Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Race report from Hyannis marathon/half marathon/10K......... It was AWESOME!!!!!!! Race Report: Woke up this morning with hives (just afew) have been started on medication for my thyroid and perhaps this was a reaction. Took a little Benadryl to ward off further hives and swelling. I seemed fine and didnt feel bad. Ate a rice cake with peanut butter and had a banana. Washed it down with a cup of coffee. My son picked me up at 7:00 am and we drove to Hyannis, about 1 1/2hours. Drank a little gatarode on the way down. It was cold!!!!9 degrees farenheit. Sun was up and it warmed as we got closer to Hyannis. I was completely filled with adreneline. Made a pit stop before reaching the race site. (I hate port-a-pots). Had to park about 1/2 mile from the site. This years race was about 3800 runners. It is sponsored by the Boston Athletic Assn and is one of the final qualifiers for the Boston Marathon. The place was really buzzing. The Hoyts were there for a book signing and I quickly stopped by that booth . They are such an inspiration. I did some running and walking prior to the start of the race. It felt great but still remained very cold. About 30 with a 10 mph wind. I put on an extra layer and brought my disposable gloves. I hate to have my hands too hot so I buy cheap gloves and discard them along the route when they get too hot. (At the end volunteers pick up the "discarded" clothing and donate it to charity.) The start was great. It amazes me that so many people can run all at one time. I initally lined up at the 9-10 mile mark but got pushed toward the back of the pack which is tough to get through in that first mile. I kept a very steady pace the entire race and it felt great.I did not wear a watch or monitor, I just ran with how I was feeling. The route is very scenic along the ocean passing the Kennedy coumpond. There were a few little hills but nothing daunting. I got some stomach cramps at about mile 4, but slowed my pace and this subsided. I was able to really sprint the last 200 meters and I knew I did well when I crossed the finish line. My time was 1:01:27. My time last year was 1:05:26. 4 MINUTE IMPROVEMENT FROM LAST YEAR!!!!! Although official times aren' t posted yet I believe overall I placed 268/500. In the Masters/athenas division I placed fifth, last year I was second, there were alot of fast women this year!!!!I didn't do it in under an hour which was my lofty goal...but I was close.Definately next year! It is such a great feeling to be able to run and be part of such a fantastic sport! The people were so supportive and kind. There weren't too many spectators...perhaps the cold had something to do with this...but those along the route were wonderful. After the race my son and I went out for lunch. Ate a huge plate of Nachos, followed by fish and chips, water and coffee. I haven't had that much fat in a meal since this race last year when I ate a huge plate of fried clams!!!!! I will still be running as an athena next year if I eat like this!!! I thought of you ALL before the race, during the race and at the finish line. Its so great to belong to this group. I felt your support along the route epecially at mile 4 when I heard Bryan saying "slow and steady!!!I am sorry I dont have any pics. My husband has the camera in China/Thialand. When the professional pics from the photographer on the route are done I'll see what I can do. THANK YOU ALL Flipper/guru of technology... I am going to try and post some bike pics. I might be able to run but I really fail at the whole computer thing!!!! YYYYEEEAAAHHH Pete!!!!!!!! I LOVED YOUR RACE. You are incredible. I so admire you. The pics are fabulous. I have never heard of an indoor tri, but looks like a BLAST. Glad you are hooked...its a great feeling. Your swimming is fantastic, you have really made progress. Happy Birthday Leston!!!!!! Finally to you Bryan... Thanks so much for your wisdom and encouragement!! Now that both "the kids" are done with the races you can rest easy.By the way... I can't wait to do another race. I'm not certain about a 1/2 in March, perhaps April. I am meeting with a trainer to set up a good plan for the OLY in Aug. He will also watch me swim, run and bike and look at my form. I am sure I will be fast on my black and silver bike. I am looking to improve my running. I'm excited to begin this plan Thanks again to all my fellow sTRIvers!!!! Marianne |

I'll trade what I know about computer programs for your ability to run! First, I simply CAN NOT imagine running when it is THAT COLD! How do you even get your muscles to warm up before the race? UNREAL. And then to run that thing in an hour?! Ok, yeah, there were a lot of "fast women" there and you were one of them! Woohooo! WTG! I'm so proud of you! Proud and inspired... thank you for that! |

