Well in my down time, I've decided to do some work on my MTB.  While I really wanted to buy a new carbon hardtail for racing, my budget just couldn't justify it.  So, I decided to invest a little cash to modify my trail bike into a more optimal racing machine.

Currently, I'm riding a 5" trail bike.  For efficiencys sake, I've decided to change the bike over to 4 inches, which will steepen both the seat and head tube angles.  First round of change includes a new fork (Fox F32 100 RLC Terralogic), new bearing kit for the frame, and new cable and brake housing.  Next round, SRAM XX gearing.  I think I'm finally going to make the leap to a 20 gear system.  After examing the gear inches, it looks like I will go with a 39/26 chain rings and a 11-36 cassette.

My bike currently weighs 24.5 pounds.  I think with the proposed changes the bike will come in under 23 pounds!

I should have it down in the next couple weeks!  I'm excited to be racing on a virtually new bike before my next race!

That set up rocks!

Anytime you can get a full suspension mtb to weigh in under 24 lbs is incredible. Especially without a cf frame!

Nice Tim!!

speaking of being out west on an MTB. I did not find a place to rent bikes and go trail riding for my Vegas trip. But I did find an ATV excursion that I think I'm going to do. Now, I gotta keep working on my wife to stay somewhere with a lap pool!

The frame has carbon seat stays and rocker arm, but the remainder is aluminum.  But I have a lot of carbon and titanium in other places on the bike Smile

I am worried about changing the driveline though.  I think I'm going to wait to after the seasons over before I change to a 2 x 10 system.  On the low end of the new system, I will basicallly lose my granny gear.  With the new system, the lowest gear combination is equivalent to one up from granny on my existing system.  While it doesn't sound like a lot, I find it reasurring to have "granny" available for those nasty climbs.

... the weather here has been just miserable. 105-107 with heat indexes in the 110's.Kiss

Crap!  Looks like you got all of our heat.  It has been crazy here in California.  The weather has been unseasonably cool.  I think we've only had one weekend of temperatures over 100 and we were out of town!Sealed

Hang in there!  Have fun on your trip to Canada.  We are going to BC at the end of Spetember.

No, unfortunately it looks like the closest thing will be live chat online, some forum usage and a video critique of my stroke in a few months.  There are monthly 'modules' w/ videos and drills, etc that you follow in a self-paced/self-taught methodology.  Seems similar to the TI stuff I have been doing.  I was hesitant to sign up because I'm not crazy about the price for it, but I have 60 days to cancel for a full refund so I will see where it takes me for the next 8 weeks then decide if it's worth paying the rest of the purchase price.

Tim - sounds like you're enjoying tinkering with the bike! I'm glad the injury is on the mend, hopefully you can get back into running soon.

Trina - nice of you to stop by, I hope your heat wave has passed.

I got a great run in yesterday. 13.8 miles in under 2 hours. My half marathon split was 1:50 on the nose, which is the pace group time I'm aiming for with the Morgan Hill Half Mary. I really need to stay on top of my mid week runs too, which should give me some more strength and endurance for the long ones.

Hey all, I'm back in town.  It is HOT and HUMID back east.  Me no like!

I have not even begun catching up on this thread yet, but will soon I hope.  Trying to get back into the swing here, not much training the last 2 weeks, but LOTs of walking around Ney York and DC.  Good times, but it's nice to get home from vacation so I can rest a bit. Laughing

Things are looking good right now. I took my kids in a 5 mile hike yesterday and woke up without soreness or pain this morning. I'm still planning on not running this week, see how I feel, then attempt a couple small runs the week before my race..Today, I played with some gearing on my bike to get a feel for what the new system would feel like. While I cleared all the climbs, I noticed a little slower cadence, but my speed was slightly greater. It seems very doable, just need some time to strengthen and acclimate to the different gear ratios.

I'm a retard.  I just realized interbike is a trade show.  I can't get in.  So much for gear queer heaven before the las vegas tri .  We did find a sweet resort on Lake Las Vegas to stay at though.  I dunno what I'm gonna do now before the race besides sit poolside and get massages :D

Just caught up on the thread.  lots going on around here!!

Jay, Curt and Brian, nice races!!  I haven't read each race report yet but it sounds like you all did great.  Very nice.

Tim - what a bummer about the injury.  Good thing it's a TRIathlon, and you can still keep on swimming and biking. Laughing  The bike sounds nice, 23 pounds would be sweet.  and it will give you something to obsess over while healing...

Dave, congrats on the engagement!  When we got married (13 years ago!?!) we drove to Reno for a weekend with friends.  Total wedding was under $1k...  Of course both of our families wanted big receptions, so we did those too, but that was on their dime, and a few months later.

Actually the rehab is going well.  The injury obviously wasn't as bad as I originally thought.  Bizarre though, considering how I could barely walk when I first got injured.  Probably not the best idea, but played some whiffle ball with my kids last night in the street.  To my surprise, no pain again this morning.

When are we going to ride?

I'm racing this weekend. I don't know what or where though. LOL I'm either doing a 90 mile Team TT in Wisconsin, or the Palos Meltdown MTB race local. I'm leaning toward the meltdown since it seems like the rest of my team for the TT is only going out there to "ride", and not really race this. I'm a bit competitive by nature, and I don't want to travel 4-5 hours away pay for hotel food and a race and then just "ride" it to be somewhere different.

The Palos Meltdown looked pretty cool.  Course looked fast, flat, and non-technical.  Don't you guys have any hills back there? Laughing

Would you race Cat 2 - Comp (24 miles) or Cat 2 - Sport (16miles)?  I think that is how they worded the cats on their website.  Might as well get your money's worth and go for the 24 miles!

Going to start tearing my bike down today.  Fork arrives tomorrow, but I'll be at work the next couple of days.  Should have the first phase together by Monday and ready for my race the following weekend.

Since I haven't been on the mtb in prolly 2 months!!! I was thinking CAT2 sport. But I'll think about that more. No hills around here. I need to travel to Wisconsin for that. It's a flat course but very technical. When I MTB this is where I go. It's all we have local worth doing. It's probably 20 minutes from home.

Hey Tim,

I need some new MTB shoes. I'm thinking I may plan 3-4 xterra's next season besides my usually 3-4 MTB races and regular MTB riding. I was wondering what you thought of the Sidi Terra shoes? Without a ratchet, are these things still pretty solid MTB shoes? Or are they just conveinient for xterra's? I'm sure they will be better than what I have, but am I going to want another set of shoes with a ratchet mechanism?

I wear Specialized shoes and have no experience with Sidi, so I really can't comment on the specific shoe.  However, I do have the ratchet strap and it is a pain in the butt for transitions.  The ratcher is great your normal riding, but you are going to want an all velcro system for the XTERRAs.  I've been wanting to buy another pair of shoes, but just haven't pulled the trigger.

Oh, by the way, not so sure about the white though
