Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by jenbmosley Originally posted by trigal38 Jenn, have you been following the IMLT thread in tri talk? Sounds like it was a really tough day out there........ Dina- I did follow the thread and the weather. I lived three hours away (in Mammoth Lakes) from Tahoe for several winters when I was a competitive snowboarder. Rarely does weather like that blow in this early. Rarely. My plan for next year is to fly in at least a week prior and spend a week in Mammoth Lakes, which is a little higher in elevation. This post in the BT thread has me concerned and I am wondering if I need to change my bike setup-- "Being a local, it never occurred to me that people would attempt Brockway without a triple crank and a 28 in the back. I tried it on a 39/52 once and turned around about halfway up. That climb is the real deal." Jenn x2 on what Warren said. If you go with a compact crank 50/34 and an 11-28 cassette you shouldn't need a triple ring. You will need to be climbing hills as part of your training. I'm not sure if you can manage it but if you can get out there and ride the course before hand that would be a big benefit for you assuming WTC doesn't change the bike course. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I'm not sure if anyone has signed up for the Endurance Nation newsletter but they are giving away a free ebook if you do. It's called Triathlon 2.0 building a proper season. I started reading it and it has some pretty interesting things in there. Some of them are just blowing my mind like no swimming during the out season. I just can't grasp that concept LOL but their argument makes sense. In any case if you have any interest in this just wanted to let you guys know about it. I also have the presentation and the audio file from this year's how to race IMWI. If anybody wants those I can forward you the email with the link for the downloads. These files are too big to email. I apologize for not mentioning this earlier I forgot all about it. I know Warren has mentioned he has used EN and I can say they were right on about IMWI and how to race it. They have an interesting perspective on how to train for long distance triathlon. |

However, after seeing the weather conditions this past Sunday at IM Tahoe, are you concerned about swimming and exiting the water with temps at 32 degrees for next year? I had seen a tweet that posted the current temp and hourly predictions for 5 hours beginning at the swim start. It was 32 degrees and it dropped from there a few degrees before coming up to a balmy 35 or so. NO THANKS!!!!! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by trigal38 Tony why no swimming during the off season? Dina I think the short of it from the EN guys is one there is little return on investment in swimming unless you are a beginner the gains made for intermediate and advanced swimmers are very minimal. Their perspective is your time is at a premium and the cost of swimming is high compared to that of biking and running. Their feeling is that you can better spend your time improving you bike and run as opposed to your swim. I sort of agree with them it makes sense. They feel that since swimming is very technique driven so if stop swimming you won't forget how to swim you just need to rebuild your swim fitness. You should read the ebook I have been reading it and I find it to be very insightful and interesting. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I just wanted to throw this one out to the group and see what you guys think. I am running a 10K on Sunday 11/17. I ran it last year and PR'd it and I wanted to try and do it again this year. This 10K is a 10 minute ride from my house right outside my hood. There is another 10K on Saturday 11/16 which is like right in my hood. I mean it is part of the loop that I bike down by the bay and marina. I'm thinking I just have do it! So do you guys think it is realistic to do both and could I maybe look to run one of them and race the the other one? Both courses are like pancake flat so I don't have to worry about any hills. They are both made for PR's. I'm thinking I could just run both and not worry about a PR, you just run for fun (yeah right!) or I run one and try and kill myself on the other. If I do that would it be better to try and PR the first one on Sat or just run that one easy and then try and kill the one on Sunday? Feedback would be welcomed and appreciated. |

Ok, in all reality I am hoping and praying that the freak cold weather front that happened last weekend does not repeat itself next year. I obsessively watched weather patterns there for 15 years and while an early cold front blowing in during September is not usual, it can happen two years in a row. I love the Sierra Nevada mountains and practically grew up in them. Something about attempting an Ironman at Tahoe tugs at my heart very differently than doing one anywhere else. |

For me, I would probably use Saturday as the warm up run and then go all out, way too fast on Sunday. |

Karl I'm getting there I feel a lot better and have been keeping my workouts at about an hour. I got 3 runs in last week of 5 miles and got a 35 mile bike ride in this past weekend. I should be fine for the 10K's. I really am not pushing myself hard and probably won't be for another week or two. As of now I'm just keeping it easy. |

And to be honest I didn't really swim all that much in comparison to the bike and run. Only Will is nuts doing all those 4 and 5K swims every week. And you definitely should read the EN v2.0 ebook. The more I read the more I like. I may try their approach to training for IMMT. I think I can train less, be more efficient in my training, have more time to dedicate to my family and do better this time around. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED JENN - I love how you describe that IM Tahoe "tugs at your heart". Congratulations on signing up and getting in - you're absolutely doing it at the right location. Although, you DO have a lot of moxie for still wanting to do it there after knowing what this year brought. I saw some photos of the swim and it made me cold just to look at but it sure was beautiful. What a year it'll be! DINA - way to pull out a PR on swim length...accidentally! TONY - I agree with Jenn - do both events if they both work in your schedule and you'd look forward to doing them. Knowing you, you'll PR both. Do you mind sending me the EN links that you mentioned? [email protected] Also, what was the video of the IMWI bike course that you've mentioned watching several times? WARREN - based on your comment you recommend a compact crank, right? Can you give me an idea of how much a new set-up would be? (I don't know all the components I'd need to change). Last week I had the bike shop check out my cassette and they said I can't go to a 11/28 with how my bike is currently set up. I have a 12/27 and a 53/39 something or other. I need to weight the cost/benefit ratio before I spend more $ on this wonderful sport. Oh, and to answer your question - no tattoo for me. I'm a wimp and couldn't stand the needles. So a couple general questions came about and I'll throw them on here: 1) What's the technique for drafting someone on the swim? 2) What is the best way to bike up a hill? (i.e. harder gear and standing or easier gear and spinning)
DEREK....JEFF....TRACY....(I think JONATHAN is lost altogether)....where are you guys? Hope all is well. |

I think doing both is a definite go. The first one, as you said, could be done to take in the sights and the second could be one to attempt another PR. Coming off IM training and the fitness and endurance you still posses that shouldn't really be an issue. I say go for it!! |

I have been able to significantly work my times down over the years by having some really long and really intense swim workouts, like the fast 50's. |

I have been able to significantly work my times down over the years by having some really long and really intense swim workouts, like the fast 50's. Yes I'm sure this was far more than I need and I found myself wondering why I was working so hard to finish this workout in September for heavens sake. What is the point? But I'm at that place where I am not making any noticeable progress so is this it or what will it take? I was kind of thinking the opposite of what Tony read from EN for this season. My schedule is more flexible than it has been with no little ones at home during the day and my back is better than it has been in the last couple of years. I think I could add another day of swimming this winter but will that actually help? What does it take for a MOP swimmer to actually make noticeable gains that translate to improved race times? More time, harder sets, both? And is it "worth" it? You know I have put in the consistent time on the bike and have improved a lot. I am at the same point with that as I am with swimming. Over the last couple of seasons I have PR'd in spite of the fact that my swim and run is slower, the only thing better is my bike so this leads me to think I should try working on something else. No comments on running as you all know how that goes for me. Just things I am pondering for the off season. |