I have been waiting up to read your race report before I head off to bed. My wife and kids tease the life out of me about how early I "hit the sack". Normal night is 9:30 - 10:00 but Sunday is often by 8:30. You ran a GREAT race. That time is awesome for a 10k. Like you, I absolutely LOVE the feeling that you get from being in a race. The volunteers, the spectators, the feeling of satisfaction from achieving a goal, etc. You mentioned you might push back your half to April or so. Why not think about the National Capital Half Marathon in Ottawa at the end of May. It's not all that far to drive from MA and it is an awesome event. My wife and I are planning to do the Half there as well as my brother and his wife. You are officially the Race Queen For The Day |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bryan (et al.) - just back from the pool where I did 50's (not sure how many) with rest between each effort. The first 25 feels so comfortable - my strokes feel long and strong, I feel like I am floating closer to the surface along the full length of my body and my breathing motion (I am only able to breathe to the left) is efficient. No sooner do I make the turn for the second 25 and I start to feel like my lower body bouyancy diminishes, my stroke loses power and I struggle to make the smooth head turn required to breathe easily. The best way I can describe it is the first 25 is like gliding and the second 25 is like plowing. And it seems the same for the second half of the first 50 as it does for the second half of the last 50 - aarrrrgggghhhhh !! |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! FBP, I don't know if it's any consolation, but I have the same problem :-P. In my case, I believe that its related to holding my breath too long on the turn. Need to get up to the air faster and keep my breathing more rhythmic. But Bryan, I'm all ears on this one also. BTW, do you guys recommend open turns or flip turns? I haven't tried flips, but I would like to learn how to do it. Slow and steady, Leston |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hi All, Leston IMO I am not big on the flip turn. Most of the tris are open water and you dont turn. There are alot of opinions about this because if you turn at the wall you get a good gasp of air that you wouldn't naturally get. If you flip, you breathe as if you are swimming. Also with flips, your times will be closer to what you will do in the open water. I just think they are alot of work to learn. I would concentrate on alternate breathing before flip turns because the bouys you will have to swim around can be to your right or left and you can sight them while you breathe. Juanita and Bryan may give you some other insights. Maybe I feel this way because I am not a good flip turner! Speaking of Juanita... Where have you been?... I bet your riding "Cool". How has it been ? Do you like it? Let us know. Pete, I know that you are an experienced runner. Try and remember what is what like when you first started running and it was hard to run one mile. Same with swimming. That first 25 feels easy now pretty soon 150 will feel easy. Before you know it 800 will feel easy! There are some great drills on this site. They will improve your form and your muscles. I am tired today.. the old hamstrings feel very tired. Maybe an unscheduled day off tommorow. Who knows maybe i'll even figure out how to get some pics up here!! sTRIve On Marianne |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I am so amazed at each of you....that's two more finish lines for sTRIve....yippee. My count is that is 6 for the team. Who's next? Mav and FBP...congrats...you both rock...and we will make you the sTRIve official record holders for indoor tri held in Feb 2008 and 10Ks run on the weekend of 2/23-24/08. Swimming...the second twenty five is always harder than the first. The third easier than the fourth, the fifth easier than the sixth, etc. The first thing to notice is how fast you recover so the 1st, 3rd and fifth is easier, the second lengths have you a little gassed. I am thinking some is a perceived lack of air which subconsciously makes you carry your head a little higher. I am going to suggest you do open turns to get a little more air and maybe hold that form longer. I swim some with flip turns but as Flipper was told earlier, you don't flip turn in open water so it is not critical. Also, here is the focus for the second length of each of your 50s (that's the coming home leg of the lap) - on the first 50 think of lengthening your vessel, becoming more torpedo like, swim through the smallest tube in the water - really reach with that catch hand - get it out there and it enhances your body roll. Then on the next 50 - focus on pointing your nose at the bottom of the pool, look straight down, point the top of your head at the wall you are swimming toward. This will help on the streamlining. Then on the third 50 focus on pressing your weight into your lead armpit, think of weighting your chest, some people call it swimming downhill, but the more you balance your body, the easier it is to swim. Then repeat these three focuses for as many 50s as you swim.

