Extreme Veteran 868 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by DirkP Brenda, I do seem to have have lost a little bit of the ink in the tattoo on my right arm. There is only a small portion of it that had become a little more faded than the rest of it. My others (2) were protected by my jersey or not in a place that was being dragged along the asphalt. One month away and I guess we can begin to call you "Iron Will" right? I know I'm ready to track you (track you, provided they provide tracking) and see you cross that finishing line. It has been a pretty solid journey so far. Just think, you only have one more week of insane training before you get to dive into your taper! In the pool area I had never noticed a sign stating how many yards equals how many laps and it didnt calculate correctly based on a 25 yrd pool. So i asked the guy i train with , he wasnt sure so as we were walking past the pool There is a sign on the wall in the hallway that states the pool information. It's a 8x11 framed typed piece of paper and not very noticeable. I am going to shoot someone an email today just to double check. Will you must be getting pretty excited!! Love it Iron Will Edited by Jo63 2013-09-27 5:53 AM |

Veteran 487 Nova Scotia, Canada | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Good luck the HM this weekend Dirk, set the bar high and you never know what you might do. Glad to hear your feeling better from the crash.Jo, sorry to hear about the pool, to bad you didn't think it was 20 and then it turned out to be 25. I swim in an odd sized poll as well, it's just over 21 yards. Really strange, I think they just built the pool to the size they had, lol. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED JoAnne that is surprising about the pool length in the sense that you thought you were doing more than you actually were doing. I'd probably be upset about that as well. I think the pool size is not so surprising there seems to be a lot of pools that are not the standard 25/50 yard/meters. I guess that means more laps for you to get your distance in. I like the Iron Will tag too, that is great. Will one or two more weeks of suffering than on to the taper depending on what your plan calls for. The taper is nice to give your body a rest and make sure you take adavantage of that but don't let your mind play games with you. It will if you let it. You've done all the hard work and training you needed to do, you are ready to do this so don't doubt yourself. Start thinking about and preparing yourself for how you will execute your race from start to finish and if you can start organizing your checklists for your gear and your nutrition plan start doing that now. The other thing is try and stay as busy as you can the less you think about the actual race the less nervous you'll be. I think that helped for me not that I was not nervous but the less I though about it the better I felt. |

Karl she won't be in until next Wednesday the earliest so once I get her I'll post a pic here for you guys. I would love to try doing an Xterra race but it will probably have to wait until 2015. I'm committed to IMMT so probably not much racing next season and there are no local Xterra event here on Long Island. I am very much considering doing one more tri this season though. There is a sprint on 10/12, Cedar Beach which I am very much leaning towards doing the only thing is I'm enjoying my down time. I should just do it. I need to decide pretty soon sounds like it will sell out before registration closes on 10/10. |

Veteran 498 Redding, CA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk - Good luck on the race Saturday. I'll pray for a safe race. I'll most likely be out getting my morning run in while you are out there on the race course so I wont be able to track you.
Will - Your little one is super cute! I remember my girls being that young. So many wonderful memories.
Tony - Congrats on the new bike. Careful though or you might end up doing Xterra offroad races with Jeff.

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hey all, missed a few days, or week! I think a few of you are racing this weekend, good luck, have fun, but not too much fun it is supposed to be a race . for me, I have officially allowed my post race laziness to settle in. I had hoped to do one more sprint this weekend, but I waited to long to sign up and my wife claimed the day! Now I am off shopping or something, who knows! I have maintained a resemblance of run training but that's about it, I can't not motivate myself to get on the bike and have considered putting on the green tire and setting up the suffer room! Even looked at the sufferfest videos, but most likely going to stick with run only for another month, I need to run a sub 21 5k yet to meet a 2013 goal. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk, I won't get to track you bc of my first organized century, but I'll be looking forward to getting on as soon as possible to see how badly you beat your previous PR... Wow, so apparently there's like 4,000 cyclists here for the century ride tomorrow... well, there's multiple distances... but still, I was thinking about all those bikes and starting to get a little worried about all that "traffic" on the course... I've never been in a stand alone bike race so not sure what to expect but hoping I can avoid any "incidents" and stay safe. |

I went back through posts to see what he was hoping to do and I can't find it. Do any of you know his goal PR time? BTW - Great Saturday Morning to you all!

