WARNING......DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE HUNGRY!

Dirk....this means you! Tongue out

I had a crappy swim today.  I was tired so I just ended it.  I had a horrible sweet tooth, too!  We don't keep sweets in the house.  We make ourselves something if we want it.

I made apple crisp with some frozen home grown apple slices.  Yum!  Sure, I had to wait over an hour for my sweet treat!  It was worth it, though!  It would be really yummy with ice cream!

I just got off the bike last night, around 8PM after a 1:30 ride and was dealing with hunger pangs for the last 15 minutes and what do I read first?  Yep!  It was like watching a train wreck.  I just couldn't keep from reading.

And you're right ice cream would have been an awesome way to finish off your dessert.

I knew it!  Someone had to go all "Nemo" on Jen's post.  Yes.  I was thinking the same thing truth be told.  I have seen Nemo several times since it is one of Lisa's favorite movies.

She's quite the catch.  No wonder you like her!

Haha  Well I am not sure I caught her though.  I am still trying to figure out just how it is that I am married to her.  Maybe it was the hallucinogenic drugs that I was slipping into her drinks throughout our entire dating experience that had her fooled into marrying me.

And about the heart rate...the strength training dramatically increased the muscle's need for oxygen even after you stopped (for recovery purposes) so your HR was upregulated to provide that extra oxygen.  Normally your body shunts blood away from the upper extremities and digestive tract while you run to maximize the amount of blood your legs can get, but after your whole-body workout it couldn't do that and so your heart beat faster to feed the other muscles it normally doesn't.

One last thing on this, so I am wondering then when I was running should I have gone to a walk to keep my heart rate in zone1-2?

No, perceived exertion is the best thing to use then.  As long as you were comfortable and running at a pace that you've learned from experience is appropriate then your HR in this case didn't matter.

I finished my last 20 minute FTP test and to be honest I was very disappointed once I compared the numbers to the other 3 tests. It was the worse one on average that I have done. I tried to build my effort slowly over the course of the 20 minutes and I think I did a really good job of that this time the only problem was I didn't go hard enough.

The third test which was the last one I did I went very hard and when I finished I though I was going to pass out and die. This time I finished and I felt pretty good. So I know I had more in the tank and didn't leave it all out there. The last test I sort of faded out near the end so I really put more emphasis on pacing myself. Again I think I did a good job of that I just did push as hard as I could've.

I am going to have to this again next week because it really bothers me that I don't feel like I went all out. I was down 17 watts from the last test. I also put out 4 more watts on avg in my first test on average! The positive thing is I put in a really good effort and I was not dying or pushing as hard as I could've so I think this bodes well for me. I am definitely in much better shape on the bike this year.

Here's the numbers:

First test avg pwr 274, max pwr 314
Second test avg pwr 285, max pwr 375
Third test avg pwr 287 max pwr 392
Fourth test avg pwr 270 max pwr 380 - Tonight's test

Tony...just sounds like the wrong execution.  Don't be disappointed my man.  You HAVE to have days like this.  It's all part of training.  Just call it a workout and sluff it off as a learning experience.  No harm done.  I'm still impressed that you have gained 10+ watts.  That's huge dude.

You guys still doing Wednesday weigh-ins? Just curious.

So, I had no running plans this weekend until a friend of mine, a mother of three boys and a very new runner, told me that she is running her very first 10k tomorrow. I thought to myself, I am going to go cheer her on.... this was Tuesday.... by Thursday, I realized that I can't just go cheer her on.... I need to run... so, I signed up and will be doing the 10k tomorrow with my kiddos in the double jogger, hoping the rain holds off until the afternoon.

Red Hills Sprint Tri is 8 days away, a little 10k should be fun.

Jonathan thanks and I agree. I feel much improved on the bike and I think all the work I've done the last 4 months is going to help alot. two more workouts and I'll have completed the Jorge's program. I'll try another test in the next week or two and see how I do.

I have been working on some of my nutrition strategy for IM this season and one thing I would like to do is try and live off the course as much as possible at IMWI. So I ordered a box of Bonk Breaker bars which they serve on the IM course and I tried one last night after my bike workout and before my run. I'd have to say they are really, really good! I tried the peanut butter and jelly ones and they taste great plus no ill effects after eating them. I'll be doing more experimenting with them but just wondering if anyone else has tried them and if so what did you guys think of them.

I got this one right! But Harvard screwed me, plus picking Akron over VCU was a bad choice! At least I got my other 2 #12 picks right! Now as long as Ohio State wins it all, I'm golden!

edit: and I got Wichita st beating Gonzaga! Should make rings interesting!

You're doing the work, so trust that you're improving.  This is virtualized power right?  There are so many variables in calculating that that I'd wait until you hit the road to pass any real judgment.

You are becoming a beast; believe it.  Your races this year will tell the tale.

1st, great work on the bike, I am having difficulty staying motivated on the trainer!

. Keep us updated on the breaker bars, I need to find something for my HIM. The cliff bars I used last year didn't cut it! Too chewy.

I'm at 15, down 13.  Have had three really good weeks of dropping out **most** of the ice cream.

On the food front, I posted this scary article on facebook about junk food and the science behind keeping us (and our kids) addicted to it.

I did see that article you posted.... as I was eating a snack bag of Doritos of all things.

I'm down 6 from the beginning of the year, but the 2 pounds I lost last week don't really count. My goal is to be about 4 more pounds lighter, but not sure how serious I am about those last 4 lbs.

Warren thanks and yes it is virtualized power. I do agree the real test will be riding outdoors but to be honest I definitely feel a difference from last year to this year. I am able to ride on the trainer longer and at a higher level of intensity so it should translate to riding outdoors at a faster pace this year or at least I hope that will be the case.

Matt thanks and I agree with you on the clif bars. They don't agree with me either although they do taste pretty good. I've used a powerbar performance and protein bars but they are too chewy and don't taste all that great. So far the breaker bars taste the best and they are not too chewy and go down pretty easy. We'll see it how it goes with them.

I saw the article on FB but didn't read it.  I kind of got the gist of it from reading some of the posts and I am certainly not surprised.  Greed runs deep through corporations but to be honest I won't find a lot of fault with them.  Every one of us has our own points of greed.  When we condemn corporations, or other individuals, yet condone our own greed because it is simply our own, for our own personal reasons, I feel we are preaching hypocrisy.

But enough of my political perspective.

I have been weighing but not posting.  As of this morning I am at "10 pounds."  Target was hit!  I am not certain just yet that I will count it.  I entered 157 pounds in my log this morning but and I won't make the change until I see 155 for at least a few days.  There is too much fluctuation for me to make the permanent weight.  I have followed this kind of scaling for a few years now and it seems to provide a better picture of my actual weight.

Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed

Did my last 5 minute test tonight for Jorge's winter cycling program for week 16 and this was much better then the 20 minute test this week so I will just write that one off as an off day. At the end of the day I agree with what everyone is saying though the real mark of improvement will be getting outside and riding the bike and see how I do.

Week 1 avg pwr 246 max pwr 314
Week 11 avg pwr 280, max pwr 366
Week 16 avg pwr 298, max pwr 382
