Way to go Gary and Bryan !!!

Not much for me to report. I was finally able to get to the pool yesterday for my first swim in over a month. Combination of being away, then the pool was closed for maintenance. Didn't swim far or fast but felt good to be back in the water.

Having now made the decision that a September race isn't in the cards, my race season is officially ended. I'm a little disappointed that I wasn't able to achieve my "stretch goal" of doing an Oly distance event but that just means it becomes my main goal for 2010 season!!

I am thinking that I will volunteer as a co-leader for one of the fall running classes, either the 10k group or the HalfM group. Should force me to get back to running a bit more. Still plan to swim a couple of times per week through the fall then come January I will start to increase that component. Riding right now is still great but won't be long (another 6-8 weeks I'm guessing) until Sebastian is back into the basement onto the trainer.

Tonight after work I'm going out to run 5k in remembrance of Terry Fox. Sunday the annual Terry Fox runs took place across the country but I was in transit from PEI to Fredericton so unable to participate in either location.

Have a great day y'all

LRR - actually I don't think there were any Olys in LA this year.  There is talk of an oly next year, if so I will seriously consider it.  We do have an HIM here but the more I think about it I am not sure I want to do one soon.  I would like to get faster at Sprints

Tried riding the trainer last night but after 5 miles I gave up.  My heart just wasn't into it.  Swam a little at lunch today to stretch things out and may run 1-2 miles tonight during sons soccer practice.  I have a 10 mile race tentatively for Oct 10th but will see.  My longest run this year has been 6 miles and will start pushing that up in combination with my riding.

Bryan - WOW what conditions! you did GREAT!!!

Now that the excitement from my first race has settled down (just a bit) I'm analyzing and re-analyzing my performance from the race (I can't help it, I'm an Analyst & a VIRGO)  anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid Shin pain on my runs after the bike?  Even, how to work on running after the bike... or is the answer truly - more BRICKS?

I was so MOP (of my AG) on the swim, bike & transitions... the run just literally killed my race... I am up to 7-9 miles on my long runs as I'm also training for a Half Marathon, but should I add in some speedwork? intervals? tempo's?

Next race is (maybe) in 2 or 3 weeks with my 'A' race in 5 weeks... Can I even fix anything at this late date?

Diane - I would be very careful trying to make major changes 5 weeks out from my A race.  Please let me know - were the shin pains evident in training runs (runs alone?), were they only off the bike? and finally, did your shins hurt when you just biked and then walked around the rest of the day????  I would say you may just need "rest" and that is not really likely when you are racing in 5 weeks.  I would focus on some stength training over the winter to strengthen the lower legs.   And the answer really is......more bricks.

Gary - too early to get on the trainer....keep riding outside when you can....the evenings are tough as it is getting darker earlier but the weekends with some milder weather is GREAT.....

FBP -  Season OVER?????  What???? It's WAY to early for you to be finished....find another race.....I love that training group you run with to do their race.....go FBP go....by the way, I think you went all year without posting a video............

Bryan, I suffer from chronic shin splints, but since working with my Active Release Technique Doctor, I haven't had any problems on my runs... good up to 9 miles!  So, it was frustrating to get them off the bike like that... I have done a few short bricks, and didn't have problems...I'll have to work more long bricks into my schedule over the winter...  Thanks!

Hey LRR!!

Most of my weekend is taking up with my son's soccer tourney in New Orleans.  Looks like I have another riding buddy.  Rode with him on Friday.  Didn't push too hard as we spent a lot of time yakking. Next week we are going to push for speed or distance.

Okay, folks, last night I spent an hour looking at NOLA HIM site, almost registered.  SOooo tempting.  It's in April, Wetsuit legal.  Should I?

Later all!

Gary - what the heck...you know you can do the swim.....I have actually been toying with coming to New Orleans for it myself.

