Patarero - 2009-01-16 12:03 PM

My current ride is a KHS Flite 750 (http://www.khsbicycles.com/07_flite_750_06.htm).  I don't foresee a tri or time trial bike in the near future.  So looking at equipping it to gain some tech-speed. I borrowed some AL oval aerobars for a few weeks prior to  the sprint race I did.  Getting some of my own here shortly.  So please fill in the blanks:

1. Carbon aero bars

2. Tires?  Right now have Kenda Kaliente 700x23c.  Should I go to a smaller size or 23 tires with less rolling resistance?

3. ?

4. ?

and so on and so forth

thanks j

Have you been following our discussions?  We kinda already covered this.  Read back on pages 3, 4, and 5.    Bottom line (and Aaron correct me if I'm wrong) is that Aaron thinks that Aerobars are not the best investment unless you have your seat post changed (otherwise you will have to reach too far) and a professional fit done.

Thanks JF-Aaron!  Appreciate it.  I got the bike fit a while back.  Made a big difference. Working on T.I.T.S., have the clipless.  Tri bike might be a while.  -j

Austin,
Subject: Daddy got a new pair of shoes!
Actually 2 pair, kind of on accident.

I ordered a new pair of Beasts from Kelly's Monday but the website blew up on me right at the end and I couldn't tell if the order went through. I sent them an email but didn't get a response. So then I found this email coupon from Kelly's and placed another order on Tuesday. Wed I get an email from Kelly's telling me the 1st order went through.

So now I get to try out a new shoe cycle with 2 new pairs of shoes. I've read that alternating actually increases the life of each pair because it gives them more time to 'rest' in between runs. That may only be true if you're running 5 days/week.

skywashed, you might try rolling just beneath and behind your knee as well. I think it's about as painful as a tight IT; something about hitting those insertion points. The other tortuous tool is a lacrosse ball which is about as hard as a baseball without the seams. It's easier to dig into small areas. I used one on my periformis (which is a difficult muscle to reach) last year and it helped.

Brickey - 2009-01-15 8:10 PM I just ran in -10 wind chill and it felt awesome.  Anyone else running in this arctic freeze?

I do, every morning, today it was -35F with the windchill. I must say it was probably my coldest run this winter.

If I had to make a list based on performance:

1. bike fit
2. T.I.T.S. (time in the saddle)
3. clipless pedals
4. tri bike (w/ proper bike fit)
5. HRM/power meter (w/ the knowledge on how to use them)
6. aero wheels
7. race tires/tubes
8. high quality/light weight components
9. aero helmet

Aero wheel before aero helmet?

I am going to be using a heart rate monitor for the first time this year.  I am clueless on how to utilize this information and how to set my target zones up.  Should I be getting a blood lactic test to find my zones?

I ordered a new pair of Beasts from Kelly's Monday ....

So, I got pair 1 of the shoes...

There's a note in the box saying Kelly's is offering a secret discount. Type in SECRET in the redeem promo code box at checkout.

Kelly's Running Warehouse

They have great prices, but very limited customer service and return policies. A good place if you know the exact shoe you want, not so good if you are trying out a new brand/model.

Derek.....You're going to love your HRM once you get a feel for it.  It was the key to my newfound enjoyment of running.  That and my Asics...I never realized what "comfortable" meant until I got those shoes!

Totally agree with this. I'm on my second HRM. I never really got into it the first time, and now that I've made a serious effort to track and log the numbers, I love running with a HRM.

Asics Nimbus-- great shoes. I had been wearing the  21-- series for years, and tried out this model a year ago. Definitely worth the money for the cushioning.

Now I have 2 questions:

  1. Power meters. Who has one, what do you think of it, and is it worth the $$ investment?; and
  2. Blood lactate testing. How/where do you get this done? I'm guessing I need a doctor's slip to get it, right?

To go with that what is the cheapest way to monitor power?

1. I've got a PowerTap on my road bike, had an Ergomo on my tri bike and currently have a Quarq.  I don't like the PT's computer but the Quarq is compatible with the Garmin 705 so you can program the display.

Worth?  Only if you're willing to read up and learn how to use it, or pay a coach to do it for you.  Otherwise is just a really expensive bike computer.

2.  Coaches, personal trainers, University kineseology departments; anyone who knows how can do it.  There's no doctors involved.  It just simple finger pricks to get the blood samples while you bike or run.

Any idea what the cheapest way to go, to just measure current output, and avg? Lap function would be nice.

Interesting point about working out in different shoes. I may give this a go!

And thanks for the info on the power meters. I've been contemplating the purchase for a while.

Everybody- How were the workouts this weekend? Who met a goal? Who met a setback? Who learned something new?

I've read that alternating actually increases the life of each pair because it gives them more time to 'rest' in between runs. That may only be true if you're running 5 days/week.

True, but I wouldn't recommend alternating between pairs of the exact same shoe.

Every shoe will have slightly different cushioning/structure/support/etc.  Alternating pairs will increase their lifetime, but you're still using the exact same muscles in your foot and ankle with each run.  If a shoe gives you structure then you're not using certain muscles to give you support and if you never work them you'll never be able to get rid of that support.

If you rotate a variety of shoes then they'll all last longer as well as working slightly different muscles each time you run.  I use a 4 shoe rotation between Asics Nimbus 11, Speedstar 3, Bandito and Pearl Izumi Streaks.  I've got chusioning, a light weight trainer, a racing flat, and structure.  Plus a pair of Nike Free's that I use when I do strength/balance training.

Variety makes you stronger.  I'll never go back to my Kayano's.

Good info.  I had never heard that before.  Should I have different brands, or is changing the shoe within the same brand ok?  Do you do equal training in your racing flat?

Hmm, I get the idea. I guess that has to be weighed against picking a shoe that causes/allows injury; and you're down $100 and a couple of weeks of training at least. The guidance I've read is once you find a shoe that works, stick with it. I've tried probably 6 brands/models in the past 5 years and the Beasts work best for me until about 400-500 miles. Had some serious ankle impingement issues to the point the doc wouldn't give me any more cortisone shots prior to the switch. Possibly shoes, possibly my running base, possibly form, possibly all these and more. Staying in the same shoe eliminates one variable. I had considered a different shoe this time simply to find an alternative. Maybe for the next round...

And then there's the fact that I'm pretty sure I won't get budget approval for a power meter (or tri bike) if I've got $400 worth of running shoes and some of them 'just don't work.'
