I have my HM running but I have to get on the bike. Yep, even though we were supposed to bike this month, I have been focusing on my hills. That is when I have been focusing on any training at all. Any ideas Ghoulies? I'm running and I'm pretty sure Kim is running. You are running. Everyone else should be running, too. So let's go with running. We are going to run our azz's off in July! Oh please, oh please! Here's hoping. ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Endocrinologists/Robin: Have you been previously diagnosed? Why did you need to be referred to an endocrinologist? Family docs can order a test and get baseline info...TSH. If TSH is high then hypothyroidism is likely and then the doc can decide if they can manage it on their own or not. Synthroid is the main drug used for hypo and its difficult to get the right dosing, but family docs can manage it on their own. But maybe thats not how it works down there. I've never understood why there is so many referrals to specialities...up here in CAN there is definately a change over to the "if you can deal with it yourself, deal with it yourself" for family medicine. I'm not completely sure of what it is like in the states, but I do know that is why health care down there is sooooo $$$$$. Specialists are $$$$$. Interesting article: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/01/090601fa_fact_gawande My bias is obvious due to my nationality...and I can't really talk because I want to be an internal medicine specialist so technically I would want referrals. But some things just don't need referrals. Technically I think I prefer my family doctor to any specialist I've ever had to see (I think I've seen 1--ENT)...more personalized care and more history with that doc, so they know you better. Just my own random thoughts. Again I'm bias probably in 2-3 different ways ![]() |

First, having a DR that will take you seriously enough to do the tests. Second, TSH is only one test and the levels that are "normal" are a range. If you are on the low end of the range, yet normal you are NORMAL. Even though that may not be normal for you. It is hard to get a Dr to look at all of the symptoms as a whole rather than one test = one diagnosis. That is why I am going to an endocrinologist who has a reputation for multiple tests including cortisol, T3/T4 (not sure about those), metabolic function etc etc etc. I am with you on the family doctor rather than specialists. The tend to look at a person in the whole. EXCEPT when you do not have a decent family Dr. and building up a relationship for a Dr to know what is normal or not for ME takes time and $$ I do not have. |

They know they left me with a bad taste in my mouth, so if they want me to come back and work for them they are going to have to offer way better than what I have now. Then I can say to the other company this is what the other company offered me, what are you going to do? As much as I want to get out of here, I will have to be per$uaded to leave. ![]() |

EXCEPT when you do not have a decent family Dr. and building up a relationship for a Dr to know what is normal or not for ME takes time and $$ I do not have. True. The statistical average and the whole design of "normal" ranges is kind of ridiculous. "Inappropriately normal" is one of my favourite terms from endocrinology. I'm not really sure why doctors don't seem to follow their own doctrine of "look at the whole picture" and "differential diagnosis"...Maybe they just get so focused on what is normal and classical presentations...who knows? I think its ridiculous. Seeing how thyroid problems are probably one of the most common medical conditions (for women), it doesn't make sense that doctors are so unwilling to make the diagnosis. Hope the endocrinologist figures it out. Hopefully she just orders a full panel and can get you answers!!!! I'm with Kim on the being your own health advocate. ![]() |

((stepping off my soap box now))) When my kids ride with me, or are riding up and down the road and around the driveway when I'm outside I make them wear helmets. It's actually a law in PA that under the age of 12 a helmet is mandatory. My husband does not make them wear helmets, and neither do his family members which my kids spend a lot of time with. I am trying to teach my kids to make the decision for themselves to wear them, and why, so they will wear them when I'm not around. |

She wouldn't make the kids wear helmets at all. Jim is as much a fanatic as I am on this issue (probably even more). We taught them that you didn't have to wait to be told to be smart, just go ahead and be smart and wear the helmet. Somehow it worked, they wouldn't ride without them. Victory! |

Probably not. I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket or their parents getting a ticket because their kid wasn't wearing a helmet. Sometimes I give them the look..."its my, you should be wearing a helmet look"...haha... I had a little girl and her mom in that I had to get a history off of last year.
