I haven't had any race nightmares yet - which is odd.  They usually start about a month before.  Mine always have me showing up late or unprepared - forgotten shoes, wrong shoes, a breakfast date made me late.   Here's hoping for good sleep this week!

Looks like wave #11 is the place to be.  I am in #11 with bib #1243.

I hope the wave starts are not a full 5-7 minutes apart.  I would rather get started early instead of waiting around.  The earlier the start means less time out in the heat during the bike/run.  I would like to take advantage of as much of the cooler morning time as possible.

When I asked the RD on ST about waves he said: We are going with 6 min. between waves and might look at 7-8 min.

My biggest concern is nutrition. If you eat breakfast at 3:00 in your room and don't start your wave until after 9:00 you are obviously going to have to be eating along the way. I usually nibble on a PowerBar in transition and sip on dilute GEF on the walk to the swim start, but this may not be enough with such a long wait.

how does that effect the cutoff time?  I'm guessing the times they have posted on the website will change no matter what depending on when the last swim wave goes out?

The guide says that the swim cut-off time is 1 hour and 10 minutes after the last wave starts.  To mean this indicates that the last wave is held to 1 hour and 10 minutes cut-off, everyone prior will have additional time depending on when their wave leaves prior to the last one.  The posted times will change according to when the last wave starts, they have to account for delays etc. and can't have set time with no flexibility, at least this is how I read it.

Ya, you're right about that - my wave (11) probably won't get off till around 8:20 - that a long time to sit around wainting.  But from what I read, we're able to have a swim bag with us that they'll take back to the finish line, so I'll throw a bottle of water in there along with some GU - I usually like to take one about 15 minutes before I start.

just a reminder that i'm going to be out there this weekend to swim and bike the course.  Low intensity on the bike as i'm getting in to my taper.

If anyone else is planning on being out there send me a PM and we can try to hook up and ride as a group or something.

For those who have done Steelhead before, what do the family/friends do for the day? It looks to me theyre stuck at the beach for the day, right? Are there any other activities going on, in or around the HIM? I'm guessing there is no athlete tracking like at Ironmans, so the only way for family/friends to know when I might arrive is by my bike/run estimates, correct? I'd thought about texting my position periodically until I read the athlete guidebook, and it mentioned no cell phones.

Hows everyone else handling family/friends? Is it best for them to bring beverages/food for the day or are there quite a few locations to eat at the park? When I volunteered in 2007, I didnt see much in the way of food for family.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Facilities around the transition area are pretty sparse. There is one snack concession, but I'm not sure what time it opens. There is not a lot of shade, and it's pretty sandy, so it can be hot. The beach is nice and there is a small play area for young children. That is about it. I don't know of any athlete tracking. There is a nice area just into Benton Harbor, so maybe 2 miles away, with some nice restaurants and shops. There is a very nice toy store there for kids and a couple of ice cream and chocolate shops.

What day is most everyone planning on showing up?  I'll be there on Thursday afternoon and would like to get together with anyone else who is showing up early.

I'll be in fairly early on Thursday.  I'll have my cell and can text in the US. (No calling ... roaming is ridiculous.)  I'm planning on hitting the expo early and racking my bike late on Friday.

I wouldnt mind getting to Benton Harbor early in the day on Friday if others will be around to socialize with. I wouldnt mind getting in a short swim sometime Friday to experience swimming once again the waters of Lake Michigan. Also would like to drive the bike and run course, maybe even bike the run course.

I want to take in the entire experience of my first HIM.

Let me know what others are doing, and I'd love to join in.

We'll be checking into the hotel late on Thursday.  My wife and 3 girls are coming along (7, 15, 16) so if anyone else has any kids coming along maybe we could meet up on Friday - I know a few others have been asking about activities - my wife was asking me today - not sure what there will be for them to do there but it might be nice if there are other family members for them to be able to at least hang together.

Not sure which of the meetings I'll hit, but I'll probably rack my bike as soon as they open up at 5pm.

My kids, daughter 12 and son 7, will be at the race. I'm not sure what we will be doing on Friday as we may not get there very early. It can be a long day for the kids on Saturday so it would be nice if there were other kids to meet up with.

My wife, 3 year old daughter will be coming in Friday morning. I'm up for meeting up and hitting the expo together. Maybe a bite to eat after. Open water swim sounds good too. So how are we going to organize this? Let's get a role call of who will be there on Friday for the expo or dinner. We can then PM cell numbers for texting. you can PM your cell to me, then I'll PM them to everyone on our role call if you like. Let me know.
