It is my swimming bete noire, but with a ton of focus on it this off-season I think I've had a decent breakthrough. I won't know htta, though, until I have a few race swims to judge times by! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - A true negative split, to my mind, is based on halves, and so I'm sure that the second half of your run was faster than the first half. Am I right, or am I right? Also, is 0.06km about equivalent to 16s, which is probably what you were looking for in order to finish in 8:45 or less. For me, 0.1km is about 30s on an average training run, which would mean that 0.06 would be 18s........so I'd say that you can count what you did as a fine "descending ladder". (I think thta's the name of what you wanted -- each km faster than the previous one. So! You knocked off a true negative split and an asterisk descending ladder. Congratulations! As for doing it in a race, I don't see why not. The differential between the first km and the second is huge, and just about as huge between 1st and 3rd. That tells me that you could probably be more aggressive at the start and still have the stuff to finish strong. Your next run might benefit from a conservative first half a km, and then start cranking it up. Sound like a concept to you? Belatedly, congrats on surviving the meeting a few days ago. I should've made it a priority to say something right then, but it got overwhelmed by all the tri-technical stuff here the past several days. I hope you can relax a bit about it all now and get back to life without looking over your shoulder. |

Master 2236![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSED"Descending ladder" I'll remember it. My biggest limiter since November has been one kind of pain or another..thigh, hip, ankle.....It was nice to have a run without any real pain. As early as Tuesday's 5 miles I struggled with some pain. Yes it was a relief to dodge the layoff reaper this time around! |

Master 2236![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSo a strategy for tomorrows 15k? Last nights little 5k break through suddenly had me imagining more than just a survival shuffle. This morning I felt a little soreness in my thigh but it has gone away as I've been up and around. I tend to start feeling discomfort around the 5-6 mile point on my runs at home, however my personal route is hilly. My 5 and 7 mile routes have a bit over 300 feet of climbing in short steep segmentsv. Tomorrows route in West McKinney (If Steve remembers the area) is mostly neighborhoods, some rollers and mostly on multi use trails bellow street level, with some steep but very short climbs to grade. Some will be on residential streets. A 1.5 hr finish would be nice, 1:45 or even 2 is more realistic ..opinions on what to expect or shoot for? This will be my long run for the week. Im thinking run a 12 minute pace the first 3, then 10.5 or 11 the second three then see if I can get a 9.5-10 for the last... |

