Nice racing Michele!

Kelly - looks like you had a fun time.  What a beautiful place, I've never been there.

The 5k swim yesterday was looooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggg.  I didn't sight very well, zig zagged a lot, but it was also long anyway.  I started out ok, was swimming steady, breathing well, then my calves started to cramp at about the half way mark.  So the second half I had my toes flexed forward most of the time, stopped a few times to work out the cramp, and my pace really slowed down.  Water temp was 80 degrees which didn't help.  But, I swam the distance which was my only goal.

We did a 53 mile bike ride after, and not starting until 1pm when it was hotter than heck made it not fun.  It was the same bike loop of the half iron I did last month.  There's a awful climb and steep hill at about mile 9, but even after you get over that there are long grinders.  I counted them yesterday, there were 11!

We saw cows, horses, ponies, donkeys, dead flattened snake, squirrels (dead & alive), sheep (cute little baby one too), and 2 hedgehogs.  Seen everything except the hedgehogs before, so that was exciting.

Thanks guys. I was too embarrassed by my swim to post anything. I had another panic attack when I got in the water. It was so cold. I really need a wetsuit for the buoyancy benefit. Any advice on swim anxiety?I was happy with my bike and run. Have you ever had a dog run out on a race course?? Crazy! Maybe it knew I was a vet!!Kelly- beautiful pics!!

No dogs, but I've had squirrels hurl themselves at me while biking, and a snake lift it's head up and hiss at me.  I did a race a few years ago and was on a fast descent when a cat came running out.  I swerved a little but realized I was not going to avoid it anyway.  I hit it (best guess is it ran between my front tire and frame) and almost wiped out.  Not sure if the cat survived as it kept going to the other side of the road and I kept going (in complete shock).  I do fear a dog running out though.

Whoo hoo got to train today.  Was going to train yesterday, but Cindy decided to see if she could still drink like she was in college on Saturday night.  The answer was a resounding no.  LOL.  So yesterday was spent dealing with the aftermath of that.

Did anyone see that info that Heather Wurtele was DQ'd at IM CDA yesterday?  Her crank broke on the bike.  Another athlete gave her their bike (she was in 2nd place) and she finished the bike and got 21 miles into the run and was pulled out and threatened with a 6 month suspension if she didn't comply because she received assistance. (you are not allowed any assistance, except from race people).

Funny thing was the bike she got was like she was riding a BMX bike it was so small ...

It is apparently a USAT rule that no athlete can receive any assistance, from anyone ... so then why was it OK for Chrissie Wellington to receive air cartridges from other athletes a few years ago in Kona?

Great job Michelle.

I think there's the letter of the law and then there's the spirit of the law. I know cycling is different but they have crews for the teams and if there's a flat or bike issue they swap it out on the fly. I have no issues with triathlon being this way.

A friend and I hit T2 during my HIM  the weekend before this one at the same time and started the run together. He got a mile in and realized he had forgotten to put gels in his fuel belt. I said no worries I have 4 on my race belt and 3 in my fuel belt so I have you covered. At mile three he started to fall off my pace so I turned and tossed him two gels before leaving. Should a USTA official having seen that DQ'd him? That absurd to me.

If it's not performance enhancing I don't see an issue with it. And by that I mean beyond the normal. Obviously gels will help your performance but they're legal so getting one off of another racer is not above and beyond.

BTW one racer at Patriot drew 12 minutes in penalties. Draft much?

I was just wondering what people thought.  I don't think the bike enhanced her race at all, but interesting how the lines are drawn. Had she known she would be DQ'd, she said she would've pedaled 1 footed back ... Just sucks, especially when she was having such a tremendous race.

It's always interesting where lines are drawn.  My guess is that some rules are more strictly enforced by different officials.  Happens in every sport really.

I was just answering your question and didn't mean it to come off as being confrontational towards you.

