Did you sign up for one yet? Smile

Not yet, but I'm putting my name on the volunteer list the day it opens so I can sign up for IM the day after the race. I used to think they were all crazy and would NEVER do a race like that. Yeah, didn't last. Now I can't wait. Each time I watch I want to be out there doing instead.

Coach - welcome back! Smile I am bummed we didn't get to meet also.   I can't even imagine how you were feeling Sunday but your determination is truly inspiring.  Hope your hammies heal quickly! Laughing

I can't believe how many volunteers were in line that early in the morning.  And for the record, the only reason I was in line that early is b/c my friend had to return the rental car in the city by 11! Haha! To be honest though, I'm glad I got there early...the line was HUGE by 7!

Good Morning Team.

I am signed up for a half marathon on September 25 here in my home town and am thinking about entering the Detroit Half Marathon on October 15th. I need some advice from everyone - I don't know the running game that well and am wondering if that is a good idea or not? What are the effects on the body I should be worried about if any? Good or bad idea?

Thanks Team.

Just caught up from page 100.  Holy cow!  Sounds like an eventful weekend for everyone, especially our racers.  Congratulations to all of you on putting your best efforts out there.

Did a 7mile run in San Francisco this week--was there for a conference.  And. It. Felt. Great.  Starting to think maybe I can do this whole half marathon thing after all.

Also read "Once a Runner," not sure if anyone else has.  Talk about motivation.  I know it's fictional, but the kid was putting in 140 mile weeks to train for a one mile race.  Geez.

Happy thursday to all!

I loved that book.  Even now, thinking of the the scene where he does the sets of 400's alone after his coach leaves him gets me pumped up to go do a workout.

Glad your running is becoming more comfortable.  Pass your secret onto KC Laughing

I'm glad I'm not alone!  The closer I got to the race at the end of the book, the more my heart started pumping.  Seriously, my HR got into the 90s just reading it.

Guess some of it was old track flashbacks of my own.  "First call for the one mile!!!"  Still makes me jittery.

Kc- I think it depends on how you race the two races.  I think you would be ok if you use the first one as training run then really push yourself on the second one.  Three weeks is pretty close together to put two "A" efforts together without risking some type of injury.  And the last thing you want is a nagging injury as you are getting ready to start your IM training in a few months.  But then again it is all dependant on how you feel.  I am a total freak on trying not to get hurt so someone else might have an opinion that you would have no issues at all.  Running beats you up.   Just use your own judgement and listen to your body and you will be fine.

KC - What I do for my half marathons is run to the water station, grab a cup of water at the first table, drink it as I walk through the station, and then start running again.  The water stations are usually about two to three miles apart, so it's a nice little break on the legs.

OK - so here is the Don Fink Competative Ironman plan in a format that can be uploaded to the Beginner Triathlete Training Log.  Just go to the bottom of the spread sheet and eneter your race date and it will update.  The default right now is IMWI for 9/9/2012.

Thanks to Brian for sharing this plan.  I was also able to find all swim workouts on someone elses calendar online.  That is the only complaint I have heard about this program is the swim but I think I am gonna try it.

Looks like I will be starting "official" training on February 13.

**UPDATE** - It uploaded really easy.  Just make sure that if you do use it you only choose up to week 30 and not 31 and put your race date in the BT form not start date.

Good Morning TEAM RFP Cool

I am slowly recovering from my injury...but at this point I think I am still going to race this weekend Undecided

Coach good to see you check in.....Words can not express what I think of all of you that have participated in an IRONMAN.  OKAY maybe one word "WOW"

my training this week has been only biking but I may try to run a little today!  I am still working on my race report but looking back I am very happy with my performance (times were okay/average for me) and my run was good even though it hurt with every other step! Embarassed

Hope everyone had a Great week and enjoy the weekend Innocent

I am playing a huge show tonight right in downtown Chicago at the Federal Plaza for Berghoffs Oktoberfest.  Should be awesome.  Last year there were over 1500 people.  It was like torture last year with all that great beer, bratwurst, apple Strudel and all I could have was water, apples and a banana!  I actually played the show til 10pm then jumped in the car and drove 10 hours to Branson for my 70.3 race.  Pretty dumb now that I look back on it.