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Well, things didn't work out well for me today. I'll detail everything in my race report but for now the quick summary is; I was on track for a 1:30 half marathon for over 7 miles. I was averaging 6:45-6:50 miles through 7.5 miles and them I was hobbled by my old meniscus tear in my left knee. This is the first race I've never been able to finish strong from a performance perspective but the mental challenges of today were pretty tough. Not to mention the physical strain to my body and mind. The last several miles were almost 9:00 miles. The good news is that I still didn't have the worst half marathon I've ever had. I still finished with an unofficial time of 1:40:??. Edit: I just checked the official results and my official time is 1:43:01. This isn't horrible but it is disappointing. I was on track for a 1:29:05 through mile 7 and even for most of the way through mile 8. But then............ The discrepancy in my Garmin time and the official time is due to my settings on my watch. I initially forgot that my watch has the auto pause feature activated. That would account for my 2:40 difference in finishing times. Edited by DirkP 2013-09-28 11:37 AM |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED DIRK - I'm so sorry for your pain and not having the race you wanted. You finished, you learned, you have to move on. Now what, though? Are you going to a Dr. or are you just going to give the knee more time to heal? I'm uneducated in the ways of meniscus tears. I'm sad for you, though. On the flip side of sadness, JOANNE, you made me laugh and I totally got a kick out of you going over your IMWI plans with your hubby. I'm really happy to see you got a hotel room and are excited. TONY, Oh TONY.... how'd your 5K go? Did you take this one easy like you said you were? WILL posted some pictures on FB of his century ride. Looked like it was going to be a nice day for one. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk I'm very sorry to hear about the issue with your knee today. It sounds like you were having a great race up until that point. I'm glad you were able to finish but I am really hoping that there is nothing seriously wrong with your knee. I know you are probably disappointed but I hope you get some rest and do whatever you need to do to take care of that knee. JoAnne I had to laugh as well at your IM post. Yeah that sounds pretty familiar. I'm glad you were able to find a place sounds like you have some options for getting down to Monona Terrace. I think it's probably best to close but not right there. Will how did the century ride go? Did you use this as a training ride for the IM training? Brenda I know we touched bases on FB but no race for me today lol. Apologies for any confusion the 10K's I'm looking to do are in Nov. I had great ride today with my friend Wynn and two of his friends. We did a hills ride today. We actually drove down to start closer to the hills to cut out the flat stuff today. He was not joking when he said we were going to ride hills. I think he took us up every hill in the towns of Wading River, Rocky Point and Port Jefferson! The weather was perfect today and we hit the hills hard not what I was expecting to do in my off season but good to know that I can ride hard like that 3 weeks out from the IM. I had fun today even though my legs may not agree with me. |

Extreme Veteran 868 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Tony I have to say you must have done everything right for your IM training because here you are just a few weeks later biking hills, plus running etc. I do have one question for you. I had looked at your logs and you have for calories burned amounts from training and amount just from the day, how did you calculate what you burned from your day? Nutrition is still a huge issue for me, I ended up having another long talk with the guy I am training with and I have got to get this figured out |

That just comes up automatically. I'm sure if there is some setting here on BT but I don't do that intentionally. It just shows up in my log and to be honest I have no idea how accurate that is. What I do is I keep a notebook and log everything I eat and try and estimate my calories. I will say I think I am pretty close to be recovered. I did ALOT of training volume for the IM and I was definitely in the best shape I think I have ever been in. I'm wondering if that and the way I raced the IM aided in my recovery. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Followed up the hills ride with a 7.5 mile trail run today. It was great, the weather has been perfect out here and the trail run was so much better than just running loops in the neighborhood plus they are not flat trails lots of hills, descents and ascents. I loved it! Two things about trail running, you really need to keep your head down to watch for the obstacles and you need to keep your head up to make sure you are staying on the right trail lol. I had a blast this weekend, yep I'm liking this thing they refer to as the off season. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Joanne, Thanks! I was in a considerable amount of pain for the last 5 miles of the race. Although there were a few times there was very little pain after the major onset occurred. Those short spells were not the normal but the exception to the constant pain. Dina, I am not certain if it is torn worse or not. I have torn it 3 times and had a meniscectomy 2 times. Meaning I have had surgery to "correct" the issue twice but not the third time. I have been carrying the torn meniscus since 2009 with virtually no problems at all. For the rest of you who've inquired and/or encouraged me, I gratefully thank you all! Yesterday was extremely tough but it proved more than about toughness for me. It has made me take deeper look inside of myself and, to be 100% honest, I don't really like a lot of what I see. I see that my image of toughness seems to be more important than my personal health and well being. Do I like being seen as a tough guy? Sure! I guess. But to what end? Now my family may have to deal with me having another injury to nurse and the frustration of not being able to work through the winter months maintaining my fitness for IMWI. Right now I'm getting mad at myself for being so foolish. I plan to see a ortho doc as soon as I can get in. But to be honest it's a struggle to go. I already KNOW the diagnosis, regardless of Lis thinking I am foolish for making assumptions, because I have carried this pain for so long. After nearly 5 full years of feeling the pain associated with this injury I can, with precise, pinpoint accuracy, tell where this pain is coming from, EXACTLY. The treatment is where I am not sure where I'll go. Surgery or PT? I'll wait and see. Here is my race report. Edited by DirkP 2013-09-29 6:35 PM |

I am also the last person to go to the doctor to get anything checked out. Look at the big picture on this one, you have a huge race coming up in the way of IMWI make sure you take care of yourself first so you can get there healthy. You've got plenty of time to get ready for that so don't worry about that just worry about taking care of yourself that is the most important thing you can do. I know you know this already so be sensible and get that knee taken care of as we all want you to be 100% for IMWI. |

The treatment is where I am not sure where I'll go. Surgery or PT? I'll wait and see. Here is my race report. Ah yes, the after injury regret. I've been there many times. It is one of the reasons why I "quit" so easily or get to the doc so quickly when I have a foot issue creep up. I hate that feeling that you just described. And don't be too hard on yourself thinking it is all a tough guy attitude. I'm no tough guy in that respect but when my endorphins kick in during a run my brain seems to turn off. This may be a blessing in disguise though. Is it possible that having the injury surface now may save your IM in the long run? It is early, I assume that you will have time for diagnosis and recovery still with plenty of time to prepare for the IM. Maybe you will be able to go into the IM with your knee in stronger, healthier place. What if you would have pushed this hard in the IM? Would you have been able to cross the finish line and at what cost? Now you will know the signs for certain, you will be better equipped to listen to those voices of reason in your head. Looking for the bright side for you. |
