Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() anybody gonna ride or run virtually with me tomorrow? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have 30-35 mile ride tomorrow morning if it doesnt rain, heading out about 7am. See you virtually there! |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll be riding around 6am PST... I'll virtually ride with anyone... but I'll probably be pretty slow since I'm doing mostly hills... |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diane - you and I rode together today...I had quite a few hills too. No, Texas is not all flat. I will be happy to share profiles with anyone who questions me......LOL. Gary - I think you were finished before I hit the road. I got out about 8 - lollygagging thinking about riding 4 hours..... Big brick today of 4 hour ride - about 63 miles and then a 2.5 mile run....ooooohhhh that run was FUN....this IM plan is pretty cool but also intense. The ride today had 2 x 15 min intervals at a Z4-5 effort. While that doesn't sound like much when you know you have ridden over an hour and will have 2 more hours after the intervals, it really makes you think. Wildlife today included a deer running across the road about 15 yards in front of me and then jumping a barbed wire fence - this was very very cool. Second wildlife sighting was a snake cruising across the road - I hit his tail and then carefully looked at my wheels to be sure he wasn't up in the spokes....I saw him too late to totally avoid him. Then there was all manner of road kill - deer, possum, skunk and even a stalking buzzard (big sucker too) looking for something to eat. Dr. Seuss had it right - Oh, the places you'll go. Now the taper is on for the Austin Triathlon on Monday. It should be an interesting day with the fatigue in my legs..... sTRIve |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LRR - congrats on the ride (and not getting taken out by the wildlife)! Got in 33 miles today. Rode with a buddy from work. Nice cruise for me but pushed him some. He is young and athletic and won't be long before he is blowing past me. Afterwards ran into a weird thing as I was cleaning the chain. My cassette was loose as if one of the spacers was missing. Posted on BT, RWTF, then KathyG posted about running into this and just reassembling it. Sure enough it worked, now why it came loose to begin with I don't know. I have been hearing a bit of rattling but thought it was my pump. Beginning to think that it was caused when I hit the armadillo. The nice this is that I learned how to disasemble a cassette, clean it, and re-assemble. As a bonus I have a sparkling clean cassette! Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary - mechanic capabilities are admirable....hitting an armadillo...priceless. The Austin Triathlon today was cool. Non-wetsuit swim....that was nice. Bike was in downtown Austin with the state capitol in the background. Run was HOT....HOT....HOT. My plan today was to cruise the swim, take the bike easy and save something extra for the run....mission accomplished. And I felt great after recovering for a few minutes.... Then Debbie and I went over to Taylour's apartment and hung out with her for a couple of hours before coming home. Next up - the PrairieMan half ironman next Sunday....I hope it is cooler. sTRIve |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LRR - congrats!!! Good luck next weekend. Okay, pulled a bonehead, cut three fingers with a saw blade today. Not stitches material (DW is a large animal vet and researcher, she checked it out well, refused to let her take my temp as I know where she puts it!) but good gashes. Was going to swim tomorrow but think I will hold off until Weds to let it heal. Any recommendations on how to cover the fingers, liquid bandaid, surgical glove? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary RM - LMAO. Good morning all. Hope you had a good long weekend. Feels like New Years day today with the start of school. Son (Chris) has is first class at UNB today after a week of Orientation activities. Daughter Stephanie returns tonight from her 2 week visit to Ottawa. She returns to UPEI on Saturday with classes starting next Monday.I managed to get out for a 40k ride on Saturday and a 5k run yesterday. I've been pretty inactive of late so was suprised that both felt quite comfortable. Pool reopens today so planning a swim at lunch time.Weather has been lovely b-man. Evenings are cool (around 5-10c) but daytime highs are often in the 20-30c range. Leaves are already starting to change colour though so really cool temps aren't that far off.Have a great week y'all.FBP Edited by FreddyBeachPete 2009-09-08 4:25 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a HUGE issue... I know this is trivial... but... I figured I'd give you all something to laugh about - I'm such a girl... ok, the issue... I only have 1 tri top that I've been training with, well, last Saturday, somehow, I got all kinds of bike grease all over the front of it... It looks like someone just road right over me... the stain did not come out in the wash... How can I wear this on race day? It'll look AWFUL in the pictures! However, if I get something new, I won't have time to practice in it... what to do, what to do... If this is the worst thing I have to worry about, I'm doing ok - right? ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone. Remember me? Got married. Got promoted. Disappeared from the site. Sorry. I've been training but after I finish I just jump into the day. Have gotten out of the habit of logging it or discussing it. Gary assures me when I settle into the old married lady routine, I'll be back. It's been five months and I'm still overwhelmed. Oh well. Training/racing update. My ride is this weekend. I'm doing the short course. It's only 63 miles. I've done that distance at least four times, so I should be fine. Not fast, but I'll finish. Unfortunately the person who I'm riding for passed away last week, so this ride will be done in honor of her memory. We leave tomorrow. We're turning it into a mini-vacation. In other news marathon training has peaked. Did 22 miles on Monday. Feel fine today. So I should be good to go for the 26.2. It'll be another case of not fast, just finish. That's all I want. I realized I'm not a competitive person. I'm content just being an active person. ![]() Since neither of these are "races" as far as I'm concerned, I doubt I'll do a race report. Not one for the forum anyway. But next time I log on I'll let you guys know how both went. Oh and Diane, congrats on signing up!!! You'll be fine. You are more than ready for your first tri. You're 100x more ready than I was, and my first tri went great. You are going to ace this thing. It goes by sooo fast. Relax and enjoy it. As far as the wardrobe goes, wear what you have. Don't worry about the pics. I have yet to take a good race pic, esp in the tri. After a swim cap and a bike helmet, my hair is always a mess. If you're really worried, you can always cover up with a t-shirt in T2. Have fun!!! Gotta go. Don't know when I'll be on again. So take care all. Happy training. |

![]() | ![]() So many issues here.... Gary, you can try to cover your fingers with tegaderm ( you can get it at CVS but its expensive). Its a clear breathable bandage that does pretty well in the water. As far as your cassette goes, PM Kathy G. She loves to talk bike and is very knowledgable about how to fix stuff. Dianne...wear the top, try cleaning the grease with Dawn or Oxyclean...both of those do a great job on grease. If you get a new top, just wear it around for a day and make sure it feels ok. You are going to ROCK!!! Try to relax...I feel your anxiety. I get like that before races Bryan, a HIM this weekend...YIPPEE!!! I want a full report. No times for last weeks race. ![]() |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Waef - welcome back....no RR is fine but we will expect a race paragraph. I don't know that any of us RACE - we do - that is it - we do. Gary - fingers....hmmm......we my earlier comments about mechanic ability might have to be rescinded. I am a big fan of New Skin - kind of a liquid bandaid....smells like fingernail polish which it may very well be.....it will sting like a mudda but it seals it up. Sorry about the cuts.... FBP - welcome back to the training life....by the way - no tuition is a wonderful state to be in....hopefully you will get to join me soon....I love having a college graduate. Diane - try ZOUT - it is great for stain removal....that's from my dear wife who puts up with me....she's a saint....that said - if you wear a new top around for a few hours....maybe get a quick swim in - it won't be new on race day so you won't be tempting the race gods....NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY....but that doesn't mean it all has to be OLD....it can be a couple of hours old if it is a tri top....Please disregard Gary's nasty comments...he is obviously on some type of pain medication....LOL....however this kinda equates to MAV's butt stories last year....you can search our archives or maybe she will tell the story again.....MAV?????? Go enjoy your race....you are ready and you have earned it.....take it all in. Mav - time was 3:09....treating everything now as training and only training....pacing in line with IMAZ pacing....really try not to overcook the bike so I have something left for the run....swim was 35-36, bike was 1:15-1:20, run was 1:00-1:05 with about 6 mins in two transitions...there was quite a bit of distance in and out of transition....there were over 2500 participants...it was really cool....Here's the brief report....swim was a cruise...caught a little draft and hung on it for a while - focused on form a bit, counted strokes, etc....really pleased with the "straightness" of my swim. Worked through T1 - it is so dry here that the little bit of water on your feet and the dirt made for nasty mud in the bike shoes....with rocks and all sorts of other stuff. Rolled out on the bike - focused on pacing and nutrition (these were the absolute needs of the day - practice for Arizona). Rode what I thought was a smart race which was actually pretty fast (for me). Rocketed through T2 and out on the run - legs felt really good (well done on the bike power consumption) but I had overdone the calories - I took in about a half a bottle too much which is 150 excess calories - doesn't sound like much but I think with the volume of liquid it filled me pretty full. After a couple of miles the stomach felt better....I was not hungry through the race after about 1/3 of a bottle on the run. Run was good - had a fun finish with another guy in my age group - I passed him with about 1/4 of a mile to go and held him off. I finished ahead by 10 seconds - that was a fun way to end the race. I was also very pleased with the lack of recovery time needed. I felt great Monday afternoon and after a day off Tuesday was ready to train again today. Long run tomorrow and HIM this Sunday.... sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't believe tomorrow is the 12th!!! ![]() I went to pick up my packet last night as they had a convenient West-Side pick-up for people who live on the west-side... I