TIM-no offense taken so I guess I need to clarify what needs to be worked on. I know my T1 and T2 are good..so my comments are just small thoughts on how to improve but are not major concerns.

My run and swim are my priorities for the off season. The bike will just keep coming along as I work on it but I tend to rank well on the bike (thank you BT for giving me that graph).

We share the same thoughts about areas for improvement and where.

I looked at overall time at different points in my past race and I was pretty consistent in AG place through T2 but I lost 9 places on the run in the AG standing. So this highlights the area.

17th after swim

13th after T1

14th after the bike

13th after T2

22nd at the end

Yes pacing in a race (Swimming) is tough since you can not always do splits (some races buoys are every 100)-- I base the effort on perceived effort only

Awesome, way to pass folks in transition!  I love to pass that one girl who was in front of me on the bike in the transition run.    Sounds like a very solid race.

Update on the new (purple) Garmin FR60-- so far so good!  So you put in your height and weight, and that's it.  You can calibrate by running a known distance and editing what the Garmin measures on the screen to match.

Before calibration: one mile loop was 0.97 on the Garmin

After calibration: 1.19 on Garmin FR 60, 1.21 on MapMyRun, 1.19 on BT Route creator.

Sooo, pretty spot on, so far.  I just ran easy...haven't tried any intervals yet.  Not sure if it will make a difference.

I might try to run with both the new FR60 and Michael's 305 just to see what they come up with...

KC- that so funny you mentioned that - I was reading that Don Finks book this morning and he was talking about having good mentors in order to be successful at Ironman.  I was thinkning what better place to find IM mentors than here with David, Scott and Brian.  It has already helped me a ton and not sure where I would find IM info or have questiones answered if there were not forums on the internet like this.  Like KC- I also appreciate everyones help and support in this group.

Totally agree with Tim and KC.  How wonderful it is to have such a neat group that listens when we ramble on. The other half will listen, friends will listen, but they don't always 'get it'. The support and camaradarie in our group is fantastic. You guys are the best Laughing

kdevarenne - 2011-09-19 9:17 AM Deb - What HIM Are you going to do?

I was going to redo the same one as this year. However, I discovered there is a marathon at Lake Placid on the same course as the Ironman, and since that is my goal for my first IM, and Don Fink suggests an Mary before an IM, I figured what better place to do it?? Unfortunately, it just happens to be in June a week out from the HIM so I will be looking for another HIM.  Then I moved on to maybe a September HIM and was looking at Pumpkinman, Cooperstown (HITS) or Lake George. Then I remembered that in September I am going to California to do the Alcatraz Invitational swim so that ruled out Cooperstown. So Long story, long, I guess it will be either Lake George or Pumpkinman. Leaning towards LG at the moment.

As for the compression I have pants and socks but rarely use them, I won't walk around in public with them on as we already look like dorks in our outfits I don't want to add to that lol.  I will say that the pants may have some effect as you do feel better after a night of wearing them (not sure if its mental or not)  I would go to Meijer/walmart and get some diabetic socks for $15 to see if they help, if so buy the expensive race socks or calv sock.

Oh excellent Idea. Thanks, I will try those first.

Good luck on the weight loss as it usually follows your training unless you eat a perfect diet.  Ramp up your miles and I'll bet the pounds melt away.  Hang in there you will do great at your HM.

It would be wonderful if it worked that way, however looking back at my weight logs it was during HM / HIM training between the end of Jan and May that I gained all 16 fat a$$ lbs. Yell looking back I think I was starving all the time and must have been over compensating for my 3+ hr bikes and long runs with too many calories (Thanks to a nutritionist for the calorie calculations and 'non'advice) and my body was in major fat storage mode. Now it's clinging on to the stupid stuff for dear life and I can't shift any of it, instead it just follows me around everywhere I go taunting me Cry

I WILL persevere!!

Hi RFP TEAM--

So I am laying low this week training wise to allow some healing of my foot. I also am doing a MS ride this weekend with a total of 175 miles (100 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday) so I wanted to be well rested.

I have one more race in 2 weeks then my TRI season is over. Cry This is my second year of doing TRIs ( I only did one in 2010) and I have learned so much! Not sure of my plans for next season but I am already signed up for an OLY. I will definitely not race so much!!!! My running needs to get pieced together so I will be doing some reading and experimenting on different approaches!

I can look back at my season and say it was eye-opening for me. I am pleased at what I have accomplished even though it was frustrating at times.

I am addicted!!! This group has kept me motivated and allowed me to dream for the future!

