Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by trigal38 Originally posted by strikyr Dina I don't see why you couldn't put the hybrid on the trainer. They do have tires specifically made for the trainer. Not sure what size you'd need but you can look into that for your hybrid. I'm sure the next question will be why you are getting the pain and soreness in your hand when you ride the tri bike. That one I'd leave to the experts here. Size would be good info right? 700 x 38 so they are big heavy tires. The pain in my hand/elbow - who knows. I'm old and falling apart, that is what the problem is LOL! Dina I took a quick look and I don't think they make a trainer tire in that size however reading on one of the message boards it looks like you could use a 700x23 depending on the size of your wheels. Again I'm no expert but it sounds like others have done this as well. As far as the hand/arm pain I doubt it has anything to do with you being old and you are far from falling apart. I'm sure our resident bike experts might be able to offer some insight on that. |

I can't figure out how to search on BT since the changes so I've been searching the internet but keep reading conflicting info. It does sound like I can go a lot narrower than what I have on there now so I'll see if I can figure out the wheel size tomorrow. I'm getting a tire education that is for sure! |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I wasn't able to go over to Warsaw last night to see Brenda on the run. Things just weren't able to work out. First we picked up a table from a friend who was getting rid of theirs and it was free. (Laiken needed one for the apartment she is sharing with 3 other girls.) As I'm loading the table she calls me and needed to take a kitten to the emergency vet, so no taking the table to her then. Long story short, the kitten died. When we were finally able to take the table up to Laiken it was far to late for me to be able to head over that way. The good news is that I was getting the texts from Brenda's friend Karen and her daughter, so I was keeping up with her pretty closely. Truth be told, I was probably annoying Tennie with my questions about how she looked, how her foot was doing, etc. I knew she had struggle late in the bike and I became worried. I knew it could be pretty devastating if she were on the wrong side of calorie intake. I'll allow her to finish the rest of the story. I don't want to be the spoiler, But I did wake to some text messages this morning and I was able to smile...............Very largely!! |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Ok, I need to share this somewhere...... My friend I was telling you about who bought my road bike and is going to do the tri at our local Y, she has an online coach. She pays the coach and he gives her workouts but then she asks me to meet her to swim or ride to help her. Which is fine, I don't care at all except I don't think they have very good communication. The latest is he wants her to go for an easy ride but he wants her to ride for 1 hr 15 min and 22 miles. She figured that to be 18 mph average. Our ride together last time she averaged 14 mph. Something does not jive here. But I am keeping my mouth shut! I'm also helping my marathon friend find swim workouts and drills to help with her stroke and another newbie with open water swimming. All for free while they pay someone else. My husband thinks I should just start charging . |

Dina you actually could but I would have to say I was in the same position as your friend and if it were not for the generosity of more experienced people like yourself I would have never, ever gotten to where I am as quickly as I have. If these guys did not pay it forward and help me out I'd still be trying to figure it out. I think it's great that you've gone out and helped your friend and I look for opportunities to return the favor and be able to do the same for someone else. That is why the triathlon community is so awesome. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Good Morning Asphalt Junkies! Got it done yesterday - 15 hours 28 minutes! Thanks for your support and well-wishes. Two of the greatest things about the day: 1) My hubby pulls up in the boat and he has on a black T-shirt that says "My Wife Rocks" in big white bold letters and my kids have on a "My Mom Rocks" T-shirt. They kept that as a surprise and it brought tears to my eyes from feeling their love before I even started a single mile. 2) I'm on the dock getting ready to put on my goggles when I turn around and see DIRK! My heart took the biggest leap and I gave him the biggest hug! I was blown away that he would spend his morning driving out to see me. My oh, My, how could I not give it my best and finish this thing having the support of a truly incredible friend?! He came and brought what this group represents and it blew me away. Thank you so much. I have to work out the splits and process some thoughts on the day but just wanted to check in so you knew you all had an impact on making the day a success. Sending a grateful hug to each of you!

Congrats Ironman! You did awesome Brenda. I could not help but think about you guys all day yesterday and wonder how you were all doing. Thankfully Dirk posted some updates through out the day so we had an idea of how you were doing. I'm so happy for you Brenda and for your friends that you were able to safely finish the event. Now that you've done this Wisconsin is going to be a peice of cake with a year's worth of training behind it. Now you don't have to worry about finishing you need to only worry about gettting faster LOL! |

I had some help in getting to the proper start site the night before. I messaged Tennie on FB and asked where the swim began so I wasn't wondering around looking for all of you. I knew you would enjoy seeing me before the start and I didn't want you to miss the emotional boost you'd receive when you saw me. Spending the morning over there, I would have loved to spend more time. I really enjoyed seeing all of you out there trying to get 140.6 done without a big amount of crowd support, sag support, etc. and I would have liked to have done more, I simply couldn't do it. I enjoyed the updates from Karen and Tennie, although I would have liked to have gotten more bike updates. In order to get some updates from Tennie I messaged her, again on FB, and gave her my cell number so she could text me. It worked very well for her to get me some messages. She kept me up to speed on your physical appearance and condition so I could kind of do my own assessments on how well you were doing. I also enjoyed meeting your "real" husband. Not the one you always talked about but could never provide proof of true existence. Curtiss and I talked about my job and the energized helicopter work that can be done power lines. I let him know that i had done it once. Maybe you could show him a few of the old pics that are on my FB if he has the interest to see them. Rider also seemed a little interested in this conversation too and might like to see the pics. (That is the highlight of my carrer BTW. I loved doing that!) |

Sounds like it was a really tough day out there........ Dina- I did follow the thread and the weather. I lived three hours away (in Mammoth Lakes) from Tahoe for several winters when I was a competitive snowboarder. Rarely does weather like that blow in this early. Rarely. My plan for next year is to fly in at least a week prior and spend a week in Mammoth Lakes, which is a little higher in elevation. This post in the BT thread has me concerned and I am wondering if I need to change my bike setup-- "Being a local, it never occurred to me that people would attempt Brockway without a triple crank and a 28 in the back. I tried it on a 39/52 once and turned around about halfway up. That climb is the real deal." |

I tried it on a 39/52 once and turned around about halfway up. That climb is the real deal." Congrats on signing up. Short answer from my perspective - yes, get at least a compact and a 28 for Tahoe. And there's no shame in a triple with 30 smallest front ring. I think anyone not going sub 5:00 IM bike splits, should be riding any IM with a compact and at least a 25, if not larger, in the back. IMFL, IMAZ and Texas maybe not, but only maybe. There is no advantage to riding at 70 rpm or less pushing up the hills in an IM. For mere mortals, an IM is not really a race on the bike; it's an exercise in self control. I think way too many people ride these big gears because we all want to pretend we're Cadel and need to top out the 53/11 and get that last 5 mph bombing down hills. Do we really need to keep pedaling when we're going 35+ mph in an Ironman? IMO, no is the answer if you are going to go slower than a 5:00 IM, and probably even then it's a no. Too many long course races are destroyed by hammering too hard on the hills, and too many triathletes have big egos which require big front chain rings. Ok, that's my short version/soap box bike gearing discussion! |