Hey folks been a little MIA this weekend. First congrats Michelle on your race this weekend! Scott Happy Anniversary (a little late, sorry). Kelly awesome pics and very jealous. I wish I had the fortitude to train as well as you on vacation haha!

As for the DQ. I have been an official at different sports and different levels and Scott is right it all depends on the official. We all have our pet pevs that we pay more attention to, just like different cops look more closely at certain violations than others. It really sucks she got DQ'd but I have learned that it is a good idea to learn the rules just like the officials if not better than them.

As for training...that sucked haha! I got in a session of insanity with my in-laws and kids which was a nice change to the training regiment. However Sunday was a lost. We hung out with a family friend of the wife's and stayed out way to late. Then after church we had to go and get fitted for her sisters wedding and all the shopping that goes with that. I did get to visit a Tri shop while in Raleigh though so that was about the hightlight of the day So hoping to start well this week. Just a small 30 min ride and run tonight.

I thought it was ok to have assistance from another athlete, but not spectators.  Maybe the assistance Chrissie received (CO2 cartridge) was considered ok because it wasn't a "piece" of equipment.  I didn't see or read anything about yesterdays DQ, but it seems silly to me to be DQ'd for another athlete gave her their bike.  I need to go read up on this to see what happened/when it happened.

I'm betting there is a delineation in that a co2 cartridge isn't part of the actual bike.  Apples to apples may be a competitor giving a hex wrench to fix the crank.  Still Welllington's bike, tube, wheel, etc.  Just handing over the bike is a bit of a jump from an air cartridge.

3200m swim this morning.  I felt strong the entire time with the exception of the kick sets.  Why am I so slow at those things? LOL My body feels incredibly fatigued now.  I am done for the day with tri training, but I may do some yoga this afternoon.

Speaking of swim fatigue.....My son started crying 45 minutes into his swim team practice last night (I wasn't there; my husband was) because he was so exhausted.  The coach told him to flip on to his back and kick.  She pulled my husband aside after the practice and said that he is so fatigued because he is holding his breath/isn't exhaling under the water.  I guess it's really common for his age group.  He's just to stick with it until it becomes natural.  My husband took him to the park after practice because he wanted to end Conrad's evening on a positive note.  No wonder the kids is tired - 8 hours of sports/day camp + 1 hour swim team practice.  I feel bad he cried!!!!!!

30 minute run this morning.  Muggy as all Hell.  Holding out hope I can get on the road instead of the trainer this evening.

Watched the Olympic Swim trials last night.  My girls were fascinated which is good because swim lessons will be starting soon.  I'm still debating really good and $$$$$ lessons at the really competitive place near us or laid back and cheap lessons at the neighborhood pool.  There is no in between unfortunately.

I would have said the opposite - start laid back and cheap to begin, then if they are really into it, transition to the competitive expensive place.

Any body have stretches where it is hard to work out mentally or physically? I have hit one the last three days...My mind says workout but my body is telling me otherwise. Some of it has been family things going on which has taken me way past my bedtime and 5am just comes way to early. So do I try to make up those workouts or just start on tomorrows and go from there...very frustrating especially not getting swims in. Hope everyone has a great day.

Yeah, I thought about it a little more.  It depends on what you want your girls to accomplish, Scott.  If it's water safety and general comfort in the water, then I'd go with the cheap ones.  If you'd like to encourage swim team/swimming for sport, then I'd go with the better lessons.  Madge is 5 (like your oldest) and she is swimming laps in the pool now.  She has done lessons at different places, but for the last 6 months we've been at the competitive swim club, and the quality of her lessons is amazing compared to some of the others she's done.  My older 2 have chosen swimming as their sport for now, so that's why we went with the competitive team.  I'm sure my "hobby" has something to do with this.  Plus, I started swimming competitively around 6-7 and wished I would have started lessons even earlier (crazy, I know).

I think we all have times like this.  I don't try to make up workouts anymore.  I don't miss many, but if I do, then they're just gone.  Better to just move forward, IMO.  Family always comes first...the training will always be there!
