LRR, I'm also working, traveling, adjusting to married life etc. Very little time at work to post and once I get home DH wouldn't appreciate it if I were online chatting instead of spending time together. Given everything, I was thinking of dropping out of the group entirely but decided to stay and just pop in when I can. Even if that's only once a month. Hope that's ok with the group.

Hey all!
Got back from vacation Friday night.  Lost internet access at the house Saturday afternoon.  Cable company called today to say they fixed it (falling tree limb took out the line).  Ran once on the beach during vacation but hiked a lot!  Rode Saturday (short 12 mile ride), ran four miles Sunday, and a 1050 swim today.  Taking it easy getting back into workouts.   Little over one month until my next Tri.

Sorry for my long absence...I am slowly returning to "normal". I finally got to eat solids yesterday...it was amazing. I really missed food. My jaw gets pretty tired and I get full real fast. Lost about 8 pounds during the whole ordeal. I need quite a bit of dental work, so I am sure I wont be putting it all on at once. I still have some problems with my right wrist and I am going for an MRI tommorow. Will know if its tendons and ligaments or just inflammation which will dicatate the treatment.

I have been swimming and running (albeit slowly). I can't bike because my wrist hurts too much on the hoods, but I am fine on the trainer( I just dont like it much)

Went to the Sox game last night!!! Go SOx...huge fight...Youkilis thrown out...Francona thrown out ( thought it was a Bruins game for a few minutes). Just a lot of fun. We took my parents and had box seats. My Dad had never been to Fenway, it was a lot of fun, he really enjoyed it. I loved the food

No racing for me this season, but I have a big year planned for next year. Plan on doing Boston Marathon, RI 70.3 and IM FLA( OK I said it!!!)

Pete, I am still in awe of the blind guys tri...I have told everyone I know about it!!!! JUST AMAZING

Bryan...IMAZ is approaching. How are you feeling? One of the people who was with me when I crashed is doing IMAZ. I hope you can meet him...he is a great guy. Also kathy G( from BT) who I train with is going out to IMAZ to volunteer. If I need to have surgery on my wrist I may join her as I wont be returning to work for a while

I will be better about posting...I promise

How do you decide what races to do? I'm FREAKING out just a bit...

The first race I have written in on my Calendar is Sept 12... that's in 4 weeks EEEEEEK... I've heard "not so good" things about this race, and it makes me wonder if I should do it or not... I just signed up for a swim clinic that will take me through to my 'A' race on October 17. So, if I do the race on Sept. 12, I miss one of the practices.

The next race on my Calendar is on Sept 26 or Sept 27. I also have a concert to go to on the 26, so it would be nice to do the race in the morning, then go out at night - instead of worrying about waking up early, etc. to do the one on the 27th.  The one on the 26th is about a 2 hour drive, and I would need to get a Hotel Room for the night since they don't have same-day packet pick-up   BUT, the race is run by one of the BEST race organizers around.  I don't know too much about the one on the 27th except it's IN TOWN.  If I do the one on the 26, I miss swim practice.

OR, do I just SCRAP BOTH of those races and just concentrate on my 'A' race on October 17. That would mean that I've only had 1 triathlon START/(hopefully)FINISH line this year...

Any and ALL advice is welcome...

Mav - you've been through a lot! I hope your wrist is okay, and that your teeth get fixed up nice... I'm amazed that you're able to swim & run and do as much as you do - You're AMAZING!

To the rest of you - Ask Gary what happened

Diane - I would do at least one of the races and miss a practice.  Each race that I have done I have learned more than any one (or two) swim practices would have taught me.

Four weeks off from my last Tri of the season (as of now).  Overall I was hoping I could get more running speed work in and some longer rides but it is getting difficult to get the time.  May have to accept the fact that I will be BOP again and start concentrating on getting faster for 2010.  I have been doing 1000+ meter continuous swims and don't see the 800m OWS as being more than a battle of nerves.  I have been practicing sighting in the pool and getting better.  I have found that my form starts to falter around 800-850 meters making sighting harder.

