NH | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by trigal38 On the one hand I don't enjoy slogging along and not improving at running. On the other hand running 6 days a week for me requires a fair share of running on the treadmill since my body really can't tolerate a lot of pounding on the sidewalk. My favorite runs are obviously trail runs with my dog so it is hard to get excited about the treadmill. Again, on the one hand running often hurts for me - things like foot pain or back pain. More after the runs than during but still it is difficult to wrap my brain around dealing with this 6 days a week. On the other, the BarryP folks say running more at an easy pace will help your body adapt and it won't hurt so much. So, that is where I am torn. I just get a little bored with a lot of short runs on the treadmill and if there is some workout that gets dropped - that will be it. Thanks for your input and perspective . This is great insight. I think this (slogging to get faster) is a huge barrier and a mentality thing. How can you possibly get faster by running slower? I don't know all the physical reasons why, but it works, at least to a point. I took my HM pace from 8:50 to 8:10 over one winter of running slow. I didn't cover a single mile under 9 minutes the entire winter, and most were significantly slower. Like 9:30+. It was the first time I ran more than a month or so without an injury setback. And I was 50 years old, so a younger body might get even more improvement. Maybe there is a speed or an experience level at which running faster is required for improvement, but even then I really believe the fast running needs to be meted out in small doses. A little goes a long way. Save your intensity for the bike where it really pays off without the injury risk! And you're not running slower just to run slower, you're running slower to run more, which can only happen if you're not injured/in pain. And there is no doubt that running more frequently is the safest way, in terms of injury risk, to run more. Have you tried running at your HM pace+a minute? If so, does that still cause some pain? If it does, we should probably figure that out. I would also say stay on the trails if possible, I would LOVE to run on trails, but I just don't have them right outside my house or at work where I typically run. And Dirk is right, for triathlon running 20 miles a week is not a light load. Is the horse beaten yet! |

People have said "high" elbows but I didn't know what that meant, I was thinking high out of the water. See, I really am a dumb newbie!!! Karl, I used to have the same thought and never understood why I should get my elbow so high out of the water. Then one day I had Dumba@@ moment and was like oh it meant high in the water! Since I got into this sport I have done a lot of reading about swim technique and have tried to pull so that my elbows stay high, as Matt cleared up. However, my stroke has always been a little more like climbing a rope, in that my hands come closer together than being further to my side. I will be thinking about this post the next time I get in the water. |

Veteran 454 Cairo, GA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Junkies - I'm still here. Just spent the better part of the morning catching up on posts and getting my abbreviated training log updated. Told my husband I was doing "important" work stuff -- he thinks I am updating this weekends football pool picks. I'm still training and love my new job. Pay is dismal but being around amazing people everyday has been so awesome. I'd love to manage the gym for the long run, not sure it is a financially savvy idea, but I am going to enjoy everyday of it for the next year (at least). Dirk - I hope your knee complies until to get through your next race. Jeff- Thanks for the article, it was something I really needed to read right now. Only you all know this.... I am 90% sure that I will be signing up on Monday for IM Tahoe 2014. To prepare, I think my race plan will look like this next year: February - Tallahassee Marathon (Full) March - Century Ride March - Sprint Tri April - HIM (Chattahoochee) June - Century Ride August - Oly (Chattahoochee) Basically, my plan is to race a lot less. Am I crazy? Wait, don't answer that...... Do you think my I should take anything out of my race calendar as I train for IM Tahoe? I know I have a long ways to go with building my endurance over the next year, but I feel like I have a strong base (maintained my Oly training training plateau/base for most of this year) and with my current job I feel like the time to go for it is now. If any of you think I should really wait another year, please tell me. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the bike. |

Jenn no you are not crazy and if your heart is into doing this then you should do it. I think your race schedule looks fine. What I did this past year was just focus on the training so I did 3 races, 1 oly, 1 HIM and the IM. I didn't want to detract from my training on a bunch of shorter distance races being your time is going to be at a premium. With IM all your training is going to be about volume. I will say one thing to you if you are going to do this you need to make the bike your priority. That means you should pick a winter training plan, Jorge's winter cycling plan, spinervals, trainer road or whatever it is that you want to do and ride 4 times a week. Get strong on the bike. When you do your outdoor biking I would do 4 rides a week until you start getting the longer endurance rides in. I literally spent 8 to 11 hours a week during my peak training on the bike. So if you are going to do this focus your efforts on the bike, don't neglect the swim or the run just make the bike the priority. You will spend the largest majority of your time at IM on the bike. Good luck with your decision and if you need any info on what I went through this past year please ask. I'll share what I have and help in any way I can. Well if Jenn takes the dive in that will be five of us in for IM. Dare I ask anybody else considering? Man I think alot Junkies have lost their minds! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I signed up for two races last night, a local 10k for Nov which is actually on my birthday which is pretty cool. I did it last year on the day I was supposed to run the NYC marathon. It's a cool little local race very close to home so glad to be doing it again. I also signed up for Syracuse 70.3 HIM for next year. I needed to get one on the schedule and I have a lot of friends here from Long Island already signed up so I took the plunge last night. It'll be a good warm up for Mont Tremblant. |

