Day 652, 8.2 miles.

I started off my 51st year with an 8.2 miles run. I hope 51 will be even more active than 50 was. From the day I turned 50 until yesterday I ran a total of 3823.52 miles, 5 marathons, 3 ultra marathons, 50k, 50 miles and 100 miles, won my first race and that distance was 22.7 miles, ran several half marathons and shorter races. I hope to run a new PR or two for a marathon at age 51.

Happy Birthday! That was a great year!

I was going to save my 50 miler for when I turn 50, but since I am doing it this year I will have to think of something else. I turn 48 on Sunday so I have a couple years to think of something more crazy than 50 miles.

Happy birthday, Ron! Great year for you!!!

Got my 3.1 miles in tonight...in my race. 3rd place in my AG, but had an awful run. And now my feet are killing me, to the point I just don't even want to get up. Ugh...hope the morning is better.

Congrats on the AG place, that is awesome. I would've thought your run would have gone good, hopefully the feet will not keep you from running.

Thanks everyone. I also thought my run would be better than it was, as I had been doing pretty well lately...except that the PF has been dogging me more in the morning this past week. It wasn't actually the PF that dragged me down in the run. I just didn't feel good out of the gate, and you go up a hill in the first 1/4 mile. It just punched me. And then I got a side cramp for the first time in ages near the end of the race. That's what I get for being forgetful and having Coke for lunch with my Subway on race day!

I am walking much better today. I need to sneak in a few miles before I head up to Michigan State to meet up with some buddies for the evening!

And Switch, I am thinking about signing up for an Xterra off road triathlon in just about a month. Also giving some consideration to a HM in late October if I can get my feet under control.

Totally unsolicited adivce here, but FWIW I got these gel heel inserts for like $12 that really help my heel pain.  Running everyday has been the main help, but those have done something too.  Might be worth a shot...

An Exterra huh? Those sound pretty cool, though I  haven't been on a mountain bike in over ten years. Maybe trail running for a while would be good for those feet?

  • Wanted to get that extra mile..... I look back and can't fathom how I did 26.2. My words of sage/wisdom.... if you get to the point of doing that distance, don't let up, keep at it (unless it's something serious like cancer or broken bones). Once you have that stamina from multiple marathons or ironman training
keep at it....with minimal off days. I'm running with neurapathy in my feet (feels like frostbite-numbness).

18 x 100 is interesting to do after a static run for time and distance. Try to break up the monotony, use different muscle groups and just keep moving... it was only a 33 minute workout....and again......how did I ever do this for 5 hours? Interesting thoughts.

Just a quick refresh on me. I did a double marathon in December of 2009. Death Valley on Saturday and LV Rock and Roll on Sunday. Took a month off afterwards, than ran into a bunch of little injuries and setbacks, had a cancer event with surgery and chemotherapthy and now working to get back on the pony.

So now that I have found out about the http://www.runeveryday.com/ It's a motivator...

Glad to hear you have overcome some issues and beat cancer. Running everyday has changed my life for the better. I am getting close to the two year mark. Good luck on the running streak. I see you are a Maniac also from the early days. I am # 6244.

    #313- 2 miles (recovery day)

Streak is still going strong, training plan, not so much. I backed down to the 55/70 Pfitz plan. I didn't have the time to put in the miles while traveling, and don't feel prepared for 80 mile weeks. The first week I got about 40 miles in, last week closer to 60.

The first week it was very hot and humid, and I had a rough time adjusting to the 12 hour time difference, so my runs were sub-par. Then I traveled out in the country. Between early bus rides, and late arrivals to our hotels, it was tough finding time to get any quality training in. I couldn't really run before dawn or after dark due to no lights, poor road quality, and uncertainty of general safety in some areas.

I did spend a significant amount of time in Shanghai at a private residence in a nice gated community. The only problem there was the dogs. Many people in the development used very large and scary dogs for security, many Rotweilers, German Shepards, Dobermans, and so on. And occasionally these dogs got loose. I had two encounters where I had to stop running and back away slowly for fear of being attacked. It did turn out that dog bites there were not uncommon and usually if someone got bit, they would just get paid off. Some people walked carrying large sticks which I presumed was for personal safety from the dogs, and there was also a "sword lady." By the end, I had one two mile loop that was relatively safe, but much of the time I pretty much ran around a single block (about 1/4 mile).

It was interesting trying to figure out how to "officially" keep the streak going. First I wanted to keep with my local home time, which meant that I treated noon as midnight. However, That meant that I could run one afternoon, miss the next day, and run the following morning, and still be ok with the streak with my home time, so in order to not feel like I missed a day I sometimes ran twice so I wouldn't wake up and go to bed without running. So I kept the streak alive with my home time, and with the local time.