pick-up my packet, and went and did some errands... I was putting some stuff in my trunk and decided to look in the envelope in the packet - it was EMPTY! ![]() ![]() I emailed them this morning, and got an auto response to refer to the website - GEE THANKS! ![]() Oh yeah... my swim cap is messed up too! It's double printed on one side, and no printing on the other side...which actually confirms to me that they were having problems with their printing... I want a new cap though Anyway, IF I get my bib, I'll be wearing #407 tomorrow... sorry for the long post, I've gotta get it off my chest - yes, you can chalk it ALL up to pre-race jitters ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() by the way, I soaked my Tri Top in coke overnight... a tip from someone online... the stain is still there, but it faded a bit... so I'll wear it... I went shopping to look for a new tri top, and can't find anything I like... I may get a 1 piece, but not for THIS race... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Metric century ride done. It was way easier than I thought it would be. Had a blast. Raised money for a good cause and had a ton of fun in the process. Best of all it gave me something to do that took my mind of 9/11. We both lost friends in the World Trade Center and every year at this time I get really depressed and have a hard time snapping out of it. But this year I was so focused on the ride that neither one of us spent much time dwelling on that horrible day. DH said it was the first year that he gave himself permission to be happy on that day. That's when it struck me. Life does indeed go on and this ride was a wonderful way of recommitting to those still living and still in need of our support. Every year, from now on, we plan to do something during this week to reach out and help others. To embrace life and embrace the living. It's what our friends would have wanted. That alone made the ride more than worth it. Going into this ride, I was seriously overprepared. I did the distance four times just to be sure I could handle it. Piece of cake! Felt nothing. Like I went for a leisurely stroll. There's nothing to recover from. I guess that means I could have gone faster but 14 mph on a mtn bike for 100 km is not too shabby IMHO. Next up: first full. I've overprepared for that too. Did 22 miles just to be sure I can handle it. Plan topped out at 20 but we're going on vacation right afterwards and I don't want to be tired or hurting. Now I know I'm ready. Going to enjoy tapering and then take it nice and easy on the course, just out having fun. A friend is doing it with me. She's walking it and I will walk with her for at least half. It's going to take us all day but we don't mind. It's going to be a blast! Will let you know how it went. Take care all. Happy training. Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats Diane!! Congrats WAEF! Finished my Tri, RR to come but very slow swim but I felt fine, sighted okay, and didn't have to stop to rest, no swim demons! Ride was wet, rough, and not very fast (although sections I did cruise around 19-20), run was 10 mm to start and ended around 9:30. Stood in line for a massage afterwards, very nice lady who promptly beat the living daylights out of me. I thought massages were supposed to feel good? Kids have pony club, I have 15 bales of hay to unload then load the horses, etc. No rest for the weary. Later! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CONGRATS WAEF & GARY!!! |
|
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 4 finish lines posted....great job WAEF, Gary and Diane.....wow - wonder where Mav and FBP were this weekend.....they were on the couch I guess..... WAEF - I am in the investment business and also lost friends on 9/11 - also have many, many friends who survived - we had a large office in 7 World Trade - the survivors as you know are traumatized to this date - I talked to many of them last week just as support and I really don't think any of us will ever be the same. On the other hand, I LOVE your idea of doing something each year to honor those lost by helping the living. A great idea! I believe I will share in that idea and share it with others as well. Thanks for sharing it. Gary - can't wait for the RR. My half - let's just say I am still wet....it rained for three days before the race...a four and a half hour drive to Dallas took Debbie and I 7 hours due to the rain. It rained all day Friday and Saturday as we were running errands trying to find some rain gear to use as we didn't really plan for rain on Sunday - the forecast was for a 20-30% chance of rain. The hour by hour forecast showed the rain in the afternoon and evening. Well, they lied. It was raining at 4:30 when I woke up, raining at 5:30 when I arrived at the race site, rained for the WHOLE race - hard enough during parts that reminded me of hurricanes, tropical storms and tsunamis, you could actually feel the rain during the swim. The swim felt LONG - my time was 51 minutes. There were white caps and big waves throughout - really we started in pretty flat water and about three minutes into the swim I thought a power boat was going back and forth in front of me. The waves were that big. I thought they would be a big help after we turned the corner but they were actually quartering you so they were pushing you further out into the lake so you had to swim back in to fight their effect. There was some feel of body surfing which would have been good if it had been in the right direction. Did I mention it was still raining? T1 was pretty slow - about 4:20. The bike was treacherous with flooded