Wish I was able to go to Branson again this year to defend my 520th place.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

KC - I bought Don Fink's Book this weekend and it helped explain the plan in more detail.  If you think you are gonna try that plan I recommend getting the book.

The show was awesome on friday. Started out with a big scare though! While we were sound checking Josi wanted to run to Starbucks to get some coffee and asked if I could keep an eye on the kids.  I told them to stay put behind me on the stage (they love being on the stage).  I was being asked something by the sound guy and after a couple minutes I looked and did not see Sophia (4 yrs. old).  I asked my son Evan where she is and just shrugged and said he didn't know.  I ran around the stage area, in front of the stage, into the fest and did not see her.  Keep in mind this is at 4:00pm right smack downtown Chicago with the sidewalks FULL of people.  The steps off the stage were literally 10 ft. from the sidewalk.  I had two fears - 1) she walked down Adams street looking for my wife or 2) some wacko grabbed her and she was gone.  I was sick to my stomach  I ran up on stage and took my mic and started calling her-nothing. If you've seen the movie Ransom it was just like that.  My friend out in the crowd saw the panic in me and ran over.  He said he was gonna go look for her down Adams.  I was standing with a security guard and doubled over almost about to puke.  I just went into shutdown mode.  After what seemed an eternity(but was probably 2-3 minutes) my friend called and found her with Josi.  My wife had decided to take her with and didn't even tell me!!  I had so much emotion that I literally started crying right there at Adams & Dearborn.  Josi said all the color in my face was gone and I felt my heart rate was maxed.  f cannot imagine how people must feel when their kid is actually taken.  Sick.

I then had to go on stage 15 minutes later and entertain 1000 people-haha.  But it turned out to be a great show and just glad my daughter is safe.

It is funny - After these big shows with a big stage I get such a good workout.  My calves are KILLING me and I am limping around the house this morning -a day and a half after the show!!!

Enjoy your Sunday - Go Bears!!!

Hi folks,

I've been reading all the posts; wow - is this ever an impressive group..

My marathon training is still going.  I tried to run 18 miles last weekend; it was warmer than I was expecting, and I was overdressed; so I walked the last 8 miles (boo!).  Since then, however, things have been going much better. I had 3 great training runs and one (comedy of errors style) race this week.

My two mid-week runs (5 and 7.7 miles, respectively) were phenomenal.  I love the cooler fall weather, and it showed.  I was running faster and felt much stronger than I have in a long time. To top it off, I finished both runs wanting to go further (always a good feeling). Yesterday, I ran a 14 mile LSD (long slow distance) with my mom.  She hasn't been running as much as I have, so we slowed down quite a bit in the last few miles, but she got through it. With her permission (I hate abandoning people when I run with them), I sprinted the last 1/2 mile and it felt great.  I finished that run feeling like I could keep going, too.

Then, today, I ran the Army Run 5k.  I was about 15-18 minutes late to the start (a combination of leaving a bit late and forgetting that I wouldn't be able to park anywhere near the start line)Embarassed; crossed the start, had to hop over the rope being put up (to stop people from wandering into the start zone) and sprint to catch the police car that was sweeping the route (it kindly moved over to let me pass Tongue out).  The good news is that I have never passed so many people in a race before; the bad  news is that the chip company didn't pick up my start, and is showing my chip time as being the same as the gun time (which I know CAN'T be right).  I looked at my phone after I was across the start line, so I think I know around how much time to take off (which would give me a new 5k PR), but it would just be a guess.. The whole race was "off" for me, though; I couldn't get my jacket to stay nicely around my waist, had to stop and re-tie my shoe with 500 metres to go, etc.

Post-race, I went to a lovely hot yoga class and then bought the shoes that will be travelling to San Francisco to run 26.2 fabulous miles with me in a month's time!

Tim - NOTHING is more scary than when you can't find your child. Nothing. The fear that it brings is unlike any other.  Glad she was safe and sound. Phew! Nice job with your show too.

Hi Heather, good luck on the run next month.