Member 179![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSteve, I went to the pool and tried to concentrate on whatyou wrote. It felt much different than how I had been swimming. When I breathe to once side I can see what I am doing and then I switched. I felt almost off balance in the sense that I veered to one side. I guess one side is stronger. It should be my right side (I'm right handed) but when I swim in open water I go to the right as if my left were the stronger side. Today in the pool it was whatever side I was breathing on so therefore concentrating on the pulling and pushing motion. This is going to take some time. But I think I understand what you said and I could feel the difference between the 2 positions. Of course today the pool was crowded and I had to swim in circles so I was always concious of the person behind me catching up and running me over. That does not happen very often (the crowded part). So I'll keep at it, it will force me to swim more which is more gentle on my aging parts. Ellen |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDToday's bike ride was not to be. I decided to can it after almost getting blown over walking outside. I figured it was safer to stay on my feet than try to ride a bike on open roads. So instead I went for a run and it was amazing! On Wednesday, my legs felt super heavy and it was really hard to get any speed. I felt like I was working much harder than regular to keep up a normal pace. Today I felt almost as light as a feather so that's a really good sign. My watch died at the very beginning of my run, so I couldn't get a cadence count. I think, though, based on number of blocks run in a given interval, my cadence is in the mid-80s or so. I'm not positive, but that's how I guesstimated my intervals today since I didn't have my watch to tell me when to switch from running to walking...I just went with cadence to kinda sorta figure out how long I was supposed to run. All in all, it seems like I ended up running more than walking time-wise (my intervals now are equally split into a 2' jog and 2' walk) and ran the last part home straight, without any breaks.I think the run ended up shorter than had I been using my watch, but I'm assuming that I ran about an equal amount of time and distance, so in the end I'm pretty sure it works out. And I discovered a new way to motivate myself to run a bit longer when I feel like stopping...instead of looking at the watch and watching the seconds go by ever so slowly (which I couldn't do today anyways), I can just count my steps and convince myself to run just 10 more and then 10 more and then 10 more. Those come much faster than seconds and counting keeps my mind occupied. So a lot of good came out of skipping my bike workout today. And by skipping, I mean substituting. Kasia |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSteve, I feel like I have massive mood swings these days. And they directly affect how hard I push myself in workouts. Compare the post from yesterday to the one I just posted and you can see what I'm talking about. And to solve that, I need to sleep because sleep is good. The Sunday swim would most likely be on my own. There is a scheduled Masters workout at 8 am and another one at 9:30 but I'm pretty sure I won't be out of bed that early. It's my only day to truly sleep in and have no obligations so I'm going to take advantage of that. Overall, the Masters program is good. On Tuesdays I go to a beginner's swim session so there are more slow people (that, and there are very few people crazy enough to be in the pool at 6 am when there's another session in the same pool at 7, so less intimidation). That workout is more distance-oriented or speed-oriented, depending on the mood of the coach. Thursday mornings, on the other hand, are more technique work with a different coach. Although there are many many fast people in this class (it's the one I mentioned where I had a lane all to myself when the rest of the swimmers were packed 5 to a lane), for some reason it doesn't seem to bother me all that much. I think because I'm slow and need the group's workouts tailored to my speed, the coach pays more attention to me and analyzes my stroke and tells me how to fix it. So I work on that a lot during those days. I haven't been able to make it the last couple of weeks because first I overslept accidentally and this week on purpose, but I do miss going to that one because it helps so much with my stroke and that's the main reason I signed up for the Masters program. Oh, and I also really like the Thursday group because on my first day the people in the lane next to mine said that this session helped them immensely with their stroke and if I kept coming I would improve quickly. They were very welcoming and sincere, which was nice. So yeah, overall the Masters program is great but lately I think I've just had a bad attitude about it. I like the two sessions I go to and need to make more of an effort to get to bed early to make it to them. I'm also kind of mad at myself for losing all the speed I had worked to develop and skipping out on too many workouts, which translates to self-loathing and feeling down about my speed, something I can only fix by swimming more. But that requires acknowledging my slowness and being ok with it, which I'm working on. In short, I just think I need an attitude adjustment and then I'll be able to enjoy going swimming again. Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - Your plan of attack sounds very reasonable. Seeing as how you're not sure what all to expect, starting slow makes fine sense. I mean, for most runs for most anyone, starting slowly is the sensible thing to do. I think I prefer the DESCENDING nature of those splits as a goal, as opposed to a more fixed overall time-goal, such as 1:45 or 2:00. It takes the big-pictuire pressure off, while still providing some drama in the form of managing your effort so that your pace gets faster as the distance progresses. I put that DESCENDING there just because in my searching for the correct term last night, the best I could come up had nothing to do with ladders. So, I guess it's bst top just think of your approach these days as being "descending kilometers" or "descending miles". If you mention either of those to me ---- I'll know what you're talking about! Let us know how the 15km goes. Have a good 'un! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDALEX - Puerto Rico? Sweet --- especially if you can get some surfing in! I never have, but I have always wanted to, and still do. It was very frustrating growing up in Massachusetts and listening to the Baech Boys, and Jan & Dean, and The Venturas back in the early 60s. They were just singing all the time aboit surfing in California.......and there I was in surfless Massachusetts. Bah! I can say that I was one of the frist generation of skateboarders in MA, and even bought a Hobey skateboard just to get as close to a Hobey surfboard as possible, but that was just a hollow pursuit compared to how I imagined surfing to be. ANYHOW, I hope you do it and have a blast! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN - Good try on that! And you're right that it feels very different; it still does for me whenever I really emphasize it. As for veering, I do that too --- but mine is to the left! I too am right-handed, but what I think affects it for me is that I am a right-seide breather, which means my rotation is more effective to that side, which would also likely make my right pull stronger, thus causing me to drift to the left ( just like rowing a boat with a tstrong right oar but a weaker left oar). Then funny thing is that when I do one-armed pulls, my left is producing more force, I am sure. But when I do these I am not rotating back and forth as I do when I swim normal, so my body position is about even on both sides. I think part of the reason for a strong single-arm pull on the left is that because of the shoulde separation I sufferd in '09, I cannot pivot my arm from the right shouklder as much as I can from the left, so my catch is not as forcefully-positioned on the right. Maybe? There are lots of refinements you can make in workoing at this, but do a couple more as you see fit and then if things aren't clicking some, we can look at some different nuances of high elbows and a more powerful pull. And I still owe you comments on your training plan! |

DOMS has usually settled in within 48-60 hours post-race, and you're now way beyond that. So, I think you dodged that nasty little bullet.....and maybe you've goyt what it takes to do amarathons with impunity. Wouldn't THAT be nice! Enjoy Australia! Lynn is loving it, and after 10 days on Tasmania they got to Melbourne two days ago nd are now driving west on the Great Ocean Road (I think that's the name). It's the one that goes to Adelaide, but they won't make it all the way. Have fun.................and if you see Lynn, tell her to hurry home! |
