brick94513 - 2010-08-04 11:02 AM Errrr.... Two flats and I'm sitting on the side of the road waiting for my wife to pick me up. So much for my ling ride today. I was planning on 50, but only got 28 in before the fiasco begun.Damn!

Hope you got some sunblock! Ever think of gettin some Gatorskins or Armadillos?

No one to blame but myself.  I normally carry an extra tube in my jersey.  But, after my last flat, I never replaced it.  So, as I took off this morning, I threw a patch kit and a couple CO2 cartridges in my pocket.  Well, obviously this didn't work so well.  The flat looked like a pinch flat.  Patch it, put it back on the bike, started to inflate and the patch failed. One cartridge gone.  Repeated the process with success the second time.  Second and last cartridge gone.  However, I only got a mile done the road before it went flat again.  No more cartridges.  Luckily I had my phone to call roadside assistance (wife)!

Moral of the story, carry an extra tube.  Jay, I haven't looked into either of those products.  I have this big issue with rotational mass even when just for training.  I can't rationally explain it either.

Let's put your irrational rotational mass theory to rest.

28 miles on "lower rotational mass wheel/tire" then poof, flat tire vs FIFTY miles on "higher rotational mass" wheel/tire and no flat.

I don't see the argument. Laughing

I'm with Jay here. I train and race on Gatorskins. I'll take the extra mass. I had 3000+ miles on my last set of gatorskins with no flats. I currently have near 1000 miles on my second set and still no flats.

Jay, by the way, I got an email about the Oceanside 70.3.  The race is already 84 percent full.  If you are planning on doing this race, you might not want to wait around to register.  The race is scheduled for April 2, 2011.

Damn already?  Ok, thanks.  I'll have to see if I can swindle some of this years funds to pay my way into it.

ETA:  Wait, you're trying to trick me into doing it!  I'm not planning on hittin that one until 2012, after we move next summer.

makes a good case for those CO2 inflators that can also act as hand pumps as a backup.

So, you guys got me thinking about some new training tires.  However, neither the Gator Skins nor the Armadillos, come in a 21.  I currently ride on Specialized S-Works Mondo clinchers 700 x 21.   You guys aren't running 23s on your TT bikes are you?

No sir, go back a few pages.  I said instead of targeting Vegas at the end of next season the O'side race would be better since I would have to move 8 weeks out from Vegas and I would be able to put in a solid 20 week plan for O'side if I didn't deploy.  See,  I only bailed on ONE race Laughing

I have strep throat and have been so sick. Can't swallow without extreme pain, acute body aches, fever.

Bummer....  Hope you feel better soon.

Going to shoot for Hillapalooza mid August, but it's one day before I leave for Montreal. I'm wondering if it's a good thing to go on a long plane trip after a triathlon, even if it is just a sprint?

I don't think this would be that big of a deal.  If your worried about lower extremity edema or DVTs, I would wear recovery socks while on the plan.  Obviously, you would want to make sure to hydrate post event prior to the flight (and not with beerWink).

shmeeg - 2010-08-02 11:29 PM ^^ Yea, it's amazing how much crap you can collect in a very short time when you have the buying bug Money mouth

Ok sports fans, since I'm already slow and inefficient in the water, how do I swim slower, easier, or....more relaxed?  I have two speeds in the pool.  On or off.   I really want to try and just swim easy and not concern myself w/ time or speed in this weekend's race but I just can't seem to do anything but churn my arms, do some semblance of a 2bk and gasp for air when I turn my head to breathe.

Jay - I too had only two speeds when I started swimming. I had to consciously tell myself to relax every time I got in the pool. I had to keep repeating it over and over. This is how I finally learned to relax (I can still remember the day): Donned my racing wear, cap and goggles. I got in the pool and started swimming my first 25 yards , turned and during my second 25 I made a CONSCIOUS decision to slow down. As a matter of fact, I actually stopped in the middle of the lane (no one was behind me) and just let myself float in one place face down in the water while I did a progressive muscle relaxation check: Starting with my head - is my head tensed? is my neck tensed? (mine was - really badly....I had to totally let go of the tension in my neck before I started seeing improvement) are my shoulders relaxed? back? chest? butt? legs? toes? (This actually can be done in under 10 seconds so you don't drown!)

Make sure you tell the lifeguard at your pool that you will be doing this beforehand so they don't freak and think you've tacked-out and are floating because you're dead. Surprised

Once I was absolutely sure that my entire body was relaxed, with special attention to my neck and shoulders, I then rotated my body to take a breath, face back in water, and started swimming slowly and smoothly. I focused on the catch-up drill to begin with, because of it's seemingly slow, steady and long tempo....it makes sure you aren't just flailing your arms around. I stopped worrying about my form and started paying attention to how relaxed I was instead. Sure enough - my time improved significantly in less than one week! Laughing

And Tim, don't beat yourself up too much on the weekend.  Sounds like a really rough race that didn't match your strengths.  Even with that you still finished solid.  Know that each time I read your reports I just shake my head and think, man that would be great to get to that point!!!