Ran over an Armadillo the other night.  Luckily just with the rear wheel so no crash.  Tried rollers last night, almost killed myself and am going to buy a trainer instead.

Hi everyone. Just back from two glorious weeks at the family cottage in Prince Edward Island. Weather was awesome. Justice I suppose since last year my two weeks were nothing but rain. Got in a lot of good riding and several decent runs. Not much swimming though. I love the ocean but HATE running into jellyfish !!!Did my first ever group ride whilst there. Through a LBS was told about it. They were all more experienced riders than me but I hung on with the group for about 45km then rolling hills caused me to fall of the back of the pack. One nice fellow slowed down and alllowed me to catch up to him then he pulled for me the rest of the way {another 15 km).Have decided that I will not attempt the Oly in September. Just don't feel that I could do it justice given my spotty training over the past 6 weeks so will look for another sprint to replace it with.Mav - great to read that you are on the mend.

Hey Freddy, welcome back.  Sounds like you had a great time.  The group ride sounds great, haven't had a chance to do that yet.  Most of the groups leave a little too early for me.

Had a great masters swim on Friday.  Really forced me to push my swimming.  Progressively faster sets of 50's than 25's but I stayed with the class.  Couldn't quite do the complete distances (50 meters at 40 seconds was just too much) but I did what I could.  Afterwards I realized I swam farther than my usual Friday distance swims and I swam a lot harder/faster.  I actually hit some 54 second 50 meters consecutively.  Would have been a 1:48/100meter if I could have combined them in one swim (11 second break between groups on that one).  At the end as I was cooling off coach came over to tell me I did a great job and that my form had not fallen apart at the end.  Not perfect but still looked good at the end.  Made my day.

Mav - glad you're recovering....while I hope you don't need surgery - having you come to IMAZ would be cool....keep me posted.  The volumes are growing....quickly.

Diane - I like doing races that are well run....sounds like then the answer would be do the 26th - party like a rock star that night and then get to work for your Oct A race.  No freaking out...that's why we are here.

FBP- no excuses on the Oly...you would be fine - and we all know how fast you are.....(sandbagger).  Good job on the group ride...that was very nice for the roadie to slow down and pull you....many would have just ridden off.  Did they know you were a triathlete?  A lot of roadies don't like us for some reason.

Dan - so you are becoming our little guppy - good on you - one thing you will begin to realize is that masters serves a great purpose - however, most masters groups focus on swimming fast and in reality while we all want to be fast - what we really want is to come out of the water with a reasonable heartrate, feeling good and ready to ride and run.  Not bashing your masters accomplishment, just letting you know what many masters groups are like.  Although, a good friend of mine in Plano, TX, goes to a masters class taught by a triathlon coach and they swim for endurance as well so hopefully you have a coach who teaches that way too.

me - well, the training is ramping up....I was supposed to ride a metric century yesterday but ended up doing 70 miles....that last 7.5 was pretty grueling....a lot of hills.  Then I got in my truck and turned into SAG man....ended up picking up two riders who didn't feel they could finish....you can imagine the relief on their face when somebody pulled up giving them an option.  One of them was really hurting - he had been drinking water and had 16 oz of Gatorade.  Nothing else in almost 6 hours.  I had grabbed a sandwich on the way to get them so he got my potato chips, pickle and my recovery drink to put some calories and electrolytes in his body.  He was on the verge of getting sick.  It was 100 degrees when most everyone finished....I got in under the wire at only 96-97 degrees.

Please be sure you are taking in electrolytes and calories in any workout over one hour.  In really hot temps remember you will need some extra sodium.....do a sweat test and be sure you are drinking enough.  Let me know if you need to know how to do a sweat test.

Did you mean me?  Actually the coach does work with Triathletes and is a big supporter of the RocketChix Tri program.  She often has distance swims (Monday was a 1 miler, I got there late and did 1050meters).  She understands that my goal is Tri's although I did tell her I would love to be fast enough to do some swim meets some day.

I guess my point was that on my own I would be working on distance.  In the masters class the goal is form, distance, and building speed.