THANK YOUCool

Deb - No HIM for me next year.  My goal next year is an olympic distance.  Lucky for me I started training with a race director who is putting on an olympic next year just 15 minutes down the road!  Then HIM for 2013!

Good luck at the race, KC. You'll have fun and do well I'm sure. Let us know how it goes.

Kevin. Uhm, 175 miles? That's a REALLY (really) long way. Holy moly! I hope it all goes well...... Your poor legs! Great cause.

I am attempting a 10 mile run in the am. Hoping the rain might actually stop or at least lighten up a little so I don't wash away.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Hey Team.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Did my first half marathon today in Amherstburg Ontario - and FINISHED Smile.

Time  2:07:52. I told the Coach today I did it in 2:06 but I forgot that I had my Garmin on Auto Turn Off when stopped (had to pee twice LOL).

Anyway, had a great morning. The race started at 7:15 and while I have not run that far before, I had a good plan and stuck to it. I knew I would be jacked up at the start line but I did my best to keep myself under control and still do my race pace. My goal was to finish somewhere between 2:20 and 2:30 but as you can see, I was able to beat that and am very happy about it. Not real fast, but good for me and more importantly, I don't think I did any damage to the body (will confirm tomorrow LOL).

My last 5 km were real good and I may have left to much on the course becasue I had some good wheels for the last 5 - but that is cool.

Coach suggested I do a little ice bath when I got home - so I did - BRRRRRRRRRR that was cold! Hopefully it will help with recovery.

I hope everyone else had a great weekend.

Have a great week everyone.

KC

Great job KC!!!  the ice will help you esp if your thinking about running again this week.

How is everyone else doing?  I get to watch my wife race next week and the temp is supposed to be high 30s in the AM. It will be SO cold getting on the bike for her.

So what is everyone's plans for the next month or two? wind down alittle/train hard?

If were keeping this group going we have to start thinking about measurable goals we can set for each other in a month or two (ie power #/run miles/ 100yard swim time)  Just start thinking about it and we can post them after everyone rests a few weeks ( I hopefully heal up).

175 human powered miles over 2 days in the books!!  Cool This was a fun yet challenging (mental and physical) event for me.

I now think that a HIM maybe in my future (not sure when???)

GREAT JOB—KC on your half mary!

My thanks to the group too.  I wouldn't have been able to t get the support anywhere else.  Tim, if you need anything in your march to IM Wisconsin, let me know.  I'd love to come up and ride the bike course with you and anyone else who would like a preview of it.   Love that course.  Also, are you planning a half IM for training?  I need a destination for an A race for next year.

KC - Great job on your 1/2 marathon.  I am big proponent of the post long run ice bath.  Feeling better today?

Kevin - 175 freakin miles!?!  Good for you.  How do you feel now?

Deb - How was your 10 miler?

Coach - I agree we need to do something to motivate each other.  Mostly selfish.  Since IM 4 weeks ago I feel completely rudderless and void of motivation.  Maybe each of us could post a workout goal for October.  Total number of miles on bike, run, and swim...something like that.

Fully agree with KC and Tim - this group has been awesome.  Thanks so much for all the support and motivation!

My goal for Oct. is to recover and get my hernia surgery done, then slowly ramp up...easy does it.  I haven't had any letdown from the IM, primarily because I already know that I have two short races on the schedule for 2012 and am searching for the right half IM for an A race.  I have other ideas too...

Hi all,

I'm briefly breaking my "no posting from work" rule to check in.  I did my 20 mile run yesterday. Got through it (with several walk breaks, but since I subscribe to the Running Room theory of training - which means all long runs are done with specified pre-planned walk breaks, it's okay.)

My system broke down a bit in the middle (I was running with my mom, who did something to her knee, so we took an extended walk break at the end of the part that she was running with me) and the end (I started listening to my brain, which was bored and trying to convince me to (a) quit; (b) take a short cut; or (c) just walk the last 4 miles).

The first reason I'm not worried about, as I appreciated having the company to get me through at least part of the distance.

For the second one, though, I don't know what to do.. I haven't been training with an ipod (under the theory that the harder I make the training runs, the easier the race will seem, where I intend to have music in addition to the various distractions on the course itself), so that might help; but I would love any tips that you might have to stop the chatter in my own head over really long distances..

They don't let us use music on races so I quit using it on training runs.  I use mantras.  I am a strong runner, I am a strong runner...  Easy, quick, easy quick...  patience, patience, patience. ...