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Here is a fun workout for the week. On one of your workout days do a 20-30 minute bike ride with a 10-12 minute run off the bike. We want to start the legs understanding what you are going to ask them to do. You can also do the run after spin class for those of you up north but I would suggest doing it after an endurance class rather than hills or speedplay. If you choose to try this, spin in a light gear for the last couple of minutes on the bike, this gets your blood flowing through your legs - then as soon as you get off the bike, change shoes and get to running...no dawdling here...we want this to feel like you are moving into the run off transition. By the way, if I haven't said it I am proud of each of you and I am honored to be here with you. sTRIve B |

Hey sTRIve, it took me a while to get caught-up on the posts since last week and I certainly have missed a lot! You guys truly ROCK. I have learned so very, very much just reading and following everyone. Thank you for being here. Pete: Love the pics of the indoor tri. Sounds like you did GREAT. I will be doing my indoor tri on April 6th. I think it was the same time: 10 minute swim; 30 min bike and then 20 min run. I was using 14 laps as my goal in the pool as well. You doing 16 was great. Nice work! This will be my first time putting all three disciplines together. Marianne: You are a true inspiration. I can't express to you enough how much I enjoy reading your descriptions. Your memory and writing skills are outstanding - it makes me feel like I am in the race with you. And then your results are amazing. Keep up the work and keep posting. Here is what I have been up to: Had a terrible head cold over the weekend plus my daughter (Samantha) had her final basketball games so I didn't work out either day, but was able to resume on Monday. I found a guy at my gym that is an excellent swimmer (swims 2 miles a day 3 days a week and 5 miles non-stop every year on his birthday!). He agreed to work with me for a while on my swim. With his pushing, I ended up swimming 30 lengths (with many stops of course!). Here was his assessment of my stroke: -Head and shoulders were suprisingly good (he expected it to not be very good based on my description to him). -My kick is terrible! He says I kick way too much and that is likely one of the things that is tiring me out too quickly. I am also kicking from my knees down instead of from my hip. I know what his is talking about, but am having a hard time stopping it! -When I start getting tired, my head comes out of the water too much. It is good when I start, but lose the form as I tire. I was able to swim 150m break; 100m break; 4 - 75m break; 100m to finish. This is double what I have swam so far. I am working with him tomorrow as well and plan on swimming 30 lengths. Bryan, I have done several of the bike/run bricks and find them very, very helpful. The first time I did it, my legs were like mush. I can now transition fairly easily from the bike to run. Many people told me this can be a difficult transition, so I wanted to get my body use to it early in my training. I also found a core workout in last month's Men's Fitness Magazine (one of my favorite magazines). I will try to copy it and post it - but I certainly don't have Juanita's league when it comes to computer stuff! I will let you know how my swim goes tomorrow. Dan ps Bryan, did you get my MAP test that I emailed to you last week? |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Dan - sounds like a great swim workout ! Juanita - great to hear you are back into the groove ! Last night was my weekly swim class. We started with 200m warmup then we were divided into groups to swim 800m. We could choose to do 1x800 or 2x400 or 4x200 or 8x100. I chose that last option. Took a 15-20 second break in between 100's. Man, 800m is a LONG way !!! I got it done though alternating crawl and breast stroke every 100m. Next we did 1x100 kick only. Then we were divided into teams of 4 and did a 4x50m relay race. My team won after I opened up a MONSTER lead for us on leg 3 . We finished off the session with an easy 1x100 arms only.

