Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED rizer22 - 2011-04-03 8:23 PM Had my MTB TT today. My class was supposed to go off at 11:30, but that got postponed until 12:00. So much for a warm up. I was plenty cooled down by the time we started. It was wicked windy at the start, but got pretty warm once I took off. i was very happy with my finish, as I had a goal of sub 40 mins. Finished 38:38. The course was not overly technical, but there were some pretty nasty rock gardens in just a few areas. Here is what frustrates me. They have been doing this for a long time, and do a great job with it, plenty of volunteers etc, so I won't ever be the jerk to complain, as I know how much work goes into it. The frustrating part, is the accuracy of the finish times. We take off individually, 30 seconds apart. I finished 14th out of 55 riders in my group, pretty happy about that. BUT, I passed the two riders to go off before me, number 125 and number 126, (remember they start 30 seconds each, before me). I passed them pretty quickly into the course and never saw them even close to me again. Somehow, they both finished 3 minutes before me on the time sheet. How does that happen? It also happened to my friend Matt. He passed the guy that started 30 seconds before him, finished at least a minute ahead, and the guy placed 2 spots higher than him. I am not a believer in their timing system. Sorry for venting. Either way, had a great day, and was happy with my finish. Nothing broke on me, or the bike. That's a good day. Sound like you had a fantastic TT! Congratulations! I don't know what I'd do about the chip times though. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Also congrats on the TT steve. Our weather went from 70's Sat to 30's today. Seemed like a great day for an off day to watch the Cubs. Too bad they lost. Tomorrow it is supposed to head back to the 50's and get better as the week goes on. Looking for another great training week. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Congrats to Uncoog for your first Oly. Give yourself a little time to recover a day or off, maybe a massage. Its a tough race! The problem with not meeting goals is you want to get right back on the horse. Once you meet them, you figure if you trainer harder you can get even faster. Damn vicious cycles. Rizer - nice ride! you should definitely look into off road tris, they are are a blast. Personally, I think they are more fun than road tris. After 2 years not on an MTB (herniated disc) I may get back in the MTB saddle this july. Afterall, how will i justify a new 29er if I am not riding? I slept in this mornign (6 AM) after a solid weekend of training, topped off with my 3 year old's princess birthday party. Long ride tonight while watching UConn, go huskies! Long ride tonight while watching UConn, go huskies! Thanks, MTB is def my passion, and def going to do 1 or 2 of the Winding Trails Xterra weekday Tri's. I am def going to look into a 29'er next year. Let me know what you get. And thanks for the tip. I didn't even think of riding the trainer tonight, at 9:30 pm, to watch the Huskies. I may have to sneak in a nap at some point!!

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Thank you all for the kind words. The timing system for this TT does not use chips. It seemed like they would write your number down at the start, and some one was at the finish, which was not even close to where the start was. It def didn't seem like it was a good system. Anyway, I had a blast. Next race, Winding Trails in Farmington, April 17th. True race format, everyone relased at once. Very easy track, where all the strong roadies come out and smoke everyone. They disappear for the rest of the series!! ha ha |

Kelly, I am so sorry to hear this. I am sure you were really bummed. You were so ready for this race and would have killed it!! I hope you are feeling better. Next time.... |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Thanks everyone for the congrats. I came in at 2:57ish, I'll get a race report up soon, and if I take out the time spent getting the bike back to riding condition I would have come in around 2:45 which was a realistic mark for me. Had considered taking a week off of training but I'm totally lost in my days w/o a 4:30 training session so I'm back at it. LOL. Can't go up and down the stairs in my house w/o feeling how sore my legs are but somehow managed an hour trainer ride and a 30 minute jog in z2 this morning. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED I was going to switch my Cleveland HM registration to the 10k run, but I think I'm going to stick with the HM. I'm not going into it with any goal really, though I will hang with the 2:15 pacers for as long as I can If I have to walk some of it, then so be it. Pretty happy with my decision! Now...how to avoid getting injured while running the HM?? |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED btw......I do long runs up to 12 miles on only water. Sometimes I'll fill up my bottle with Gatorade. I can't imagine eating anything while running. Would it be ok to use the Gatorade Endurance only while doing the HM (that's what they provide on the course)? They also provide Hammer Gels (ewww). Will I total bonk or have problems? |

Would it be ok to use the Gatorade Endurance only while doing the HM (that's what they provide on the course)? They also provide Hammer Gels (ewww). Will I total bonk or have problems? Why can't you imagine eating on the run - its not that hard, and the calories are denser than in liquids, so a mouthful of gel is like 1/2 a bike bottle. For me, anything over 1.25 hours gets water and maybe gatorade or hammer gels (I like them and I can buy them by the bottle). anything over 2 hours is gatorade and gels. I find that if I drink too much I get "sloshy" and uncomfortable, so during half and full marathons I rely on gels and mouthfuls of water. |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Along the same lines as jarvy, I need some input please! I ran 12 miles on Sunday - my longest run yet (and it felt fine!) and I have my first HM in 2 weeks. This is the second long run that I ran well, but within an hour of getting home, I have severe nausea, one time with vomiting, with diarrhea (sorry TMI) and then I feel like crap for 2-3 days after. I have been using water on the runs and this last time, I found some electrolyte pills that I took 2 before and 1 at 4 and 8 miles. I also take advil before the long runs. My nutrition before this last long run was oatmeal with agave 2 hours before and 2 cheese sticks one hour before. I would really love to know what I am doing wrong - I feel just awful for 2-3 days after these long runs. My thoughts, and I would love to know yours, are that 1. dehydration despite drinking water on the runs, 2. too much advil on a slightly empty stomach 3. bad luck and got a stomach bug after each run (I have 4 kids that bring me illness all the time) 4. the electrolytes disagreed with me? 5. other??? lack of training, but I feel like I have been following a good plan that has brought me this far over the last 4 months. I would really love your thoughts - I hate being sick after these runs and I am now getting anxious over the HM when I thought I was going in pretty strong. Help! |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED So my avatar is offically incorrect and I can't find a pic small enough to replace it. I have decided to bail out of the HIM for this year. Working consulting and still looking for a job does not lend well to training for a long multisport event. I am getting the runs in and I can fake the swim, but really no bikes. Plus, after the 1/2 mary a week ago, I could not imagine doing an HIM run AFTER 3-4 hours of exercise. So I have taken the pressure off myself for now and will do shorter tris this year and focus on running. Running is my weakness so that is not a bad thing. Having said that I am thinking of doing the Nashville Rock and Roll 1/2 mary and signing up for the 2:45 pace (slower on purpose since they have pace groups) and then doing the Wisconsin Marathon (1/2 distance) the next week. I think I can do it. Also, why don't all running races have pace groups??? And when they do it would be nice if they had one for turtles!!! |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Hmmm.. nutrition is pretty personal. I wouldn't take in any dairy pre race. I think it may have something to do with the bowel issues. I like to sip on my electrolytes and have a steady stream. Could be totally off on the science there, but that's my preference. The thing about hydration is once you think you're behind it's really hard/impossible to catch back up. I've seen warnings lately about over hydration but I find that really hard to do. I've tried believe me. |