Gary - yes I meant you....my apologies....I think I was wondering what happened to MSUDan who was a regular last year.  Excellent on the coach and your goals.  I have just seen some people for whom masters did a great job for a short period and then becames less effective.  Sounds like you are with a great group.

I joined a Masters Swim - but it's focus is for Triathletes... we meet once per week - most of the time out at the lake which is great that I'm getting OWS experience... BUT... for the next 9 weeks (A race prep) they want me to swim 4 days/week (3 on my own) and they are providing the work-outs (isn't that nice)  I should add that out of 11 people, only 2 of us are doing the Sprint... the rest are training Oly & Half.

With running 3x per week for Half Marathon Training, I have run out of days.. as it is, I haven't been on my bike enough AT ALL... I KNOW I can ride for 12.5 miles, but I would like to do it well...

Taking Friday off I think helped my long run this morning... I did 9 miles and a min faster per mile than last week!  Not sure where that came from - but I'll take it!

I just don't know where I'll put in another swim - ugh...

LRR - no problem, figured something like that.  BTW, congrats on the ride!  I need to start getting some 40-50 mile rides in but with the days getting shorter and kids sports kicking in it's getting harder.  I have been trying to pick up a Trainer but so far haven't gotten one (I want a fluid trainer) in my price range (yep, I tend to be cheap).  When I do start looking at longer distances I will have to figure out my nutrition plan.  So far, gels or granola bar, and X-ade has been suffice for 1hrs.

Diane - Good luck with that, my masters class I swim 3 days a week.  I bike 3 days and run 2 days for my 1/2 training.  May add one more day of running and do more bricks but will only do a couple of miles.

ok, I figured out a new schedule... question... is a Drainer/TM ok for a brick?  I've always gone from my bike to run on road for my bricks... but it's too darn hot outside to do that...  I scheduled a bike/run brick every Tuesday - it gets me my brick, and I don't have to wake up WAY early for it - if I do it in the gym   I'll be happy when it cools down a bit, u know?

Diane - you are fine on trainer/treadmill.  BUT - 4 freaking swims a week....no way for me...I RARELY swim three times much less 4.  Every group you play with is the same - cyclists say you need 3 or 4 or even 5 rides per week, running groups want you to run 3-6 days per week and swim groups want 3-4 swims....Trying to satisfy these groups with their well intentioned ideas seems to me to be a certain recipe for disaster (over training).  Do not forget the importance of a day off.  You are all training a LOT.  Be careful and don't overdo it to the point of injury.

We are in the midst of a real heat wave up here. Temps are around 90 and very humid. No air conditioning in our offices so it is just wicked. How do y'all survive in the southern states???? Next up - Hurricane Bill is supposedly going to impact us later this weekend. Sheesh.

University pool is closed for 2 weeks of annual maintenance so no swim training possible. I hope to get out on my bike this weekend. I had not one but two flats while I was away on vacation. Hopefully I can get more than one or two rides out of this tube!

Have a great day everyone.

Freddy - ouch on no A/C.  Around here A/C is standard, heck my bosses truck blows cold air thru the seat cushions.  With our heat/humidity that is a tempting feature.

Actually we have had a long summer, even the locals are getting tired of this.  Plus we have been in the Rain, Sun, Rain, Sun pattern.

For my next race they just posted that it is full and they posted everyones bib number.   Woohoo! getting close!

Since Sept 13th is my last tri for the season I may cut back to 2 swims a week after the race.  Based upon last years results, and my projected results, the fasted swimmer in my AG would beat me by 6 minutes.  But the fastest biker would beat me by 15 minutes (20 mile course).  So will probably ramp up bike time to reduce that 15 minutes to 5-6 minutes.

FBP - since you are perfecting your flat repair skills --- do you have any tips?  We haven't seen a FBP video or slideshow lately.....in fact - our newer peeps have never seen you strut your stuff.......

Gary - send some rain our way....we are in a 10000 year drought....now that I said that it will probably rain on every bike ride between now and IMAZ.  Good plan but don't blow up on the bike....remember your finish place only matters after the run....