KC - Awesome job on the 1/2 Mary!  Negative splits are the only way to run a race like that.  No better feeling than blowing past all the people who went out way too fast.  One of the hardest things to do in those races is keep to YOUR pace and not everyone elses.  Awesome work.  I tend to agree with Brian on the ice baths - I did them in 2009 while trainign for Chicago and my wife is convince it is what gave me my heart palpatation issues becasue I never had them until I took the ice baths.  Probably has nothing to do with it it but not worth hearing the grief I get from her when I take them-haha.

Kevin - Awesome job on the MS ride.  175 is alot of miles Surprised.  What is the longest you have ridden til then?  I would say a HIM is not gonna be a problem.

Scott - If you could give me maybe a 1/4 of consitency and drive to nail your workouts I will be in good shape.  That would be great to do a course ride sometime next year.  I am planning on doing Racine 70.3 in July.  My buddy did that Oly in Bloomington this year and really liked it -maybe I'll make a trip down there next year also.  Good luck with your surgery!  Your an Ironman now so you don't even need to be knocked out for the surgery right?

Coach - I am just taking it easy right now and trying to just maintain my fitness.  I was getting stressed out this weekend because I wasn't able to get my workouts in but then I realized how crazy it is to get stressed out now when from February to August I will be getting plenty of workouts.  I did some TT's last week and didn't really lose any fitness so I was pretty happy about that.  No races scheduled with the baby coming soon.  As far as posting goals - one thing my previous group would do was have challenges with each other.  Most times we would do core challenges where everyone committs to doing a core workout 3 days a week or something along that lines.  Makes it fun to do stuff we normally don't like to do.

And finally I will leave you with a funny story - I was trying to explain to my wife about RFP last month and now she uses it on me all the time for housework!!  I am in the process of turing our upstair loft into a 4th bedroom (thought it was gonna be a weekend job but has turned into 4 weeks now).  I was sitting on the  couch watching TV and she started naging to get uptairs and finish the room.  She told me "RFP" and then went on to make a smartass comment that if I treated the room like I am this Ironman stuff it would be done-haha.  I went on to tell her that Ironman is about "slow and steady and pacing yourself - so I am doing just fine with the room-leave me alone"-haha

Good Morning Team.

Thanks for the words about my half yesterday. Just an FYI, got a good nights sleep and my body is still working. Legs are a bit sore but I will be just fine. Actually going to try to get 2000 meters in the pool this afternoon.

Naked Kevin - Nice riding my friend and awesome of you to lend a hand to that charity.

Just going to toss this out there - some of you are looking for a race for next year (Scott,Brian?, Deb?, Tim?) as either an A race or a good test before your A races. I have not confirmed with the Coach yet but we talked about doing the 70.3 in Muncie, scheduled for July 7, 2012. This might be a great way for all of us to accomplish some of the things we are setting our sites on and do it together?

Heather - awesome job getting through your run - perfect exampld fo RFP I would say. I don't listen to music on any of my rides. I just figured since I can't do it when I am racing, best to get used to not doing it at all. I find I just think about my breathing, my pace, my day, sing a tune in my head etc. Whatever it takes to put one foot in front of the other.

Keith - to answer your question, I realy enjoyed the day and I am digging the longer runs now. They take some time but I do like the sense of accomplishment they give me.

Coach - I like the idea of setting some goals and posting them. I know I am going to need something to strive for since race season is now officially over and I am bummed about it. My golf team and I will be busy for another 3 weeks but once November rolls around - I am going to start ramping up. I will try to keep up the running and swimming for the rest of October though.

Have a great day everyone.

KC

FYI - 107th page started!

Great job Heather on the 20!!  As far as music goes I never use music.  I think it makes you mentally tougher and also more in tune with what you are actually doing.  When I used to run with music my pace would fluctuate with the song.  Plus the best part of running the races is the fan interaction and whe you have the headphones on you miss all that.  I actually enjoying hearing thousands of snipets of conversatiosn as I pass people-haha.

Plus it is safer to not have earphones in!!

When is your race?

KC - I just got the photos of IM.  THanks so much!  They are great.

I guess I am the only one of the group that listens to music.  I listen on every training run or ride that I am alone.  Do not listen during races though.  As KC and Coach can attest, I enjoy talking to those around me while racing Laughing

Thinking of my OCtober goals.  Will post them here as well as put them on my training log front page by Wednesday...

Too funny, nothing like turning our mantra into house work! lol

Once we get a couple weeks of downtime we can all set some type of goal, I know mine will be based off wattage and swim pace.
