Hey all!!!

NOLA is going to be great!!!!  I am going to rock that HIM!

Scheduled a long ride for tomorrow morning.  Hoping for 50+ miles on the bike tomorrow, a buddy from my Tri group will be riding with me.  Managed an hour on the drainer last night, burned but avg 19.5!  Watched So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars.  Two hours of recorded shows in one hour, priceless!

Starting back into swimming with the back issues.  Got in 1950m yesterday using a combination of fins (no kick, just use the lift), pull buoy, and some with no toys.  Back is about 90% so Friday I should be back to normal.  Worked on improving my stroke which seems to be helping.  I want 2:10-2:20/100m for that HIM (without burning myself out), may not get there but that is what I am going to train for.

Another Gary question, anyone have any experience with the wheel covers from Wheelbuilder.com.  What I heard is for ~$90 you get a cover for your rear wheel that makes it as aero as possible for your current wheel.  Cheaper than race wheels (but not quite as Aero).  I found some used 650c Hed 3 or Renn 575 (I think that was the number) wheels for $250 a wheel plus shipping.  But I have been spending a lot of money on this sport and if for $90 I can get 80-90% of the Heds aero I would go that way.

Gary - I have a Wheelbuilder wheelcover and honestly I just don't use it that much but it seems to do the trick.  I got it as I have a powertap so the wheel it is on is the one I race with and train with....therefore the disc cover made sense.  Also since I don't ride that fast I just haven't been able to justify the expense of race wheels.

I took my bike in to the shop as it was still giving me problems with the "easy" gears - you know, the ones I'll need when I go up the hill at the race tomorrow - anyway, I told the guy at the shop that it's been adjusted, and didn't keep the adjustment... he took it apart, and found a BENT SCREW!!!  He replaced the screw & the cable, charged me $13 and sent me on my way...  I haven't ridden it yet, it's nicely packed in my car for the ride to Utah this afternoon... maybe I'll take it out for a spin if I get a chance after I check-in to the Hotel...  Still, happy that I got it fixed...

I packed my stuff this morning, I hope I remembered to grab everything... I used the checklist from here and it seemed to work well for my last race, so I should be good to go. Leaving here in about 3 hours and counting...

LRR - that's my issue at 18-19 it's hard to justify the price (even used).  Will take a wait and see approach and may be get one in Jan.  Nice thing about the 650's is you can find some deals.  Nice to pick up some Hed3's for $200 each.

Diane - go!  Good luck!  You will do great!  I would take that bike out for a spin as soon as you get there!

Well, went for 50+ and around the 30 mile mark a wasp landed on my middle finger and stung me!  Hurt like the dickens.  Headed home, ice, drugs, etc.  Went for a swim after but my hand hurt and my nutrition was off so I ended up cramping.  So I am going to start wearing gloves during the ride and buying a lot more bananas!  But I still managed 34 miles on the ride plus 1300+ on the swim.

Rode with a Tri group buddy for the first 25.  Couple of times we took is up to 23mph and held it for1/4-1/2 mile.  Fun but burned!!  Did I mention my finger still hurts??!!  LOL, later!

OK - did my first workout since the crash today - a one hour intense ride - really wanted to go further but decided to keep it short until I knew how my body reacted.  The patella (which is the only real pain I have other than the rash pulling) feels/felt really good.  A little swelling but the pain I have had all week is really lessened today.  I am very thankful.  I am going to do a run in the morning to see how it holds up and then it is BACK TO THE PLAN ON MONDAY!!!!  woo hoo!!!  I didn't know how much I would miss training...I can't believe I said that.

By the way, Tegaderm rocks....

Diane - great job and great RR.  I really like the way you describe your race.  I was thinking about your shins so I thought I would ask, how old are your shoes?  How many miles on them?  When was the last time you had your stride analyzed?  I am thinking your shoes may have something to do with this.....

I had a great run today - just plowed along and the patella was great.  I love this .... things feeling better.  By the way, I love Tegaderm....although I feel I am swathed in Saran Wrap....

Bryan, nope not the shoes - good guess though... I went through many, many shoes.... I'm in NB 882's with Custom Orthotics, and they are GREAT for my normal runs - even long runs... which is quite an improvement... They are fairly new...about 30ish miles on them (total guess)

Now, I just gotta work on being able to run off the bike...  I think the soft sand didn't help the situation either.