Here is my flat repair process:

  1. Look at flat tire and curse loudly;
  2. Curse a second time because it is the rear tire which is a pain to get on/off;
  3. Undo the quick release mechanism and frig around with the chain and derailleur to extract the rim;
  4. Look at hands to assess how much grease is now on hands;
  5. Wipe hands on the grass (if minor amount) or curse a third time and go find somewhere to wash hands (if large amount);
  6. Use 3 tire irons contained in handy-dandy seat pouch to lever the tire off the rim;
  7. Extract old tube;
  8. Examine tire to see if there is a nail or glass that has punctured it;
  9. Offer thanks to my higher power if there is not because tires are expensive;
  10. Reinstall tire and new tube (also contained in seat pouch);
  11. Attempt to use CO2 cartridge to reinflate as practise for if this should happen to you while out on a ride;
  12. Curse when the C02 cartridge discharges improperly without inflating the tire;
  13. Search for pump and use to inflate tire;
  14. Frig around trying to get rim back onto the frame with chain in place;
  15. Repeat Step 4;
  16. Repeat Step 5;
  17. Go for a ride;
  18. Stop by LBS to purchase another tube and CO2 cartidge;
  19. Explain to Mrs FBP why there is yet another charge on the Visa account from the LBS;
  20. Repeat Steps 1 through 19 two days later.

Oh Pete...you are funny. I feel your pain. I hate when I flat!

Hot as blazes here. BUT I went for my first bike ride since my crash. Scary at first but by the second half I felt really good. SLow ride. My wrist still hurts a little when on the hoods...but who needs brakes?????

Got my teeth fixed...I am almost good as new. I can eat anything as long as its not too chewy. I missed food.

This weekend I am driving to NH to watch all my BT friends who are doing the Timberman HIM and some sprinters. It should be fun and rainy. I wish I was racing but happy to be cheering.

I return to work next week ( hopefully

Good luck with your races...I am cheering

Here's a little disclosure - I just put Jacques Steinberg on a plane for NYC - Jacques is an author (and a NY Times reporter) who I met last year at IMAZ.  He is doing a book following 6 first timers doing IMAZ.  It so happens that your fellow turtle is one of those 6.  I just spent two days with him....hopefully I didn't say anything to humiliate myself.  I will let you know as I find out more.

Freddy - you forgot
5a. Curse even louder when you realize that brown grass wasn't really brown grass.

Mav - Congrats on the bike ride and healing.  Your one tough cookie

LRR - I actually know someone who will be famous.  I want an autographed copy of the book!  Congrats.

Diane - My hat is off to you.  Today was my 3rd swim for the week and I am done for.  4 swims a week is not in the cards for me yet.

Alright, On the upside my swimming continues to improve.  I can hang with the Masters class for the most part and my speed/endurance is improving.  Biking is coming along nicely except for distance.  20-25 milers seem to be the most time I have but my avg speed is creeping up.  Getting some more running miles in, not a lot but should be doing another 5 miler on Sunday and my 5k easy runs are getting faster.

Lastly I am practicing taking my shoes off before I get off the bike, then doing a flying dismount.  Biggest issue is the shoes dragging once I am off the bike.

For my last race next month, it has sold out and the assigned bib numbers.  I am #30, pretty jazzed about this race.  31 guys in my AG.  Hopefully I can beat at least one of them so I am not last in my AG.

Gary's usual question.  I had one Tri that required everyone to come to a complete stop before entering T2.  Is that a USAT rule?  In this case the dismount area was at the bottom of a hill and I think they were a little worried of people flying down the hill.

Gary - there is no complete stop rule.  Your flying dismount shouldn't be a problem.  I have always been concerned about stubbing my toe.....no seriously, I watched a guy tear up his big toe so proceed with caution but there is no doubt it is faster as long as you can run on the surface heading into T2.  Your bike distances are fine...I would like to see you get a ride or two in the 30-34 range before your olympic.  Also, you should try to run at least 5-10 minutes off several bikes.  One or two a week would be fine.  Just get the brain used to the feeling after a 25+ mile ride.  You will beat more than one in your age group (I have confidence in you)  -- no more negative self talk.
