Yesterday I did my utmost to swim to France. After 9.5 hours they decided to pull me out of the water. I had reached the outer edge of the French shipping lane and the shore was in sight. Unfortunately my progress had become so slow and hypothermia and fatigue had taken its toll. The obvious reasons are lack of weight gain and perhaps not sufficient long cold- water swims but there are many factors that contribute to a successful crossing.
I am disappointed not to get to the other side but as Boris Becker said after losing Wimbledon, it wasn’t a war and nobody died! My friends Willo, Greg and Dave looked after me very well with the watching, the feeding and the recovery. Willo got in to swim for a while to try and get me back on track but it was to no avail and he then had the hardest job in having to explain to me that it was all over.
When hypothermia sets in it really plays tricks on your mind and I have no recollection of being pulled out and then dried and warmed up on deck. I do have a rather distressing video of the event though to show me what happened and it’s not pretty! I tried to argue with the captain too but they pulled me in and it was the right decision. After half an hour I was warm again and almost back to normal. There was some pretty violent vomiting and I am feeling the after effects of that today. Apart from that I pulled up well with very little stiffness in the shoulders neck or back which is good.
The trip has been a great challenging and learning experience. Some friends of mine have also not quite made it across and so we will have something in common and sure we will all be back at some stage to take on the challenge again. I have also been reminded on this trip how important friendship is and that the channel is a big team effort.
