I have the orange and lemon lime nuun flavors.  Is there any way to get a sample of all the different types of flavors without buying a tube of each?

Gatorade endurance is what they will have on the chicago marathon course and the fox valley marathon course.  While I can see using nuun during the week, shouldn't I train with gatorade endurance?

I really wish there was a multi quote function on this forum.

Kelly- so girl=cute groupie and guy=creepy stalker?  Got it.  Thanks for clearing that up.  :P  Oh and would you really expect anything else from Ironman on Rev3?  Some of their corporate stances seem backwards to me, enough that I'd think about not giving them my money, but they have a lot of the long course market to themselves and there isn't much of a choice.

Carrie-  I really like the triberry flavor of NUUN.  Mixes well with other drinks if you're making  your own race combo.  I would train with what's on course though.  At least the last few weeks prior to the event.

Question.  If you had a chance to get a lactate profile done on the bike or run which would you choose?

uhcoog - 2011-07-06 9:48 AM Question.  If you had a chance to get a lactate profile done on the bike or run which would you choose?

It doesn't really matter because you can use the HR zones determined by one to set the other (within a margin of error).

The other thing you need to realize is that if you're going to have this done, you really need to think about how you're going to use the information.  A lactate test will give you pretty specific and pretty accurate HR zones, but you also have to have a plan that implements those specific zones to cause an improvement in performance.  Super accurate HR zones mean nothing if you don't actually use them.

In regards to LT testing- yeah, I know I need to figure out how to integrate HR training into my routine.  Figure it needs to happen sometime though.

As for the flip turn vid it seems so easy or she makes it seem that way.  I, however, am super uncoordinated so it will probably take a ton of time to get right.

It is easy.  Just follow it step by step.  All it takes is a little practice.

Personally, I think HR training is the way to go, but you need to follow it.  I know Shaun gets super frustrated because he feels like he's "going too slow" and tries to push it, but it works.

I learned watching videos on youtube, but my masters coach had us start using noodles.  Hold the ends with each hand, then flip over it til your are comfortable.  Or try doing flips from about 1/3 away and just keep doing them, then incorporate into the actual swim.

I am not the most coordinate, and don't do it perfectly, but I get it done.  Just keep practicing.  I will also take a bit to feel comfortable knowing the distance to start your flip, learning to hold your breath and not getting water up your nose.  It also may take a bit to get your body used to that new exercise, cuz it can tire you out in the beginning.

Yes - Gatorade endurance (or perform, they keep changing the name) really works for me.  It is much higher in electrolytes than anyother commerically available product and if you can train with what is on the course as carrying your own sports drink is not ideal.  The issue i have with the gatorade endurance is it is sooooo sweat. After a long run or ride i just wanted to brush my teeth and eat sour and bitter stuff (i was contemplating bringing a bag of pickle chips to Rev3 but settled on coffee GU).

One of the many great tips i think Kelly gave was to use sports drink on long runs/rides rather than water.  this has really helped me on longer efforts.  I use NUUN to pre-hydrate before long efforts - when i dont wan tthe calories from sports drink but do want the electrolytes and on mid range efforts when, again, I wan tthe electrolytes but not calories.  But, i sweat like a tropical storm and if "Jeff Salt" could be marketed like the current craze of fancy sea salts, I could live a good life... hmmm, maybe chocolate GU sprinkled with Jeff Salt, there's a winner worst dessert ever!

I know it works.  I'm pretty sure I'll fall into Shaun's mindset at first though.

Remember this: When Mark Allen first started working with heart rate training he was told to keep his HR under 150 for 6 months to rebuilt his base after losing to Dave Scott at Kona.  Allen had to WALK during some of his long runs!  he did not lose a race for 2 years or so thereafter.  HR training works, you need to apply it consistently and early on in your training however.  Look at Kelly's HR profiles versus pace and you will see how it works.  Personally, i am not convinced HR trainign ahs a much correlation ont eh bike or swim.  But i think it works well on the run.

I watched a Discovery Channel special about dean karnazes - they did a LT test while he ran 10 miles at a 7 minute pace.  His body clears lactic acid faster than its produced, hence, subject only to food and water he can technically run forever as he does not feel fatigue.

Jeff I hear what you're saying on the HR training.  I also know how I was raised in Texas sports to approach training.  You run until you puke and then you run some more.  You lift until you find yourself stuck under the weight and then a buddy lifts it off of you.  Just a mindset that's so beat (literally) into me that I have fight it daily.