Bryan, Did the brick yesterday(my legs felt fine) 1 hour on my bike trainer, then I quickly changed(had to get out of wet clothes before going outside) and ran 5K in 34 min. I walked 1 mile as a cooldown. It felt great. I registered for 2 triathlons today. Danskin sprint July 27-28. Then I registered for the Mooseman international in NH June 8. This one is 1.5 K swim 44K bike 10K run. This is my goal...have to admit it is a little intimadating. Actually I am very nervous... hope I can do it! I plan on doing a sprint on May11, June 15, womens sprint on sept7 and possibly another OLY on Aug 31. LOFTY RACE SCHEDULE!!!!! I am running in a 5 K race for ALS this weekend. I ran it last year, it was my last race before I stress fractured my leg so I am excited to see how I do this year. Lofty goal is to come in under 30 minutes. Thanks for the push, I needed to commit to racing! Hey Dan, good to hear from you Let you all know how the race goes. I work 3-11 pm so its going to be tough to race early on sat but the temps are supposed to be a balmy 40 degrees! I'LL BE THINKING OF YOU ALL AT THE FINISH LINE Marianne |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! You guys are AWESOME!!!! I can't get over where you are today vs where you were when we first started this wacky group just over a month and a half ago. Go back and read some of those posts on page 1. You are all pros now. Keep sTRIving. Swimmers - you are all doing very very well. Keep up the work - you are all going to be fine. It is amazing to me that several of you are swimming 100s and 150s already at this stage of the year. Keep up the great work. As far as the kick goes, we kick to rotate our body and that's about it....save the legs for the bike and run. Runners - I want you all to keep your focus on not over-doing it. Extend by 10% a week in duration and intensity and NO MORE. I don't want any stress fractures or other overuse injuries keeping any of you from your goals. Recovery - remember your muscles repair themselves during recovery. You MUST take at least one day off a week. If you are racing, take 2 days. Be rested on race day. No exercise the day before a race. Only a brief warmup - either a 15 min spin, a 5 min run or a few laps at the pool - like 5-7 that's all. And then stretch. That is IT! You cannot train or improve your time the day before the race - you can only make yourself slower. Bricks - As you say Dan, the legs sometimes feel like mush. It typically is most mushy when you have pushed hard on the bike. At this time of the year all the distances should be LSD (long slow distance). Injuries - from my research, we typically get hurt when we are pushing - either speed or distance. Be careful, build gradually and sTRIve like a turtle. The journey begins with one swim stroke, one pedal stroke or one stride. Great job, B |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey sTRIvers, speaking of kicking... In my swim lesson on Thursday my coach had me work on my kick. He had me start by using a kickboard just to see how bad it was . Well, it was tough. He told me to (1) kick from the hip not the knee, keeping the ankle loose, and (2) keep the kicks short, compact. Then I did another 25 with the kickboard, focused on those two things, and it was a lot better. Finished with a 200 on the kickboard. The kickboard is hard because it is challenging to stay horizontal and balanced, but it does help you to focus on the kick. I think it will help me to isolate it because I can't think about 2 or 3 or 5 different things while I'm trying to swim. I've tried it, it doesn't work :-P. I'm trying to take Bryan's suggestion and think of something else while I'm swimming, but I'm still very uncomfortable in the water. Sigh. Keep up the good work everyone, and stay healthy! FBP...I see a shiny...fast...black and silver road bike in your future...Wheeeeee! Slow and steady, Leston |

I'm with Leston... black and silver=fast, fast, fast. Bike shopping is so much fun. Enjoy. Bryan, i'll try another brick today, in the gym. Leston, just an idea...when I use the kickboard I keep my head in the water, tucked a little, and my arms long and extended. This simulates the position of free style without the arm movements. I concentrate on kicking. I only lift my head for a breath when I need it. sTRIve Marianne |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Ok Bryan, you wanted a report on the brick. I went to the gym this morning and started off with some swimming. I'm trying to get to the pool 3 times/week if even for 20 or 30 minutes. Anyway, the swim was uneventful. I still can't seem to do more than 50 at a time. But I'll keep at it. Then I rode the stationary bike for 48 minutes, about 17 miles according to the machine. Sat is my long ride for the week. Rode pretty hard, but at my target HR. Man, I sweat like a big dog on that thing. Could use a nice big fan blowing in my face! Right after that I hopped on the treadmill at my regular training pace, which is determined by my target HR (about 140). I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too bad. Didn't experience mushy legs, but it was definitely different and took a while to feel normal. After about 8 minutes I felt like I was in the "running zone" as normal, although I had to slow my pace a bit to keep my HR down. So I stayed on the treadmill for 15 minutes, including my cool down. Anyway, that's the scoop on the brick. What's up with the term "brick" anyway? Is it because that's how your legs feel? Haha. Slow and steady, Leston sTRIve on! |