streets and HUGE puddles - when someone passed you - you virtually drowned in the spray off their back tires....while it didn't happen much (ha-ha) it was wet....they cut the bike short in the pre-race meeting due to the conditions - they said they didn't want people to try for a PR or for people to take chances on the bike - I saw several people down and almost went down three times myself....once really close - my back tire was sliding right and left and I really don't know how I saved it - I think it was just luck and instinct - there was NO time to think. As I finished the third loop of the bike, I actually was thrilled to be going to the run - I was very tense the entire bike. The bike was 42 miles according to them...just under 44 according to Mr. Garmin. Bike time was 2:26 for a 17.2 avg speed assuming 42 miles. Extrapolating to a 56 miles ride would have been about 3:15. T2 - Did I mention it was still raining??? EVERYTHING WAS WET - my cycle shoes were full of water, my socks were soaked, I looked like a drowned rat - How about this? When you bent your head down on the bike, water had collected in the air vent holes, trapped against your scalp and it just ran out all over you, it was like you dumped a glass of water on your head. I had kept my run shoes in a plastic bag so they went on dry...that lasted about 4 seconds....I had another pair of dry socks in a zip lock bag....again they were dry for about 4 seconds....grabbed the hat and off I went...T2 was 3:07. I wanted to try to run a good half marathon - I usually fry myself on the bike as you know, and then just survive the run....well yesterday was a bit different. I ended up running a 2:25 half marathon....just 10 minutes off my half marathon personal best. I felt GREAT....used Galloway's run/walk method as always and was running past people in the last three miles. I didn't know how the run would go as my longest recent run has been 1:40....it went better than I could have thought....I was actually calculating and running scenarios through my head throughout the run trying to get to an eleven minute pace...I ran 11:06 pace....dangit....by the way, the last two miles were in a monsoon. Yes, it was still raining. By the way, less than a quarter of a mile into the run you ran through a puddle/river that was 4-5 inches deep and about 15 yards wide...splash...splash....splash...and your dry socks and shoes were full of water and weighed a lot more. Then, so you could continue the fun, for the next 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile there were several more unavoidable big puddles, then you came out of the park and on to the dam to run about 3.5 miles additionally out across the dam and back and then you got to do the three miles in the park again....complete with puddles....with new additional puddles and depth as ---- all together now --- it was STILL raining. As I was walking to the truck dreaming of being dry, a person walking by Debbie and I asked if it was my most miserable day in triathlon - after thinking a bit I told her it was actually a pretty good day...yeah, it was wet, yeah, it was trying, yeah, it was mental, yeah, it would have been easy to quit or not start....but that is not what we do. We deal with what comes - and we adapt and improvise. We realize transition times are not so important that we can't use ziplock bags for a moment of dry sock feeling. We realize that we are fortunate that not EVERYONE in the world thinks we are crazy for wanting to play in the rain. We also realize how important those around us are in a new way. Debbie was there - all day - she stood soaked to the bone - she was outside from 5:30 until almost 9 for the pre-race stuff, the swim and T1...then she sat in the car, tried to sleep, read a magazine and was back outside as I left the park on the run (she missed me coming in on the bike as we didn't think I would ride that quickly given the circumstances), went back to the car for about 1:45 and then came out to get wet and watch me finish. She was a trooper yesterday and in addition to Sherpa Deb duties had to deal with a lot of wet crap to try to get home. I would like to say that there were about 100 spectators or so there yesterday (that is a wild guess but there weren't many). Each of those people deserve applause. They did NOT have fun. Also, there were volunteers who stood in the rain to hand out water and Gatorade Endurance - I tried to thank as many as I could but I would like to go on record saying a BIG THANK YOU to each of them. To the race organizers, they did a great job with what they were dealt. It was a well run race and I would do it again, hopefully dry but I would do it again. Overall time was 5:51 - I was very pleased. Adding in the additional bike time would have been about 6:36 or so....that would have been a PR for me by a long shot. I felt great about the time and also about the recovery so far. I feel pretty good today, will be back in the gym tomorrow. See you at the finish line, Bryan |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LRR - Congrats, nice job in bad conditions. Kinda know what you went thru although it wasn't quite that bad here. Great RR! Still waiting for the bike splits to be posted, right now T1 and the bike time are combined. I will post my RR tonight. My swim was slow but I finished it without taking a break or using a kayak. Actually the swim felt good, fairly comfortable the entire time. My best OWS yet (even adding in practice OWS'). I really need to figure out why I am slow. I think I am going to find someone with a waterproof video camera and video my stroke. |