The only real thing I would suggest is that you move your HIM about 4-6 weeks out from the full. In June you're probably not going to have your nutrition dialed in very well to get you into IM racing. I think it's wise to get a long course race that will test your fueling strategy. Waiting a year is something you and your husband should discuss. With a young family it will be him that has to take the girls for the better part of days while you're riding and that's going to effect much of his golfing, etc. I certainly think you'll be able to preparer for a full. A year is a lot of time to get ready. |

I just had to pay for the membership a little sooner than planned. I do think they could allow your current membership to get you in and then require you to buy another at IMWI if you don't have your card at registration. That seems like it would be pretty easy to do. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Good Morning Junkies! JENN - I'm so happy to see you posting! No, you're NOT crazy for planning on IM Tahoo. I have absolute confidence you'll be able to go the distance. Do it. What a year it'll be! KARL - I have a 17 and 18 year old so I won't bust your bubble on your hopes of spending more time with your son in another year. Keep dreaming, though. JOANNE - I agree with your frustration over the required USAT membership. As with Dirk, I was planning on renewing any ways but it's still underhanded. Hope you still decide to go through with the registration. JEFF - Just wanted to lt you know that I'm keeping the 105 12/27 cassette. I had the shop that Dirk deals with take a look at it and they said it's the largest that will fit with my current system and said the $$ I'd have to spend to change it out for one extra tooth wouldn't be worth it. So with your recommendation (having said the same thing) and them backing it up, I'm going to embrace my 12/27 and be confident. DIRK - you're always complaining about something hurting. You're such an old man now. For those that missed it on FB - Dirk had a birthday last week. I think his birthday present from Lisa was the IMWI registration. Man, did that hurt the wallet! So 2 girlfriends and myself (1 girlfriend dropped out) are doing a homebrew 140.6 on Sunday. The course is marked, my bags are packed and the weather looks to be cooperative (sunny and high of 64, low of 42). My hubby and kids will be in our boat, we have 2 friends in kayaks and 1 pontoon at the turn around. My one girlfriend's dad is an IM finisher and mapped the course - a 2 loop swim, 3 loop bike and 2-loop run. We wanted to stay closer to home should we have any problems. The bike course has small rolling hills and the run is mostly flat. We won't DNF ourselves if we don't finish in the time required by IM, but just want to go the distance. We're not starting out until 8:00 to let the sun rise and get the boats in the water. We'll all have headlamps for the dark run. We decided that we're doing all the miles together for safety reasons and because we aren't racing. This means that my one friend who is running Boston in April will have to slow it down for the run but she's assured us it wouldn't be fun any other way. I'm nervous as I don't want to be the one who holds them up from finishing sooner but I'm also excited to see how my body responds to this distance. It'll tell me a lot on where I am and where I need to concentrate my training in the coming year. I don't know what the day will bring but prayers for our safety would be appreciated. I don't know of anyone racing this weekend, is there? Good luck, if so. Have a wonderful weekend my friends!

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Brenda Wow! And I thought I was crazy! That is awesome that you guys have organized your own mock 140.6. Good luck to you and everyone involved in racing and supporting your event, be safe. Also, take good mental notes on swim, bike and run and especially your nutrition. This will go a long way towards understanding what you will need to do for IMWI and what it is actually like to go through the distance. One last thing, I know we all have said this repeatedly but I think the number one priority for you and everyone else doing an IM next year should be the bike! Seriously focus on getting stronger on the bike. |

Extreme Veteran 868 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Brenda that's awesome and yes I will end up registering it was just the point and as I figured I got a generic response from them that there is nothing they can do that they are partnered with Active and USAT and WTC is mandated by them to do this hahahahaha REALLY???? they must think I am stupid. I get that it just means I am paying my fee early but like I said I just re-newed in May. |