Well folks, I went down today....took a corner about 200 yards from the end of the 65 mile ride and hit some gravel...nasty stop....so it's time for a new helmet - actually I was wearing a new one (my birthday present next weekend) and now it is cracked....my Garmin 310 shattered.....no longer waterproof.....and taking inventory of the road rash...knee, calf, hip, forearm, elbow and shoulder.....after 45 minutes in the ambulance they had me cleaned up, my shorts cut off (although I maintained some amount of modesty), checked out my head (the hardest part of my body) and then I was sent on my way.....do not have concussion symptons in the past 8 hours so I am feeling pretty good about the head.  The shower was !#^*($#ing ridiculous....OMG that hurt....finally got it all numb and was able to wash it out.....then some Neosporin and some dressings....wow....this crap hurts....  So I am bagging the run tomorrow, I will see how I feel when I wake up and then go for a short run at least.....it could have very easily been much, much worse.....

LRR - outch!!! So sorry to hear!  Bummer about the 310.  Hope you heal quick!

Back from DS' soccer tourney.  They lost one and won one.  If they win tomorrow they are in the playoffs.

B-man: OUCH !! Ever since mav's spill I have had the chinstrap on my helmet pulled just a little tighter. Glad to know that your helmet did its job. As you would tell any of us, take time to heal rather than pushing too hard through injury!!

Got out for a nice ride yesterday afternoon. It was ++++ windy but relatively warm.

Gary - did I read the thread correctly that you are now registered for a HIM?

Freddy - Yes, I am registered for NOLA HIM in April!

Son's team won yesterday and ended with two wins and one loss but it wasn't enough to get into the playoffs.  In all of the traveling lugging tents, etc around I messed up my back.   Managed a 6 mile run last night which loosened it up but this morning it is pretty tight.  Hopefully it will free itself up.

LRR - I agree with a wetsuit I could finish it comfortably.  Without one I could finish it but would be too run down to finish.  Luckily I have some time to get my bike distance up and improve my swim.

Diane - Congrats!!!!  You won't be DFL and you will have a great time!  Good luck!

Morning all.
I hear you on the wind Pete.....it seems like I am always riding into it. I just tell myself I will get stronger. A bunch of friends did Lobsterman this weekend and loved it! Maybe you should join me next year. They have a sprint and an oly.

Bryan, the road rash hurts to wash but as it heals it feels like someone put shrink wrap over it 'cause it gets so tight.

This weekend I volunteered at a local sprint that benefits a Neontal Intensive Care Unit. I was a swim angel. It was almost more fun than racing!!!!

Gary, Congrats on signing up for a HIM !!!!!You wont regret it

Tonight I did a brick, I deliberately stayed on a "harder" gear than normal to fatigue my legs a little - since I wasn't going very far (7.3 miles), then I came in and changed into my running shoes... I started out by walking [briskly] for 3 minutes - I felt my calves start tightening up, so I walked a little on my toes, and that stretched them out right away - then I started a run 1 min, walk 30 seconds - I continued til I got to 10 minutes total, then ran out the mile, walk 1 minute, then continued my run to 15 minutes...total 1.23 miles... my total pace was much faster than I expected it would be... THAT WORKED!! No shin splints off the bike!!! I'll try this during the race... hopefully to a successful tri

Diane - I love that plan of execution.  Now, STICK WITH IT.  It may be tough to take those early walk breaks but running at the end instead of suffering shin splints will be worth it....and I think it will help your time.

FBP - you should come to New Orleans.....Mav.....Diane....WAEF.....Gary's already in....maybe we LRR group HIM .... then have a little party on Bourbon Street.....who's in????  And, thanks for the advice...it is hard to sit here when I know I should be out training....three days off in a row....it has been a long time since I did that....

Mav - I agree....the pain of healing is great....I am getting these sharp pains from time to time as it heals....I think it is the pulling apart....OUCH!!!!  Showers REALLY hurt.

Gary - we will have you ready.  No worries....celebrate the entry.