I hope my post didn't come off as a whine.  It really is just frustation.  This has been a hard year for me coming off of an injury and dealing with a huge increase in competition.  I feel I have hit a plateau in my training and I'm unsure how to get to that next level.  There seems to be an incongruity between the hours that I put in each week in training and my results this year.  In a way, I feel I've lost my direction and need to take a new direction.  But, which direction?

Tim,

What does your coach say?

Cool, I'll give that a shot next week.  I gotta do somethin, this crap is really pissin me off!

ETA:  Oh, what do you guys think is better for racing? 2nd bottle on seat tube w/ flat kit in it or little seatbag w/ flat kit hanging behind the seatpost?  I feel like the seatbag kind of defeats the purpose of that nice hydrofoil seatpost.  I tried shoving the tube up under my seat and putting everything else in a bento but i don't like it.  I think I raced w/ a big avenir seatbag on my bike for the supersprint a couple months ago.  I don't even remember.

Hey Tim....

Just curious...what kind of shoes do you use for Xterra's and trail runs? I used my regular running shoes when I did Ft. Custer earlier in the year. I guess they worked, but I was wondering what you thought about trail specific shoes?

Allright....I'm kind of hosed here.

I've been really consistent this year with my training and I have to be proud of myself for that. However, enter last week. We had family in town all week and were entertaining. I did a lot of running around. Worse, was the fact that our guests were big drinkers and I'm an ex-binge drinker. I usually do really well staying away from booz and bad food, but I had a big breakdown last week. I still did some trainin early last week but it fizzled late last week. This week I feel like garbage. All the booze and processed food I ate last week, along with lack of sleep has caught up to me. I don't feel prepared for the Naperville tri this weekend. Originally, I planned Naperville to do with my wife and basically as a training tri since I want to focus on longer ones. However, being very local, my whole family and lots of friends decided it would be cool to come see me strut my spandex stuff!!! Now, I kind of want to do well. My question is how do I get my groove back with only a few days left?

1. Nothing now, take your losses and rest up for race day?
2. Get back on course with your nutrition and do some speed work bike/run today and swim friday?
3. do an easy brick tonight and easy swim friday, and hammer race day?
4. other suggestions?

I know I blew it here. (sorry guys/gals ) It's my own fault, for sure. Is there any hope? or am I just going to suck Sunday?

Brian I wear trail shoes.  Our conditions out here are usually pretty adverse for the runs.  Courses are usually have single track with rocky terrain and obstacles are common.  Water crossings are occasionally present.

Trail shoes will usually have a lower profile, more aggressive tread, wider toe box, and a toe kick.  Plus, I wear my trail shoes a 1/2 size larger so my toes will not hit the front of the shoe on descents.

If your running on fire road, your regular street shoes will be fine and lighter.  However, once the terrain gets a little nastier, I'll take the little extra weight for the comfort.

Too late in the game meow.  Just try to hydrate, get some healthy foods in you and rest up the next couple days.  Your training prepared you for the race, your body will carry you strong to the finish.

On a similar note, I whacked the sh*t outta my knee on my aerobar as I bailed off the rollers for the 4th time yesterday Laughing.  I'm kind of limping around on it today, anybody know some quick rehab tips so I'm GTG for Saturday?

What is done is done!  No sense looking back now.  The lack of exercise really won't impact your aerobic capacity for this weeked.  Alcohol... well we just all need that sometimes!  Processed food, ouch!

Anyways, I concur with Jay. Clean up your diet for the week.  As for the workouts, keep them light.  There is nothing to be gained from speedwork at this point, except for an injury.  Keep the pace consevative for run and bike.  The swim can be whatever, but I would probably focus on form and one, light LDS.  Give yourself one rest day before the race.  Use this day to loosen up with stretching, foam roller, and mental preparation.

I don't really have a good answer here.

In my last sprint, I took nothing for repairs.  I figured if I had a mechanical, the race was over for me.  During my olympic, I taped a tube and CO2 cartridge to the underside of the seat.  In Xterras, I wear a small Camelback so this stuff gets stashed in there.

I'm still undecided, but leaning toward the double bottle off of the seat, one bottle on the frame, and continue to tape the tube under the seat for HIM.

Thanks, I think I'm going to do a light short distance brick tonight. Maybe the length of the tri but at 1/2 pace. Then a swim for tomorrow. Rest Saturday and race on Sunday.