So, I had my last tri of the season today. (where the heck did the season go anyhow??) It was pretty bad. actually it was ust the swim that was bad. It was ocean and choppy, I was drinking salt water each time I tried to take a breath. I was MISERABLE and vowed I would NEVER do a longer distance than a sprint in the ocean again. I hate salt water. The rest of it was so so. I was kinda dissapointed I only took 2 measly minutes off my time from last year and was 5/12 FrownGranted, I should have trained more but ggrrr.

Now I move on to execute my HM plan for Nov 6th.

Hope you're all having a good weekend. Did anyone else race?

Oh KC, I got Don Finks book from my local library to read through a while back. Loved it. I think it's the plan I will use for both my next HIM and my 1st IM. It seemed very well laid out and doable. I have heard really good things from others that have used it too.

Nice job on the long runs, if you have that problem again just do a walk run combo.  Run as far as possible then walk, I know people that can do that for a 10mm.   Make sure you put some miles on those shoes before your race, nothing worse than brand new shoes for a long run.  Good luck and keep us updated.

Hi guys just checking in after a few days away.  Just needed some time away from the sport after last week.  This actually could be a good thing as it has motivated me more than ever to have next years race (my final IM) be my best.  The other promising news is I met with a few docs this past week and were pretty confident we figured out what happen so I am ready to move on.  2/3 more weeks of rest and then I will go into high gear before it gets too cold.  Goal is to try and keep my base and improve about 15-20 watts before Jan 1.

So what does everyone else have planned for the fall?

Dave glad you were able to get some insight into what went wrong for you. That must be a huge relief. Once you know what causes a problem, we have some idea of how to fix it.  uummm Last IM? Are you retiring?

Does anyone use compression? I am thinking I'd like some either sleeves or tights. My calf muscles are crying out for something. If you use it, do they help? benefits? negatives? etc

As far as the rest of the year, other than my HM and getting my run speed up, I think I need to focus on weight. I weigh 16lbs (16??!!!Wth??)  more this september than I did last Sept at this same race. I know it would make life easier and faster, I just haven't had much luck with it so far. I feel stuck.

I survived another race.. Cool

This is my only repeat race this year compared to last year and I shaved almost 5 minutes off my time.

I finsished 109 overall out of 403.

The swim was rough as my wave was large---the whole swim I never got a rhythm going and was bumping people the whole time. I thought the swim was going to be slow but it ened up right where i thought I would be.

More coming in the race report.

Good Morning Team. I hope everyone is well.

Tim - sounds like a brutal and scary moment. Glad everyone is well.

Heather - nice job on the training - keep it up.

Deb - weird when the season comes to an end - I miss it terribly.

Coach - glad you may have figured out what the cause of your issues in the race were. I am looking forward to you dragging me through next year. Sorry to hear my first will be your last - what the hell you going to do when you qualify for Kona?

I am doing a half marathon next Sunday and training it going well. I am fighting the urge to run more than my plan is telling me to. I feel good right now and want to max my mileage but am tempering my enthusiasm to minimize the risk of injury.

I am also thinking about doing the Detroit HM on Sunday Oct. 16th. Here is the link for any of you in the area that may consider it - Coach, what do you think?

http://www.freepmarathon.com/half_marathon.htm

Have a great day everyone.

KC

Not retiring just need a break from the training and take it from there. The motivation my 1st race was through the roof then as injuries and the newness wore off I lost motivation the last few races.  Plus on an ego not I like to be good at things and I just don't think I can get competitive in my AG as in most races I would have to go sub 10 (some sub 9:30) just to make the top 10.

As for the compression I have pants and socks but rarely use them, I won't walk around in public with them on as we already look like dorks in our outfits I don't want to add to that lol.  I will say that the pants may have some effect as you do feel better after a night of wearing them (not sure if its mental or not)  I would go to Meijer/walmart and get some diabetic socks for $15 to see if they help, if so buy the expensive race socks or calv sock.

Good luck on the weight loss as it usually follows your training unless you eat a perfect diet.  Ramp up your miles and I'll bet the pounds melt away.  Hang in there you will do great at your HM.
