robingray_260 - 2010-08-22 10:13 AM So, I have been in somewhat of a dilemna lately.  new mountain bike vs. new road bike.  What I really want is a  new road bike.  However, my mountain bike (specialized rock hopper) is almost 20 years old and has NO suspension, while my road bike is only 6 years old and is in good shape - just a lower end bike (Fuji Finest). Unfortunately, don't have the $ to buy both. So, I am in the hunt for either a hard tail or full suspension mountain bike. Most likely a womens, since I need a shorter top tube.  Does anyone have any thoughts of brand/model that you like?  I am hoping to get a great closeout deal at one of the LBS, which may dictate the make and model. Maybe next year I can get that sweet new Felt I have had my eyes on!

I'm not a mountain biker so I got nothing here.  I have only been on a bike for the past year son I couldn't really offer much advice for a new roadie either.  Once I can afford a new bike it will be a tri-bike for sure.  Trouble is I will be paying for 2 girls to go to a parochial HS for 3 more years, so unless I hit the lottery it'll be a while.

Oh yeah? then they will be in college!  You won't be getting any financial relief for a while.

I have thought about getting a tri bike one day, but it will be in the distant future and I am not sure it makes sense for where I live.  I need my triple chain ring for all the frickin' hills/mountains.

Yeah I know, but we have an agreement.  By the time they are out of their early education we will have spent more than their college will cost.  we aren't going to leave them hanging, BUT they will be paying for the majority of their college bills.  Simply put HS this year is costing us over $15k plus any extra curriculars.  What's complicating this year is my wife's new job.  She took a new job a couple of months ago because she could no longer do 3rd shift and maintain her sanity, but her sanity cost us some money via a pay cut.  But I am not complaining, our kids are worth the extra cost and the pay off will come in a few years when we see the difference in their education and opportunities.

newbz - 2010-08-22 4:43 PM does anyone know johns last name? wanting to check and see how his race at timberman goes. as for the bike choice, tough call. I'm torn between the two right now as well, mtb would let me ride over the winter, commute in snow, etc. road bike would be more fun to train on + bike races (i say this like i have money for either)

I found this so far.

Bib     Name                              AG
2001 Gerbode-Grant Jonathan M25-29

Edit:
I found the overall results but I don't want to spoil ti for Jonathon.  It looks like a good race to me.  A heck of a swim for sure!

Was this his first HIM?  I think it is.  If so, it looks like a darn god first time race!

LOL...And I'm waiting for the day when all my kids are out of daycare. That's when I'll be rich. Guess if it's not one expense, it's another.

Hi everyone.   I did my last tri for the year yesterday.   Last year this race was my first tri and it took me 3:00:11 to finish.  Yesterday, I finished in 2:50 and some change - have to wait until they post the results for the change.   I'm pretty happy with the 10 minute improvement especially considering it was about 5 degrees hotter than last year.   Running in the heat just is not my cup of tea.    I'll post an RR once I get the details.

First things first.  Nice job Dan.  A 10 minute improvement is always a good sign. Lookin forward to reading the RR

J, sounds like a busy weekend.  I feel like I could sleep for 14 hours right now.

I almost turned  my road bike into a cyclocross for my ride on Saturday.  A contractor is installing a new water main on my course and it was raining when I left so I ended up riding right through the muddy road surface.  My bike was covered in dirt and mud.  When I got home though, I didn't even have the energy to wash it.  I ended up seeing a stranded cyclist who had blown a tube and couldn't fix it (I gave him my spare) and he asked me where in the workld I had been that my bike looked like it did.  It was pretty bad looking.

10 minutes is quite the improvement - especially with the heat!  awesome job - can't wait to read the race report! Do you have plans now that the season is over?

Nice job Dan!  Hard work really paying off!

So I completed my first HIM.  Not exactly the race I had planned or was expecting, but it's done and there is some room for improvement.  It was a great experience and I wouldn't trade it for anything.  Here's my RR if you're interested in some entertainment.

Jonathan- Awesome job! Great swim and great bike (considering your accident, you really lucked out-way to recover from that and keep going). Even though you didn't make your goal, you came pretty darn close. And that's awesome considering all the mishaps you had.

Tough breaks on the bike but you were able to gut through the pain.  I hope to be able to do as well as you in my first HIM in a couple of years.

I signed up for a local 10k race on Oct 3, but no other races after that.   My plan is to take a couple days off and then continue training.   I do have a couple of trips planned (Oahu in mid-Sept and Houston in early Oct) so I will get in some rest time then.

Thanks guys.  It was a tough day.  Very fun though.  I'm finding new bruises every hour.  For some reason the right side of my right ankle hurts like a mofo when I don't walk on my toes.  We'll see if that doesn't go away in a couple days and then take it to the doc.  My left shoulder feels like I pulled all the muscles in and around it, so that's fun.  Not sure how long I'm supposed to take off from everything, but it's going to be at least a couple days!

Yeah, those trispokes are pretty awesome.  I called HED and they told me to mail them the wheel and they'd evaluate it.  Worst case scenario it's going to cost me $350 to replace it through their "wheel replacement program", instead of the $800 to buy a new one.  Bell helmets also does a replacement program so I only have to pay $120 for a new helmet instead of the 175 I was expecting.  So I guess I really lucked out in a lot of ways.

amazing how well those helmets work eh?

Crash aside, your first half will take a lot more out of you than another a few months down the road would, and it'll take a few days 2-4 ) to be back walking properly and wanting to train.
5-10 days before the legs totally feel good again. as you get back into it, play it by ear, shorter easy workouts to start, jsut get moving, but dont push it.
The power on the bike will take longer than the other two to feel good going harder, thats normal, just pay attention to how you feel and dont push intensity until you feel ready.

As for adding the crash on top of that, good luck. assuming you didn't hurt anything badly, that stype of stuff normally stays sore for a week or so

Yeah, I don't think that I tore anything or broke anything.  I am pretty sure it's just all pulled muscles etc.  I feel like my body is one big bruise, I have a sweet one on the inside of my left leg that looks exactly like my fork, it's the same length and everything.  I have a bruise on the inside of my right thigh that is the size of my seat and one on my right side of my abs that looks like my stem or maybe an arm rest.  Pretty funny.  I'll try to get some pictures.

Jonathon - just read your RR for Timberman HIM - wow! glad you are ok!  I don't know if I could of kept going after that crash.  I greatly admire that! You would have crushed your 6 hour goal if it hadn't been for the crash. I guess there is always next time!

Speaking of crashes - mountain bike ride today was so much fun, but will be sore for the next few days.  3 crashes (one of them an endo), 2 skinned shins and a bruised shoulder. Hopefully it wont interfere with the BRIC I have planned tomorrow.

You got me thinking.....When should I plan my crash?

I scaled my ride back tonight.  My legs have been stiff and sore since the weekend's work outs.  I have ran 2 other days and during last night's 6 mile run my legs were burning for about 3 miles.  I am planning to keep my runs the same and my long bike the same (52 miles) but tonight 35 miles ride was backed down to 20 miles.  I did keep my intensity a little higher so I wouldn't lose the quality I was looking for in this ride.

Does anyone think I am over training?  My wife seems to think I am going to work myself into the ground and get sick.  I have added mileage to my runs but dropped 1 swim.  I am looking for some opinions, so have at it.
