may have to resort to that. Enjoy the last month of summer ![]() |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mav - have fun volunteering. Hey just a quick fly by to toot my own horn. Well after months of whining about my swimming I finally hit 1000 meter continuous swim on Friday. Could have kept going. One bummer, they had moved the bulkhead back so it was at 25 meters. Man that was a lot of turns. If they leave that I am going to have to learn flip turns. Bi-lateral breathing wasn't great but better. Going to stick to masters class twice a week and one long day on my own. I think 1000 meters works as my next tri is 800 meters. Should get me used to doing the distance and having some energy left over. Now I just need to get faster. Did it in ~23:30, need to get it to 20:00. Hopefully masters class will help with that. Sound like a good plan or should I swim a little farther on my long day? |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() Careful increasing your distance too quickly. Masters class is a "distance" swim as you are swimming pretty long distances...just not continuous. Your shoulders/ rotator cuffs dont really notice the difference between masters and continuous. If you get sore...cut back. Listen to your body and you will be OK ( Did I just say that?) |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Mav! But I would be substituting a long swim for a Masters Class session. So instead of three masters classes per week that I am doing now, I would do two and one long swim. The long swim would actually be less distance than masters class. While I believe the Masters class is helping me in many ways and in the long run it would make longer swims easier I don't have the time. So one long swim per week to get used to distance swimming. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey y'allAdd a finish line to the total !!Had a great race. More complete race report will follow. Finished in 1:51. Considering that the bike course was 26k instead of the usual 20k and that both the bike and run courses were ++++ hilly, I am really pleased. My swim felt great - 16 minutes - and the run was better than expected (around 29 minutes I believe).eLong day already - up at 5:00, 90 minute drive to the race site, tc. Time for a shower and a snooze ![]() ![]() |

Finish lines updated... Everyone seems to be doing great.....I will have some comments later. I have to go wash off the chairs and umbrellas and all the beach paraphenalia (sp?) sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Race Report Up at 5:00 a.m. to load the car and head off. The race was being held in Saint John, a city roughly 120 kilometers from Freddy Beach. Very foggy as we headed south towards the Bay of Fundy but no rain and the temp was nice – roughly 20c. Found our way to the race site – Rockwood Park –supposedly the largest urban park in Canada. Little bit of an incident in the parking lot – Mrs FBP backed her relatively new car into a big boulder that marked the outline of the lot. Damn. No major damage just a bit of scratching and an awful lot of anger, hurt pride, etc. Registration/body marking was quick and easy then into transition to get set up. I was amongst the early arrivals so found a great spot near the end of row nearest the bike exit. Lots of hot bikes – not many in Sebastian’s price range – but aside from some envy I wasn’t bothered by it. Before long it was into my wetsuit and down to the beautiful lake for a warm up swim. Water was very clear, chilly but not cold. Quick race briefing then off we went. I seeded myself near the back but still got and gave a few hits and kicks. By halfway to the first buoy I was in a decent rythym and had some open water. There were 3 or 4 folks near me who seemed to be about the same ability so that was a help.Swim went well. Finished in 16:00 which was 2:00 better than my tri last year. I also felt “fresher” than last time – a good omen I figured. (45 of 64 in the swim) Fairly long run up to T1 with lots of folks lining the route. Found my bike, stripped off my wetsuit, helmet on then socks and shoes. Quick drink and off I went. I think I was quick but no specific splits posted for the transitions.Ride was a worthy challenge. Two 13k loops of a VERY hilly course. By far the biggest hills and most hills I have ever ridden. Road was in bad shape in a lot of places too. Made for some edgy descents!!On the second loop I of course knew what to expect. Tried to be properly geared for the various climbs. Had a bit of trouble (B-man – I will post a question for help on this) but by and large OK. The biggest climb was about a third of the way into the loop. As I was going up it on the second loop two motorcycle cops came up behind me. Don’t tell me I’m tail end Charlie!! Then they go past. I knew it – I am leading the race with an escort like at the TdF. Alas, not so. They zoomed ahead to respond to a racer who was broken down on the side up ahead. As I was going up the hills I kept saying that I was Alberto Contador, “Dancing on the pedals” the announcer kept saying when I watched the TdF yesterday. After the race I was chatting with a fellow who I know is a really great biker and he was commenting on what a tough course it was too. Second loop of he bike was done and into T2.(Bike was also 45th overall) Very quick change and off I went for the run. It was a single loop around the park. Course designer was mean – a 1k uphill grade to start. My legs though felt good so I decided to try and run without the 1 minute walks that I usually take every 10 minutes. Aside from a 30 second walk through the water station I kept going – LRR.Finish was a downhill section, through the chute, received my medal and then off for a warm down. (Run was 52nd overall) After the race there was great food – pizza, fruit, etc. – some prizes (none though for FBP) and then we headed home. All in all I am really pleased. Final placing was 46 of 63 and 13 of 14 in the M40-49. I hadn’t felt like I had done a lot of quality training, especially on the bike, but in the end I exceeded my expectations. Can’t hope for more than that. Edited by FreddyBeachPete 2009-07-27 6:07 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's my question - The course was very hilly and all of the big uphills came immediately after big, fast downhills. I had a bit of trouble getting into the appropriate gear after the speed from going downhill was scrubbed off. What should I be doing ? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pete - CONGRATS on your Race! It took me a while to learn how to gear properly for the hills... what I found was that I put it in a "hard" gear to go downhill, then when I would see the up hill coming, I would put it in an easy gear and when it would catch, it would actually slow me down... so now, I keep it in a "hard gear", wait til the gears catch, then I slowly move the gears as I'm going up the hill until I'll end up in an appropriate gear for the hill, but I'll be able to keep pedaling while climbing... I hope that makes sense. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pete - here is my method. As I approach a hill I shift to a gear I can pedal to the top of the hill (many times this is an estimate and needs to be adapted on the hill) but it is a trial gear. The thought is this way you don't put a huge amount of stress on your derailleur while you are putting big force on the pedals but the real deal (I understand Lance climbs this way too) is to keep the cadence high and reserve big amounts of power for the run. Imagine that you have a book of matches to burn in a race and then you are out of fire, you have to pick where to burn those matches carefully. If you are just coming off a downhill and then immediately starting up I would ride the bigger gear holding the speed as long as possible and then before requiring big force to turn the pedals, drop the gear down and get to spinning. The thought is to spin up the hills and reserve as much power as possible for the run....or to finish a ride only at a high cadence speed ride. You will pass many people who were standing on the climbs pushing the cranks like crazy as you conserve the energy....remember NO ONE HAS EVER WON A TRIATHLON ON THE BIKE. Let me know if the explanation is not clear. sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks to both of you for the advice. Makes sense to me - I'll be trying it over the next couple of weeks on my practice rides. Yippee - start my vacation tomorrow night. We are heading to the family cottage in PEI. I have managed to find a bike rack that will fit our new small car so Sebastian is going to be able to come along!! If I get enough quality workouts done then I will probably register for the Oly in September. If not, I will plan at least one or two more sprints for the late summer and fall. FBP |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan, I put it in the easiest gear possible for the up-hill as I was told to get it in an easy gear... I'm just saying, that if I put it in that easy gear while I still have momentum from the downhill, it slows me down... so I learned to wait a bit before I need to start pedaling... it's more a matter of WHEN I change gears, When I start changing gears, I get into an easy gear pretty quickly, but I still want to be in the "hardest" gear possible for the hill.... it's a balancing act... BELIEVE me, I end up in GRANNY gears all too often ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another question - how much of a decrease in pace (per 100m) should one expect when one increases their swim from sprint (750m) to Oly (1500m). |
![]() ![]() |
Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gear wise, something similar, keep shifting as necessary. If I am "popping" gears I know I am shifting too late but like to keep the gear as high as possible to keep speed. One thing I read is to make sure to pedal all the way thru the hill. Too many folks let up once the hill flattens out some. Until I am on the down side I am pedalling thru it. Pete for the swim it would be going from a 2:25/100 for the sprint to "Kayak!!!!" for the Oly. Hope that helps ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gears - I think we are ALL very close to the same answer. My plan is to gear into a gear that hopefully never spikes the power usage as there are only so many spikes to use. Think of it like this.....an average heart of 140 consistently for an hour is a better deal than having a heart rate at 160 for 30 minutes and 30 minutes at 120 which still averages 140 for the hour. I understand not slowing down...I really don't like to slow down either but I am much more concerned about the entire race rather than one hill...that's what you want to be careful of.....that said, I think we are all saying about the same thing. swim - FBP - I really don't lose much time on my average 100 pace going from 800 or so to 1500. I would say probably in the 5 second range (thinking about that - maybe it is a big time difference) but what it said to me is that since I am so dang slow to begin with it isn't a lot different. I am thinking that going to 2.4 miles it will run up the average 10-15 seconds per hundred.....again, don't worry as much about the pacing as what you heart rate will be when you get out of the water....again....that's the key. Unless you are doing a swimming race. sTRIve |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! On vacation in Brookings, OR. Flights went well, in fact the only delay was waiting for the rental car. I have hertz gold and used to just getting in the car and driving but small airport and slow service. Was going to take the week off from working out but I don't think I can resist the temptation to run on the beach. Lows are in the 50's, perfect running weather. No wetsuit so no swimming in the ocean and didn't bring bike (there would be some cool hill training going on here if I had). Will post pics when I get back. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary - have a great vacation. Sprint triathlon finished - finish line updated. Will do RR later but suffice to say I think the time today is almost identical to last years.....Bike was very windy with several of those fun hills. Mav - how's the mouth? |