Diane - great RR!

LRR - glad to hear your back at it and doing okay.

Got in a slow 7 miler in this morning.  Just trying to build for the 1/2 in Nov.  A bit behind on my training but the swim/bike training will help me.  Feels weird not to have a Tri to be training for!  My HIM plan kicks in the end of Nov.  Oh well my chance to try and get faster I guess.

Later all!

WTG Diane. Great race and great race report - I felt like I was there with you! Maybe that's because we "rock the same kicks" - I too am in NB 882's with orthotics 'cept mine are size 11 EE's - veritable pontoons.

Bryan - nice to hear that you are back on the bike. As you would tell any of us - remember to gently ease back into training.

It was a big weekend here in freddy beach. Saturday night marked the return of UNB football after a 20+ year absence. It's no longer a "varsity" sport but rather a "club" team but still, over 2500 people out to see the inaugural game. Great atmosphere. Meanwhile, next door at the hockey arena our Varsity Reds were playing a pre-season exhibition game before a crowd of 1500. That is about 3 times  what some university teams draw for a regular season match!

Weather has taken a decided turn - cold nights and cool(ish) days will now be the norm. Trees have turned colour and are absolutely gorgeous. Great running weather!!

Would love to but tomorrow is a bit hectic.  2.5 hrs as a field marshall for sons soccer tournement.  Watch his game, come home, may ride than back for another game.  Sunday it's two games, same times but don't have to volunteer.

Just replaced the back tube on the bike, weird valve stem that broke.  Did it last week and just realized I had forgot to change it.  Good practice.

Swam today and was doing well until I cramped.  We were doing intervals and I think I was pushing off too hard.  Combined with poor nutrition (Gatorade and an endurolyte before practice but evidently not enough).  I was doing 50's at 51 seconds (which gave me 20 seconds to catch my breath before next), fast for me!  My stroke seems to be improving, when things line up I fell like I glide thru the water.  Once I get tired things fall apart.  Plenty of time to build endurance.

I don't know what's wrong with me... you all have me thinking about NOLA - can I really accomplish a HIM in 6 months?  I know I can do the swim, I know I can do the run... and I'm pretty sure I can build my bike up... it's the putting it all together that scares me half to death... never mind the training...  I would have a goal of sub-8 ish... but, it sounds like fun...

what do you all think?

Diane - If I can do it you can also.  BTW, NOLA does have a 8 hour cutoff but you should make that easily and I don't know if that is common for all HIMs.  I did find a Tri calculator where you put in expected times/paces and it calculates your expected finish time.  Very helpful.

Gary, where is said calculator?  Also, I looked up last years NOLA times, and there was 1 finisher past the 10 hour mark... with 154 finishers past 8 hours... is the cut-off time new for this year?

I figured on 1 hour for the swim, 4 hours for the bike, and 3 hours for the run... 0 time for transitions  - so I might go over 8 hours

Oh, and btw, just because you can do it, doesn't mean I can do it LOL

Calc link: http://www.triadtriteam.com/tools/calc_tri_pace.htm
I put in your times and you would be swimming a 3:09/100m, ride 14mph, and run 13:44mm

The course is much flatter than what you have been riding on so your bike speed will be higher.

As for the cutoff I just read that on the site.  Don't know if that is new or if they just don't enforce it.  One of the RR's I read the guy came in at 8:05 so they did not enforce that last year.

Don't sell yourself short, you train hard you can do this!

I am starting with a the 20 week HIM plan from BT.  So I do my 1/2 mary in Nov, take about 2 weeks off than start the HIM training.

One note, been using my bike trainer, set it up in front of the tv and watch recorded shows.  One heckuva workout, much harder than the road as you keep one pace, no gliding, etc (okay I know I am preaching to the choir to those that own one).  With the TV no boredom.  A winter of riding the trainer (with weekend outdoor rides) and I will be set.  A friend is lending me a Spinerval (?) dvd to try out.

***Don't sell yourself short

I had to laugh out loud at this line as I stand 5'0" tall short

A trainer sounds like a good idea - hard to justify though since I pay for gym membership... is it THAT much better than the trainers at the gym?  Sometimes though, I just don't feel like going to the gym, and I don't feel like dealing with the traffic signals, traffic, weather etc... and I could just jump on my bike while I watch TV...
